I really appreciated how Jonathan mentioned how Anna's healthy body image/mental state has improved her reaction to the mundane, everyday things like him not taking the bins out when he says. It's important to remember that tackling the hard self-reflection rewards you in the little aspects of life.

Mad respect to Jonathan for being such a strong and constant support to Anna. (And obviously to Anna herself--you're such an inspiration girl) Its not easy being on either side when either you are struggling with something like this or your partner is. I have been on both sides personally and sometimes I think it's harder watching someone you love so much go through something so tough and having no idea how to 'fix' it. You have to learn there's no 'fix', just to be there for them which is really difficult 💕

It is such a relief to find a lighthearted video talking about issues like this. Everything has been so stigmatized and people shy away from talking about it and feel like crying every time because it’s so “heavy”. Honestly, it’s much better to remove the stigma and realize that having these issues is not the end of the world. Everyone feels so alone and everything feels so severe and awful at times. But people don’t realize that tons of others go through the same thing. Yes, it is awful and hard to go through something like this, but I feel like it makes it worse when people make it out to be like this horrendous experience that should traumatize you every minute of your life. And this goes for every issue like addiction, mental illness, etc. It’s an aspect of our life and we have to live with it, we know there’s something wrong and it really doesn’t help to avoid it like the plague or make it into such a severe topic. It just makes so much worse and makes you feel so ashamed and hopeless. The biggest help Jonathan did, I think, was be your support. He never shamed you and he didn’t act like it was the end of the world. He knew it was just something you had to deal with, an aspect of your life. You don’t need anyone pressuring you. You just needed someone to lean on and talk to and be there no matter what. We all need this energy in our lives honestly. Our issues don’t define us. We should be able to laugh about it, talk about it. I feel like that would help a lot more people recover rather than teaching them it’s such a severe thing.

I struggled really badly as a 15-18 year old teen (I still struggle but I’m more aware now as an adult) and when I started dating my current SO at 17 he knew nearly immediately about not only my ED but my self harm and depression/anxiety. He struggled with it at first, I mean he’s a fixer and he couldn’t just fix me. But over the first 2 years of our relationship I gained nearly 40lbs and while that set me back a lot it was also something to be proud of because he made me so happy, he made me comfortable and while that didn’t fix the problem it gave me a safe haven someone I wasn’t afraid to show the bad. Now we’ve been together 6 years and I’m trying to slowly lose weight healthily and he understands how hard of a process that is. I’m so glad you have Jonathan Anna because he seems to really get you and understands that it’s not something that one can just cure, EDs are life long and we will always have good and bad times. ❤️

Thank you immensly for this open and raw discussion. I know the podcast things is being done a lot at the moment but you 2 would be perfect for it. I admire you both so much, Jonathan’s approach is really the best approach I could ever wish for - letting the sufferer figure it out on their own but whilst remaining supportive, understanding that recovery needs to be their own decision and kinda let it run it’s course. I said this years ago and I say it again now ... I really hope I meet someone like either Jonathan or Anna for my partner. You’re both just such genuine, kind-hearted people 💕

Anna your parenting choices are very similar to mine. My children have always known that if they ask me a question I will give them a truthful and age appropriate answer. I have so many books, all at different age stages explaining sex, pregnancy, puberty, periods, relationships, sexuality, pornography (I have children’s books explaining the dangers of pornography) , contraception, alcohol, drugs and gender (and so many more topics) and my children even now at 10 and 13 always come to me before going to google/ asking friends etc. My 13 year old son recently thanked me for being open and honest, he says it shocks him that his friends parents have never talked about the things we have talked about since he was a toddler (bearing in mind that I never deliberately taught any of the above, I was just open, honest and truthfully prepared when they asked me the hard questions). Both of my children are nonchalant and have no embarrassment in asking the ‘embarrassing questions,’ I am really glad they feel able to ask me - the alternative was asking friends or searching online and finding material that is just not appropriate for children to be watching! Obviously I would rather my children stay innocent - and I have found that my children are actually more innocent than their peers - they are more innocent because they are having their curiosity met in a way that isn’t exposing them to images/ videos that they are not old enough to process! They know that I will never judge them and that there is nothing they could do that would stop me from loving them ! Both of my children know the actual meaning of all swear words and yet neither of my children swear - they have been taught the meaning and therefore are more considerate about insulting others.. My 10 year old daughter came home last week saying two girls in her class were saying ‘you are a virgin, that is so pathetic - you are such a baby!’ My daughter turned round and said ‘Do you actually understand the meaning of the word virgin? Yes, I am a virgin - I’m 10 years old - if you are not then someone should be going into jail as that’s disgusting’. The idea that 10 year old girls are going about saying that they are not virgins is horrifying! But then tik tok could be responsible 🙈🤷🏻‍♀️ thankfully my kids have zero interest in social media at the moment.

