DudeYoureDuckd I’m in a similar situation!! I’m half Icelandic but born and raised in England, so I’ve found it really hard to continue to expand my Icelandic vocabulary when I’m constantly surrounded by English! But I have found some things that have really helped me: -Filling my social media feeds with Icelandic content. On instagram I follow @elinstefans who posts stories of her speaking in Icelandic pretty much every day, also @everywordinicelandic & @learnicelandicnow post about learning Icelandic, and @ljosmyndasafnislands & @islenskarlistakonur are Icelandic photography and art accounts which post Icelandic captions! I’m also in a Icelandic learning group on Facebook (it’s called Practice and Learn Icelandic, and it has LOTS of great learning resources listed!!) and I like Rúv and mbl.is on facebook so I’m reading more Icelandic in news articles. -Watching Icelandic TV & movies. Honestly watching kids stuff is really good and I’ve found loads of videos of Lati Bær / Lazy Town in Icelandic here on youtube!! But one of the best things is to watch Rúv online or on the app. Lots of programmes are available to watch outside of Iceland, and there’s so much content to choose from! I can’t recommend doing this enough!! Even just watching the news every day in Icelandic has made a huge difference for me and helped broaden my vocabulary. Also a brilliant Icelandic tv show is Ófærð/Trapped, and some movies I’ve enjoyed are Brúðguminn, Hrútar, Kona fer í stríð, Mamma Gógó, Nói albínói and Eldfjall. -Setting my phones preferred language to Icelandic. Not everything is available in Icelandic, but the day and date are shown in Icelandic, and youtube and google maps are automatically in Icelandic now for me. -and finally, Icelandic music!! I listen to a few artists who perform in Icelandic and its another great way to immerse yourself in the language. I really like GDRN and JóiPe x Króli ! I hope some of this helps!!!! I wish you the best of luck with continuing to better your Icelandic, I know it can be really tricky but don’t give up!! :~)
@radioactivel16094 жыл бұрын
U.B. Pearson thank you!! The only Icelandic movies/shows I can watch are the cd’s we have at home like Ladi bær, söngvaborg and Fíasól, which I don’t have so much interest in anymore but I sometimes watch it with my niece. I do listen to Icelandic music because of my parents, they often listen to bubbi and sometimes my dad explain what he is singing. I speak four languages daily, and it’s so hard to learn everything at once, but I NEED to get better at Icelandic since my whole family lives in Iceland. Plus Icelandic is a very beautiful language and very cool to know how to speak lol. It’s crazy how much better you get by listening to the language. When I visit my family in Iceland, I get so much better in just a week of being there. Also because I really try to speak Icelandic when I’m there. Here in Denmark I get kind of lazy and don’t try hard enough. I hope my English was understandable...
@u.b.pearson55814 жыл бұрын
DudeYoureDuckd you’re so welcome!! :~) yeah for a time I was also stuck with just watching old dvds but it’s surprising how much Icelandic content you can find online! definitely definitely utilise the Rúv app too to find new shows to watch!! & yess my mum also plays bubbi and mannakorn too and explains what I don’t understand! speaking four languages is AMAZING!!!! honestly props to you! language learning really is hard, especially when you have multiple languages to be able to mix things up with hahaha! but I’m exactly the same, I have a big family in Iceland and really feel the need to be able to speak Icelandic fluently, it’s my life’s dream lol. and ISNT IT!!! every time I go to visit I improve SO MUCH and in such a short space of time! when I was younger we went for 6 weeks one summer and by about week 3 I didn’t speak English at all to my mum, it was crazy! It is much harder to keep it up when you’re not there though, completely surrounded by Icelandic and really having to use it daily. But I’m sure we’ll both get there- I believe in us!!!! I’ve always said I want to move to Iceland for at least a few years, and I think that will be the best way to fully get to grips with the language! But until then, just surrounding myself with as much Icelandic as I can is what I can do! & I agree it is suuuuuuch a beautiful language, I love how soft it is and all of the unique sounds are so interesting!! also your English is great!

So fascinating to listen to you speaking Icelandic. I'm Norwegian and speak a dialect known as "Helgelandsmål". Since it is said to have kept a lot of the old Norse language intact, I went on Google translate to check for similarities with Icelandic. There are quite a lot of similarities. It sounds silly, but I get a little emotional listening to Icelandic people speak. The reason is that a lot of the Icelandic population are descended from Norwegians who emigrated a thousand years ago. We've been separated ever since, but to hear that our languages carries with them the connection of our people is special to me.

