Being from Aroostook County, Caribou, Maine, it's pretty much a totally different state compared to southern Maine. People are far more friendly up here. It's a gorgeous place! The Fall foliage is wicked!!! Best in the state! We don't have any ocean fronts but Aroostook county's summers are spectacular as well, especially the outdoors kinda person. There are literally highways for dirt bikes, 4 runners, the side by side models are preferred just because there's so much space to ride! Northern Maine also possesses multiple big lakes, ponds, rivers for kayaking and tubing, plus numerous brooks and streams which makes fishing a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors! The people up here are some of the friendliest folks in America. Down to earth and not shy to strangers.

I lived in Caribou, my family is from there. I found it very difficult as an outsider to be accepted up there. I loved living there, my father had been a resident his whole life, but it was difficult as someone moving from outside of Caribou to feel welcome.

I moved to Maine last year in September, it’s been pretty great so far! Born and raised in Hawai’i and I’m happy to finally experience all 4 seasons. Our first winter was definitely brutal, but hope we’ll be prepared next winter. Thankfully everyone’s been nice thus far!

As a Texas transplant, it is difficult to find diverse types of jobs. Maine also knows it has a problem with attracting and keeping people here. That's why they started the 'Live and Work in Maine' initiative. The pandemic saw an increase in residents because now they can do their work remotely and can live anywhere. Otherwise they would have a hard time finding employment.

Ah yes this is a great point. The large company I previously worked for pre-pandemic is mainly remote workers now. Everyone was sent home and then just stayed there, commuting 1-2 times per week for meetings but that’s it. As someone who has only ever lived here, I definitely don’t have anything to compare to regarding the workforce, so it’s good to hear your perspective!!

It's so interesting to hear how similar some things are between states that are so far apart and have totally different cultural climates. I live in Central Florida, which is completely different than Southern Florida or Northern Florida. There are a LOT of stereotypes and assumptions about Florida. I spent some time living in Pennsylvania as a kid but I've never been to Maine, I'd love to visit one day! My sister and her bf literally just went to Maine last weekend. I love finding little hidden gem places that aren't as populated but that are gorgeous or fun. This was a very well put together, informative video, thank you so much!

Franklin County here, near Farmington. I've been in Maine for almost 9 years. I jokingly asked a friend when he was going to accept me as a Mainer. He said, "Never." He was joking, but wasn't. It was pretty funny. I get what he was saying though. Maine has its ways and those ways were created by true Mainers. In my area, we've got families that go back forever. Big families. We probably have a total of about 50 last names in my town and two of those last names belong to about half the people. Of course I'm being facetious, but hopefully your viewers get my point. It's different here, but it's great.

Let me start with last winter 2021-2022 probably the mildest winter I've experienced in Maine. I've seen temps as low as minus 30 in January. I used to plow Rockport (next town south of Camden) Some people might remember the tv show Peyton Place. (Filmed in Camden, Rockland, and Thomaston) Lobster is expensive in the local restaurants, but you can get it much cheaper off the boat. I've lived and worked here in Maine for 35 years, but born and raised in the Bronx, NY. (Appleton, Maine now.)

Hi! I can totally relate to the long, dark winters. I have fallen in love with Maine after visiting a few times over the last couple of years. Vermont is so dreary and only averages 58 days of sunshine per year. I once drove for hours into and through NH just chasing the sun. Currently, I am looking for a remote job and plan on moving to Maine for the summer and rving in warmer climates in the winter. I am older than you and lived my whole life in Vermont and I don't think that I can tolerate another winter. It's supposed to be -22 degrees F in a few days. Whippee :)!

It takes almost 2 hours to travel from Newport to Portland on the turnpike. From Newport to Frenchville it's 5 hours. From Bangor to Calais its 2.5 hrs. You absolutely can not get from one end of the state to another in 2 hours. York to the top of Maine is atleast a 7 hr drive. As far as cold, the closer you are to the ocean the warmer it is. You also don't get as much snow. A 2ft snowfall is almost unheard of unless you are up north, past Millinocket. And Mainers know, you shovel during storms. You don't wait until it ends and have to shovel all day. You knock it down every hour to keep it doable.

We just hit 90 on Saturday which had to be a record lol. 50s and 60s is Fall for us as well, but for some reason spring seems to always take forever to warm up. Seems like we're finally getting there though! And yes the Boston accent and Downeast accent are very very similar. Just for viewer clarity, Acadia NP is nowhere near Lubec. It is more than two hour southwest of there. That said, Lubec is a great little place. If visiting there, don't forget your passport and visit Campobello Island, Canada (connected to Lubec by a bridge). Visit Roosevelt Campobello International Park (RCIP) where FDR has his summer home. We built a seasonable home on Campobello almost 20 years ago after looking at land in Maine (from Bar aorth). We just love Campobello and Lubec. I also completely understand the dislike for transplants. There has been a mad rush for AZ as of late and I will tell you that true Arizonans hate it. Its 10x more expensive now, and its just way too populated here. I am an AZ native and while I do love this state, I have contemplated leaving because of how ridiculous it’s gotten. If you were to move to Maine from somewhere not in the north, it’s Winter for at LEAST 5 months, the sun goes down between 4: 30-6 for about half the year, it is COLD and dark for a LONG TIME so be aware. A LOT of people here have working fireplaces with wood/charcoal. Most people here are old fashioned as well, pretty much the opposite of what I imagine people from So Cal would be like haha, lot of old hardy people here, not super “hip and new” unless you were living in the center of Portland or something.

