I had emergency surgery in Milano in 1990. A public hospital. 6 beds in the room. I was shaved with a straight edge razor by a brute of a nurse . Then I was wheeled into the operating room and there was a row of men in scrubs and masks just standing in a line looking at me . I had to crawl naked onto the operating table. I spent 8 days in the hospital. I always thought I would write a book about it! 😅 It was my first experience in a hospital and I am American so it's quite different here. But I survived 😂

My sons were born in Canada in the 1970s. Nobody was allowed at the birth. I can’t remember but I think they showed me both of them and then whisked them away. I am pretty sure I had to look through a nursery window to look at them. I can’t remember. All of my sisters and I had almost no labour. With my second son my husband went out and I almost had to call an ambulance. I was only at the hospital about an hour before he was born. The next day another mother said she was mad. I arrived had a baby. Left the room and she was still there! We had a laugh about it.

Nicki, that's crazy that Carlo was not allowed to sleep in the private room with you, but your mum was, especially after hearing that the doctor was freely willing to expose your privates to the other husbands. How that was completely fine with the hospital and your husband could not sleep in the room with you...Just nuts. Thank you for sharing your stories. So glad you each had healthy, lovely girls. Miss' Nicki and Elisabeth, as a male speaking on such a delicate and special part of a woman's life experience, i believe that I would just crumble to pieces if put through an archaic situation as just expressed. To be clear, the situation of not knowing the processes happening. In the end your children hide no errors (are all fit and healthy) and the two of you seem recovered from the individual events. I could and would not know how to cope with NOT being at the birth for my children... ...This is probably a primal leftover for want/needing to take care and provide. The two of you as a couple talking is just easy to take in and soak-up. Grazie Mille... ❤

I did part of my midwifery training in the UK. It was such a great experience. Mothers were never left alone during labor. Fathers could be present at the birth. Children visited on Sundays to see their new sibling. The babies stayed by their mum in a bassinet in the day and went to the nursery at night They were brought out for breast feeding only. We had about 90% breast feeding rate. There were enforced rest periods for each mother during the morning and a shorter one in the afternoon. The ward was closed to visitors, doctors lab techs etc. and those women all went right to sleep. We did lots and lots of baby care teaching, especially for first time mothers, so once they went home they were proficient in feeding, and bathing that precious little one. I might add that this was a Christian Hospital and many of my fellow pupil midwives were headed into the mission field. 😊We always knelt around the delivery table after the safe delivery and thanked God for this new life. No mother ever rejected this and that included non Christians and atheists! Then a bell was rung out of a window to let the community know a new child had been born. I know the hospital was closed after a few more years. But it was a shining example of how humane and well run a hospital can be. Everything was done with love and great respect for the mothers and babies. I will never forget my experiences there. I did not receive anything like such care in American hospitals where my three sons were born. To get a sense of my experience watch the TV series ‘ Call the Midwife’ . I cried watching the first episode, as it brought back a wonderful time in my life.

My goodness Nicki! Your story was incredible! When I had my son 35 years ago, we knew he was in a breach position but a C section was not scheduled. My water broke early so I went in for the operation and my husband did also. My son was very tiny, 5 lbs, so we both had to stay in the hospital 5 nights. Thank God the doctor realized my son was breach because the umbilical cord was around his neck 3 times! Otherwise he would not be here today. Great talk ladies!

I have been working on my family tree for over 20 years. While the older people are still alive, somebody needs to do the family tree. Lots of great software for doing so is out there. Every experience is different! Thank you for sharing your experiences in such a comfortable and open way. Nicki, you are correct, it’s all worth it in the end! To have these beautiful children to love and adore is the true miracle! I won’t get into the nightmare of my first birth that rendered me infertile… until God miraculously healed my body 14 years later. After the first, we adopted two children. Then surprisingly had two birth children late in life. None of my births (all c-sections) were the same. Our two oldest daughters have given birth beautifully (so far, so good). All three grandchildren’s births were so very different. 4th grand baby due March 4.

I had my second child at the Ospedale Civile di Pordenone in 1978. My family was stationed at Aviano Air Force Base in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of Italy. There were three midwives (ostetriche) in the delivery room with me. Our typical stay in the hospital after delivery was five days. As an American military wife, I stayed in a room for two women. Their practice was to put two American women together, so we could communicate with each other. There was a glass-enclosed nursery next to my room where our babies stayed during the day. On the other side of the nursery was a room for two Italian mothers. We could see our babies all day long. It was a very pleasant experience for me.

