Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I am a "boomer" born in 1948, and I also think there needs to be a youthful turnover in Congress. I applaud younger politicians with a progressive message. I wouldn't be following your shows if I didn't believe wholeheartedly in progressive politics. I live in WNC, but spare us from the Madison Cawthorns of our broken system. As to gun law reform, I am all for it. And there again, we need some younger voices and votes in Congress who actually have children.

We need a wide variety of people in Congress: young, old, middle aged, and of course every demographic. We don't really need more people who look like me: old and pale. I would hate to lose old women to be replaced with young idiots no matter their skin color. I agree with all you have said. I started stuffing envelopes when I was 12, 54 years ago. I might as well keep working at it.

I had a website open during the calls to answer those questions. I also distinctly remember a conversation with a former felon In GA who wanted to vote but was under the impression he could never vote again, and I looked into the rules that applied to him while I was on the phone with him, and he actually wrote things down as I read them to him.

I can understand the passion you and many other Americans have for politics, particularly re gun laws.... it is so (bleep! bleep!) obvious to those of us not living in the US that "a good man with a gun" is NOT the answer to the mindboggling statistics of gun fatalities and gun ownership in the US. The Atlantic's story "The Gun Industry Created a New Consumer. Now It’s Killing Us" by Ryan Busse was an eye opener for me - among many other illuminating articles from some of your more brilliant writers. How to fix the student loan crisis without forgiving all loans: 1. All existent loans stop accumulating interest. 2. Set interest rates to match the Fed rate. Ta-da the amount of interest owned will stop increasing exponentially. After that talk about forgiving loans if you want it to end faster. But, forgiving loans without any structural changes will just create this crisis again.

I kind of hate the whole HSR Bakersfield to Merced argument. Yes, obviously SF to LA makes is what everyone wants in an ideal world, but the eminent domain issues create a huge nightmare, so to start with Bakersfield to Merced and build out from there isn't the worst thing ever. The 13-minute, 42-second 1942 US Department of Agriculture video *Hemp for Victory* is the key to reducing unemployment, reducing poverty, reducing hunger, reducing homelessness, reducing health care costs, reducing crime, reducing police brutality, reducing government spending, reducing political corruption, reducing pollution, replacing fossil fuels, ending deforestation and stopping climate change, all at the same time. There is an official .gov link to the film from the US National Archives. It has been public since 1990. Since World War II, the US has waged war against the American people over the same "Marihuana" plant that was legalized to defend the US during World War II. We pay billions of dollars in taxes every year for police and prisons and allow the sale of surplus military hardware to local and state law enforcement agencies to be used against the American people in the war on drugs, while simultaneously allowing the sale of military-equivalent firearms to the general public to "fight against big government tyranny." It's all a lie, just to sell more guns. It is a multibillion-dollar industry and We the People pay the ultimate price for private corporate profits. No one is using guns to fight the government. Most of the gun owners in the US are right-wing zealots who want the big government to exterminate hippies and minorities. The entire police/gun culture in the US has been built up over the last 100 years based on Cannabis prohibition. Therefore, ending Cannabis prohibition will begin to correct this century-old injustice and reform our society the way that it should have been after World War II. There was a bill introduced in the US House of Representatives titled HR 3652, the *Hemp for Victory Act of 2019.*

And without knowing anyone from the podcast at all, I can tell you that I know they care deeply about what happened as evidenced by the deeply emotional podcast that Dan and John had last week. We should all be outraged. However unless we have seats in political office to make legislative decisions there is little we layman can do besides donate money, have these difficult conversations with the people in our lives, and vote. And at some point talking about these horrors can be detrimental to moral and mental health. Especially when it feels like screaming into the void bc nothing is being done about it. As John Lovettit said they are burnout. They didn’t have to record anything and post on a national holiday. It is important to allow ourselves and each other to remember to have fun in order to make sure that we’re all taking care of our long term health. So I hope you are trying to find ways to cope with what’s going and are taking care of yourself.

@@rachelbyrum7488 I really appreciate your kind and very thoughtful reply and I agree with you in everything except with this: We can do more now. We can stop working. We can stop going to school. We can strike until the national legislature stops letting our kids get killed. Most countries in the western 1st world won't move on from this and march and strike until legislation is passed. If we can get 30%, heck even 10% of us and create a big dent in their precious economy that bribes our politicians, I'd bet they'll pass legislation quicker than we think. Since money It's all they care about. This reply is not a guilt trip. It's a fact. We have an option that can help us stop this. Other western democracies have done it with issues like this and other issues and has worked. We can do something now.

@@luisvarela7827 While I share your frustration & outrage, I don't think your plan is realistic. So many Americans are barely getting by & cannot afford to participate in a general strike. By 'cannot afford,' I don't mean the loss of income would eat into their entertainment & vacation budget; it would eat into their grocery money. Food banks are struggling to fulfill the staggering needs of singles & families.

@@Tupelo927 I fully understand that. I do believe that we have at least 10% and maybe even if 5% do it It will be noticeable and will change things. There are studies about this in western 1st world democracies. The powerful only care about money. So that’s were we can make a dent. Even 5% will heavily disrupt the whole greedy system.

All these diets work by restricting calories. There are so few things you can have, that you eat the same thing over and over. Your palate gets board so you eat less. They showed with Atkins and South Beach that when capitalism kicked in and created many more options, people quit losing weight. The book “Mindless Eating” is a great book that studies all these diets. There may be a good reason to follow one of these diets. My granddaughter became seizure free on keto. I have no more asthma attacks on paleo. But weight loss is not a good reason to follow one of these diets, from what I have read.

Atkins is a ketogenic diet, which is tricter and less based on facts. The problem is the same with many ketogenic diets, it can help you lose weight, without most of the benefits of weightloss such as better heart health and blood sugar control.

Predatory interest is definitely the real problem, but not something that can be changed by executive action. We need to get a real congress in place for that. (My student loan was at 8 1/2% interest and I thought that was great-- about half of what a home loan was.)

No, I don't think we should forgive all student debt. For one, there is a huge disparity in the cost of education at different institutions. A student who "settled" for a state university to avoid debilitating debt shouldn't be treated so unfairly as one who chose to attend an Ivy League. I mean, congratulations on getting in, but Ivy Leagues usually have a debt forgiveness program anyway. There's no reason for the taxpayers to foot that bill when the schools can well afford to pay it themselves. I really like the theory behind the Obama program where those who work in public service or non-profits can get their loans forgiven after a certain number of years. The execution was horrible, so tangled up in red tape that it was nearly useless. For now, the means tested $10,000 is ok. I just wish it was more focused on state schools and public service. I think this could and should totally be used to address the teacher shortage. Quite frankly, without some sort of assistance, no one can afford to major in Education. I don't mind helping out the MBAs, but we should be far more focused on teachers. The money's limited.