The Bangor daily news just did a story about drug overdoses, violence, and prostitution in library. They’ve had to put a time limit on using the bathroom at the library, And limit the bathroom to one person. My home value went from 200,000 to probably 400,000 and I’ll be moving to a safer area. “Before the pandemic, the library asked police for five or six criminal trespass orders a year to keep disruptive people from re-entering their doors. Library staff have asked for 43 in the last eight months, Treat said. There were also four overdoses in the building between November and March. Bangor police responded to 59 calls from the library between January and March this year, mostly for welfare checks, overdoses and disorderly conduct like fighting, said spokesperson Wade Betters. There were 11 service calls from the library during the same period last year.”

My wife and I are looking into Maine. We currently live in Roswell, NM. (Home of the infamous 1947 UFO crash👽). It wouldn’t be an easy move and it seems Maine has a housing issue and it’s more $ then here. We help run an alien tourist activity here and do well and the owners we work for our great, and leaving that behind would be tough especially if I don’t make as much considering my wife and I sell out art and photography in the shop as well! So we just have to keep researching and see if it can work out! I’d love to be out photographing lighthouses and nature. 👍🏻

I've been to Maine once, such a beautiful state. But idk if I could live there 😔 I'm more of a big city type of person. My husband prefers rural living, so we compromise and bought a house that's only about 40 min drove outside of a large city

I would love to chat with you and give you an idea if what its like to live in the county, particularly as someone not from Maine. My father was born there, my great grand parents came into the Allagash in the 1800s… would love to chat!!

I’m from Arizona; Gilbert specifically. I love AZ however, I absolutely love the state of Maine. My wife’s entire family is from Maine, Bangor/ Orno area where her brother is a professor at U Maine. My wife and I are contemplating on moving there sometime after the election but keeping our house here in Arizona. Plus, she misses her family and our boys would love the ocean and outdoor adventures. What are jobs like up there? I’m a police officer and my wife is a nurse, is there any opportunities for us? I know we would be taking a massive pay cut but it’s better than living on the surface of the sun lol! Thanks to taking the time to team our comments and providing a informative video! Looking at several counties ie Penobscot obviously and the suburbs of Portland in Cumberland county. Definitely not I’m the city. Thanks again!

Jobs are definitely available, much more so in the Portland area but with your professions I don't believe it would be difficult finding something in more Central Maine! I feel like the medical field especially is always hiring here. I definitely don't blame you for wanting to go somewhere with milder temps, ha! Arizona is definitely toasty!

Transplanted to Aroostook a few years ago. If I want to go to Lowe's, it's an hour. If I want to go to a decent size grocery store, it's a half hour; so yep it is rural but love it. You don't sound like you have any kind of Mainer accent??
@TheNightOwl1212
@TheNightOwl1212 2 жыл бұрын
Haha yup, that sounds like Aroostook! And I don't have anything super noticeable! I tend to pick it up when I'm around my father-in-law or even my husband for a length of time. I'm originally from southern Maine and it's less prominent there.

Hey I’m planning on moving to Yarmouth Maine and what insight can you recommend about Yarmouth Maine? Plus I’ve also been thinking about considering to move to caribou Maine, but I’ve heard shady things about caribou Maine. P.S. I do love the quietness and tranquility!
@TheNightOwl1212
@TheNightOwl1212 2 жыл бұрын
Haha well those two are VERY different from each other! Yarmouth is a suburb of Portland. It tends to be stereotyped as an "upper class" area. Lots of high value properties. Lots of tourists there as well in the summers, since the Portland area is so popular. As far as Caribou goes, I actually don't know a ton about it other than the fact that it's at the top of Maine in one of the ruralist counties haha. I'm sure it would be a lot quieter! Anywhere in Maine is beautiful though, just depends how close you want to be to amenities!

Hey! I found your videos looking for information about Maine. My husband and I are planning a trip in September to see if we would want to move permanently. We were thinking about seeing the common tourist places Kennebunkport, Portland, Bar Harbor. My parents have visited Maine and loved it. We have heard that crime rates are low and it looks beautiful to raise kids. We are looking to move in a year. Do you have any advice on towns/cities that are close to the “action” (like tourist things or traditional stores/ Lowes etc.) but have little neighborhoods? We are from Cary, NC in the south. We would want to be 20-30 min drive from a major town or city but buy a house in a little neighborhood. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sorry if this a super long question!

You can pretty much find big box stores all throughout the state, but if you're looking to be closer to the coastal part of Maine and somewhat near Portland, I would suggest Gray, Waterboro, Hollis, Wells.. I could go on and on haha. There are LOTS of smaller towns around Portland! Most are nice and quiet, have rural areas, but are still close to areas with a lot of things to do :-) I hope your trip is fun and you have a wonderful time here! It's truly a gorgeous state!