Heyyy for people who is asking about how it is to be a immigrant in Iceland I kinda can answer, I'm french I lived in Iceland I had the right to stay in Iceland as a student as it was for my studies it was pretty easy to do the papers and have a kennitala I was shocked how administration was easier then in France, but idk how it when for people who like somme of my friends moved in Iceland forever because the y married an Icelander or was part who the migrants iceland decided to welcome because they country was in a civil war. I think being an immigrant is in every country hard because it's hard the learn a new language and a new cultural and for years you won't be considered the same as others people because you don't speak like others people and native are tried of having to listen to someone struggling to speak however with me but it can depend on where you are from Icelander was sweat I was just surprised because people in France less shy and appear to show more a big personality but when you know Icelander they are really like every body in the world. The most shocking is the price of things in Iceland it's really really expensive and you will have a hard time to pay things particularly if you are a immigrant you will have to take a job is half easy blabla and I realise it's really too long to say anything and I'm now lazy so I will just say living in Iceland is peaceful and chill and beautiful but sometimes damn boring like really boring and expensive and being a immigrant is a beautiful experience if you choosed it but it's hard

Why would someone want to watch you speak Icelandic for 13 minutes, you ask? I can only speak for myself, but I love learning (about) different languages I don't speak (yet), and Icelandic really sounds... hm elvish? And I really like listening to you speaking Icelandic. Furthermore, as you kindly provided subtitles, I could learn a lot about you as a person, and I enjoyed that a lot. You seem like a very gentle, positive, likeable person. Please do more videos like this!

It's nice to finally know of someone who gets as annoyed at people not paying attention as I do lol. & you're spot on about the book thing, I can't always go do something fun or go see a beautiful place but I can I read about doing those things & it's like I'm there 💓

My hands are full with Swedish, but I love hearing Icelandic being spoken. I have an Icelandic flag in my collection. A year ago I made a video showing it.

I'm half Faroese half Spanish, my first language is Spanish and I also speak Faroese and English with my relatives whenever I'm in Faroe Islands. Hearing Icelandic is sound so similar to Faroese even if I don't use subtitles I still can understand it.

Islensku is beautiful, thanks for doing this! What is your perception of the situation of Islandic at the moment? I'm hearing that a lot of young people are using English much more now?

I love the Icelandic language (I am self-studying Icelandic at the moment) and really like it when you can make this kind of video in Icelandic only. I would greatly appreciate it if you can also make a subtitle in Icelandic so I can follow the words you are speaking. Thanks!

Wow very interesting, also, I remember that BBC has some "modern" representations of Canterbury tales, in case you are interested and maybe it could be of help to your thesis, I remember I added some weird youtube videos to mine haha. Thanks for the vids.

That was a very good. Glad I had subtitles. Is the language hard to learn? Was it easier for you to learn English as opposed to any other language you speak? You are a very intelligent and well-spoken young lady. Glad to have found you on KZbin.

I have to confess that I had to turn on the subtitles lol, and I hope this doesn't sound too weird but Icelandic sounds beautiful. One of my favourite things to do when I need to escape is reading a good book, you can read a book a hundred times and you'll always find something different that you didn't notice before.

When you speak Icelandic, I hear German, Spanish, Italian and Swedish. Maybe it is because of all the different countries that landed there to make their own original language!! 😀

As a norwegian that moved to brazil when I was 8 years old, Islandsk sounds like a a mix of norsk with danish. I can't even explain, but I can understand the context for some reason. About being a immigrant it's the same as in norway for the people who asked. No fluent native language and forget about any kind of jobs except restaurant jobs. All the nordics speak english but every workplace will prioritize who speaks the native language because all meetings will not be in english.

I have immigrated to Iceland since january, the hardest part was leaving my dog at home (he is my everything) but couldn’t let him stay in quarentine for a month so he is now with my parents. Once you are in iceland ask your colleagues to talk in icelandic and not in english except when you don’t understand. This will help you learn the language faster! For all the weather questions: always be prepared that’s my advice. It might look like it is ok now but in one hour the wearher can change drasticly. Food can be expensive if you want to eat like you would normally in your own country. Eat atlot of icelandic prodused food (mainly sheep and cow) and it will be a lot cheaper because iceland is expansive. If you want to know about the aurora borealis download the app called: My aurora forcast & alert. It will send notification if it is visable at your location and you can track whenever it will come, super handy app. And just enjoy thats my number 1 tip since it can be very hard. For me i moved to a farm so i cant really go anywhere nesrest town is like 30 min drive away but i don’t have a car here yet. Hou will get homesick but you have to get over it.

Because i am not gonna lie it is hard. I have cried many times because i don’t have any friends here and i don’t meet many people here since i am on a farm and sometimes i wish i was back home but i just need to remember why I came here in the first place