You brought a memory I had forgotten Nicki. When I gave birth to my son here in Canada 40 yrs ago, prior to going to delivery, they did shave you AND give you an enema (not sure which one I liked least...). 4 yrs later when I had my daughter they didn't do either (I was thankful). I had private rooms with my own bathroom but I too had to pay extra. My husband was allowed at the birth.

Interesting, I gave birth 40 yrs ago in Canada as well then 2.5 years later again. I had a private room for labour and there was another separate room for delivery set up for any circumstance for both deliveries in diff hospitals. My husband was a valued part of the team who coached my breathing through my long labours and deliveries. Then I had a shared room with one other Mom and we shared a bathroom. Both the Dr's and nurses were amazing in both hospitals.

Ladies, I celebrate the positive results of your birthing experiences - three beautiful girls. ❤ Having a similar experience to Nicki, an on-call doctor preformed an emergency C-Section. Although I was at a top US modern hospital in an affluent area and speaking in my native language, it turned out to be chaotic and dangerous because of this doctor’s unprofessional actions. After her birth, I too wasn’t able to hold our daughter for several hours. For me the nurses were lovely. One nurse reported the traumatic experience to the head of nursing - not happy with my treatment from the on-call doctor. My own doctor was upset by the handling of my emergency C-Section by this doctor. She filed a formal complaint to the hospital board. My husband felt helpless, tossed to the side, left in the dark of what was happening. Thank goodness a young nurse took it upon herself to give my husband an update because he thought something went terribly wrong. 😢 It took me years to talk about because it was a very scary experience with a formal investigation of this doctor. My baby girl is a healthy, thriving 24-year old. ❤ Modern doesn’t equate competent, compassionate, and caring. I’m happy that your mothers were there for you.❤️

Wow, Nicki, hearing your story makes me so sad. I was a nurse in 2003 in the U.S. I cannot imagine treating anyone like that, ever. This is the polar opposite of what an experience should have been. The total lack of respect, dignity, common decency alone is appalling. I cannot imagine anyone ripping off your covering and telling you to spread your legs, in front of your own husband, let alone lone in front of strangers. What an absolute nightmare. But, as a retired nurse, I always, always encourage anyone who is going to be in the hospital for any reason to have someone there who is coherent and capable of advocating for you at all times, no exceptions. I have absolutely enjoyed your visits with Elizabeth and other friends. Please keep doing this whenever possible. Thank you for sharing your stories. Have a wonderful weekend!

Giving birth in Spain twice was a very nice experience. Nice and modern hospital, great doctor and friendly nurses and the bedrooms very clean and comfortable. My husband was allow to film the natural birth and the doctor invited him to cut the umbilical cord.

Thanks for sharing Nicki and Elizabeth! Gosh its allways a big emotional thing to birth a baby. I had a very strong woman friend who was a nurse and midwife and had encouraged me to have a natural birth at home but sadly i wasnt able to so she supported me in the hospital and took me back to her home afterwards which was such a huge blessing for me and my son. Being a solo parent i truly appreciated her loving support and a peaceful environment to bond with my baby. She really guarded me from some very nasty prejudice i was given as an unwed Mum back then. Good to hear your stories thanks and how beautiful your girls are now! 🥰

Thank you for sharing your birth stories, I think it's so important that women have an opportunity to share their birth stories both for personal benefits and to bring these experiences into the public consciousness.

I'm sorry you had those experiences! So bizarre how they don't allow you to see the baby right away. I agree with Elizabeth...southern Italy has always been a little behind the rest of Italy in medicine.

Great sharing of experiences. I could see the emotion when you were telling your story Nicki, it's already very emotional to recount our birthing stories but when you have such distancing and difficult beginnings it's is very hard. Thanks to both of you for sharing your heartfelt stories. We know many woman have had very unnecessarily difficult and births due to treatment, hearing your stories made me feel your anguish but thankfully your kids are great and hopefully you had beautiful experiences the moment the unpleasantness was over. :)))

My husband had 32 first cousins as both his mother and father came from enormous families. I had 5 so I was overwhelmed when I met them all at a big family party when all the aunts, uncles and cousins attended.

I had two c sections both around forty years ago in the US. Here the father can come into the operating room but I didn’t get to hold the baby until after I was in recovery. C section is very different than natural but at least my husband could be there with me. They did let him go to the nursery and hold our son while I was in recovery. Good for your mother Nicki!! She is a hero!