I’m the same. And I totally respect you as a parent! My 20 month old is a little chatter box for her age and has recently questioned why her older brother doesn’t talk (he has autism). She’s been telling me for a while “Arlo not talking” and I have always replied with “no, not today!” But recently she asked why and I explained to her in the most age appropriate way I could “Arlo has autism which means he doesn’t know how to talk yet” and she took it brilliantly. She’ll come to me everyday and ask “still autism?”. The more educated she is the better, and as she gets older and all the things you mentioned above get asked, I’ll approach it in the same way. Lovely to hear Anna and Jonathan feel the same way with theirs. X

Lyza Morcombe thank you for your kind reply! Your little girl sounds precious and reminds me so much of my daughter at that age! My son is also autistic. I am fortunate that my son has a great vocabulary and verbally has always been advanced. Do you use pecs (picture exchange communication system) or do you have an iPad app that allows your son to choose options (communicate that way)? Or have you tried learning baby sign language/ makaton, (I used the tiny talk signing program with both of my babies- alongside the word books) There are several books aimed at teaching siblings about autism. They really helped us explain why our son would get overwhelmed/and why she needed to let us calm him and not risk herself. Thankfully my son hasn’t had a meltdown in years- he tends to suffer more with shutdowns if he is overwhelmed. My son and daughter are best friends now and my daughter is fiercely protective of her big brother.

Ami Stewart thank you - I suspect that sometimes they may have preferred that I wasn’t so honest 🙈- but given they continue to ask these questions I have to assume that they prefer the truth to the false truths that the internet can teach them. I just hope it continues - it would be my worst nightmare that my son or daughter made assumptions about sex off the internet/ particularly from porn 😨

Oh my god! I can’t stop laughing!!! When Jonathon was talking about downing the boxes of Pringles!!!! I showed it to my husband and he found it so funny too. As a former bulimic I can totally relate - and my poor husband put on so much weight when he first met me too- for exactly the same reason Jonathon did. It’s nice to be able to laugh now at such dark times. However, this video also made me cry so much as it hits so close to home and brings back a lot of not so many distant memories. When i pluck up the courage to talk about my ED on my channel I’m definitely copying your idea and doing a video like this with my husband! Thank you for being so open and honest- and just being you! So interesting to hear Jonathan's perspective. My sister-in-law suffered(s) with Bulimia and when I first met her, I immediately saw the signs. One night when both of us were alone I offered her help and offered to help her find a therapist. Regardless of what I tried to do for her, her recovery was on her time. For years she would relapse, but I feel good that she knows I care and was always there for her. Like Jonathan, it is hard thing to watch from the outside, especially after you realize what is going on and knowing that they are doing more harm to themselves.

Michelle Gallegos you’ve said two things that are key to recovery from an ED or some kind of addiction. You can offer all the help in the world, but the person has to be ready to make changes and get help. The best you can do as a support person is be there and continue to offer positivity and help when you can.

I see so much of my husband in Jonathan. Anna, you are so lucky to have Jonathan, he is so supportive of you and it really shows in this video. I agree with you both on giving kids honest answers when they ask, my 20 month old has started to question why her older brother is different, I didn’t think I’d have to answer for a while (she’s very advanced for her age - ahh!). You and Jonathan are brilliant parents and it comes across when watching the children. It feels so good to see you looking so happy Anna. Sending you all the positive hugs ❤️

Such a great raw honest conversation. Laughed a lot at Jonathan’s honesty and blurting out things randomly. Lol

As someone who runs weight management and eating disorder programmes, everyone's story is different. I admire you immensely Anna for being honest. The difference on video between when you had Amelia and now is so much more positive. I hope you continue with ongoing health and happiness. I tell everyone at the start of my weight management programme...I'm not so interested in your weight, I am interested in your health.

I find this really sad, and really admire Anna for being so open. EDs are about control, and I think this has been evident of Anna’s personality. For anyone who is having difficulties I’d highly recommend Emma Woolf’s book Letting Go x

This was so good. Thank you Jonathan and thank you Anna for being so open and honest. I’ve definitely noticed you seem happier. You sharing your journey with us has really helped me. I started gaining weight over the last few years and have just felt so awful about my changing body. You’ve really helped me sort through those feelings and start accepting my body and learning to love it again.
