Right? I can set one down for five seconds, blink, and suddenly it has teleported away to the Plane of Lost Socks.

You're wonderful. The mandolin riffing captured my soul since I was 17 or so. I couldn't learn the instrument because of developmental problems. Listening to your work really does it for me and I appreciate that. Now it's 54 years later and I look forward to your videos. Thanx again, and to Pentangle, who lit the first spark.

I have a 22.72" scale Squier Mini electric guitar from which I've removed the top and bottom strings, and I keep the remaining four string tuned in octave mandolin tuning. It's such a beautiful sound, even without double courses. A few years ago, I switched to Ultem picks from the Acetal picks I'd been using for about 25 years before that. The Ultem plastic has a much brighter sound and snappier feel than Acetal plastic.

I am a huge fun, and I would beg you to try and play greek Bouzouki at some point. I d love to see how it compares as an experience to your octa mandoline. Again, huge fun, love your work.

Thanks very much, I've just subscribed to your channel, I've always loved your playing. I've used Wegen picks for about six years and love them, but I've never thought of concealing a pick like that? I'll try that on Tenor guitar. Take care, David.

Thanks for bringing the octave forward. And the focus on quality traditional Celtic using. I’m about 5 decades ahead of you but of similar ilk. Besides playing mandolin, mandola, bouzouki & bass mandolin + (with my trio Mandology and with the Albuquerque Mandolin Orchestra) I do frequent house concerts here in Albuquerque. Please be in touch if you want to take it on the road. Host workshops as well (since you like to teach.). Host the annual Zoukology first weekend in February. Faculty is set for this year, but you’d clearly be a good fit.

First off, love all your videos! Made me restring my old mandolin I haven’t touched in well over a decade! Second, is there a non-Reels version of your gold tune octave mandolin recommendation video? I don’t have Instagram. Finally, do you know how to play the mandolin portion of Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters by Elton John? I can’t find any tablature or even sheet music anywhere for it. Sorry if you’ve answered all or a couple these on your Patreon. I’ll check there if so. Thank you!

I'd normally be hesitant to buy picks at $10 a pop because they like to run away when you aren't looking, but I've heard really good things about Wegen. Your pick looks like a TF - just curious, which do you prefer, the TF100, 120, or 140?

Hello! I play the guitar but watching your videos made me want to buy an octave mandolin :) Do you have any recommendations for entry level ones? I just found a "Thomann Octave Mandolin 1087A-P" from Thomann around here (I live in the UK), but I'm not sure if it is worth paying that little for it or if it would be a waste of money.

I've thought about learning Octave Mandolin, since the higher pitches of Mandolin doesn't sit with me too well. I also found Irish/Celtic tunes more interesting than Bluegrass.

It can be! I studied electric bass and cello before learning octave mando, so that helped with the transition. Maybe check out some left hand stretches for playing bass 🤔

Hiya, Love your music. I play guitar and Ukelele (tuned differently to each other) and I would love to have a go at the octave mandolin (bouzouki?) (also tuned differently) but I cannot find one to buy (looked on Ebay and Google to no avail). Where could I buy one? (like yours) :o) Ian

Same here. Convert a cheap travel guitar to OMfor short money.
@tooties545
@tooties545 Жыл бұрын
@@mojoefelix I was thinking of that with a 3/4 size guitar. Also, a regular 12 string can be sorta, kinda converted. Remove top E strings and G strings, move bottom E & B strings up one position. Tune A strings to G, leave D strings as is. Tune former B strings to A, Bottom strings, formerly in B position to E. Of course using proper gauge strings.

I would suggest you to invest in an irish bouzouki, if that is cheaper (I think it is). Or you can make your own octave mandolin at home - it's not easy, but with the right tools, it's achiavable. I made mine over 3-4 weeks.

Isn’t “Bouzouki” another name for this instrument?
@DylanDekk
@DylanDekk 6 ай бұрын
The term "octave mandolin" (OM) is more or less interchangeable with "Irish bouzouki" (IB). Greek bouzoukis are a totally different beast. Both OMs and IBs are usually tuned in GDAE or GDAD and obviously you can jump between those as you see fit. The biggest difference is typically just scale length, with IBs being a little bit longer. You can find OMs advertised as short-scale IBs, etc.
