I hated patchouli when I was young. I didn’t like aldehydes either. Now I like both. It’s funny how our tastes change when we age.
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
I think that's a lot of people's experience actually! I always think that as we age, we become more tolerant to smells as our sense of smell begins to dull. I remember really enjoying light sparkly aquatics when I was in my early 20s, now I think I need something punchier to appreciate 😂

@@dr.claire.perfume I feel like all our tastes change so much as we age! I listen to music now that would have made me feel so stressed when I was younger! And when it comes to food, most children are fussy and unadventurous and hate bitter foods (I think I watched a documentary that said we evolved to be suspicious of bitter tastes because they’re often poisonous?!), but then later in life most people start to enjoy a much wider range of textures and flavours. My perfume tastes have really changed since I started KZbin!
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
Yes bitter food aversion I think I read peaks at around 2. Before that we are open to most things and then afterwards, childhood is a journey to slowly tolerate and like things again. That's why it's important to keep trying children with different foods and not give up. 🥰

Loved this 2nd part. Yes - I am boycotting fragrance companies that have been implilcated in genocide. I really appreciated hearing from you about the problem with Jasmine - so informed and helped me make decisions. I only recently got back into commercial perfumes after strictly being interested in essential oils - and of course - all of the ethics issues that they involved. I really appreciated your answer about health concerns and perfumes and your reasoning for not going down that rabbit hole made perfect sense. My first purchases after getting back into perfume was Sana Jardin, Rook, and Habibi New York. I am noticing that I am feeling compelled to purchase more even though I have around 30 right now. I am thinking that I will limit myself to about 50 perfumes. I am not on YT so I don't need any more than that. I also want to ensure that I am being a good steward of my finances and not getting caught up in having the latest trend. I am mostly purchasing from small, indie brands who have ethics I align with. I did get two perfumes from my daughter who works at a thrift store - $2 total. I would not have purchased them otherwise because I am avoiding department store brands. Thanks again for a thoughtful video. No other channel is quite like yours. I enjoy lots of other channels but yours is very unique in a lot of ways. Appreciate you!
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
Thank you for your lovely message ❤️ I appreciate it. Yes ethical concerns are something that are only just filtering through the fragrance world it seems. Sadly, the whole L'Oréal/ Estée Lauder thing passed by without a mention from all but two bigger channels that I noticed (both of whom I consider to be reasonably ethical themselves, Persolaise and Aaron TH). I was really happy to make a review of Sana Jardin fragrances because I really liked their ethos of funding set ups and training for out of season businesses based around fragrance waste products, so I can see why you are drawn to those kinds of brands and also to indie. Indie really is worth the hunt and secondhand too is fab. One dollar for a fragrance is mad! The whole designer and mainstream niche market seems to promote overconsumption these days. The in-built obsolescence is overt with how many fragrances simply disappear after less than a year on the market today. Social media drives people to buy too unfortunately as it normalises excessive consumption. I do love sampling though and I find that that can scratch the itch for me for trying something new without me buying new bottles. Thanks for watching 🥰

Wow these were very detailed interesting questions! And so were your answers! I really think there is something to what you said about the connection between traumatic events and getting into perfume… When I think about it, I was never into perfume before my daughter died, and very soon after she passed I got heavily into essential oils. I think that was a precursor to my love of fragrance. That is so fascinating! I do sometimes wonder about the endocrine disrupters… Do you think there would be much advantage to spraying on clothing as opposed to on skin?
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
There were some great questions for sure ❤️ I really think it's a thing... My deeper interest in fragrance also ramped up massively after a year of huge stress. I can name many other people who I know on social media that this was a thing for too. I could speculate as to why but I'm not a psychologist, I do wonder whether it's a minor distraction because of senses being stimulated, maybe a little dopamine hit too or just a way of refocusing. I guess it depends on the route of exposure really as to whether spraying on clothing might be better than skin. If we are breathing it in and being exposed that way, then perhaps it won't matter. If it's skin contact and absorption, then yes! I did say some things cross the skin barrier, but to get a molecule to reach the bloodstream after skin application is quite a challenge, there's a whole lotta research into that for drug design. Really most things will only penetrate into particular skin layers and go no further, but that's only from my understanding, which is limited!!! 🥰

Great advice for new fragrance channel. I think that goes for most channels too. And burnout is real. I do think that some very reasonably priced fragrances smell very nice to me but others that smell terrible to me cost a lot. Sometimes it comes down to taste. However I think I have some bias, that a really inexpensive brand won’t smell good lol. I think learning about EL will possibly change my purchases. I’d love to have a side bar conversation on IG about that

It's the easiest way to subs but also hard to compete. Yes ❤ More Claire ❤ I truly adore your thoughtful approach to fragrance. I think Dior Homme perfume and YSL Libre are modern masterpieces. Both are designer fragrances. Introducing Iris into men’s fragrances and Lavender into women’s fragrances was really innovative. BR540, IMHO, is just an ambroxan end game. In that sense, it might be a masterpiece but it doesn’t resonate with me either. I really appreciate your integrity and intellectual drive. I also like the strong, personal connection to fragrance you’ve conveyed throughout this journey. There is a cacophony of smells and fragrances and masking scents around us. I think the “plague doctor’s mask” is a modern metaphor for our current world of fragrance. We surround ourselves with a scent that makes us feel beautiful and healthy and that filters out the unhealthy and distasteful scents surrounding us. The world is full of surprises and constants that can make us feel bad or aggravate our mood and breathing and wellbeing. Fragrances can support and sustain us. ❤
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
Thank you! ❤️ Mmm yes! I agree on Dior Homme, the first version was a wow! And Libre took lavender in a new direction too. I do think scent is added to so many things that it perhaps doesn't need to be added to these days. It's sometimes something we just don't have a choice on and it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes with some products. Fragrance in itself is very calming though and I love being able to actively choose what I smell all day. 🥰

I knew something was amiss because you normally take the time to respond to your viewers comments. I don’t know what happened.. but I guess to paraphrase, I was really moved by your thoughts on the link between trauma and fragrance collecting; made me self reflect and realize the loss of my mom, and several close relatives/ friends in a very short span of time really precipitated my obsession with fragrances. I also just wanted to thank you for answering my question and highlighting all the work you do behind the scenes, it was really informative and impressive! Thank you for all you do, Claire.

I think you’re one of the first fragrance KZbinrs I’ve ever heard cover the health and safety concerns over fragrances. I hear about it more from people around me, but never hear it addressed in videos. I’m always wondering if anyone in the comment section says anything, especially to the KZbinrs that promote overspraying. I’ve heard people complaining loudly about people wearing a lot of fragrance while shopping, but I think one of the worst things was when I watched a video of a woman who was re-organizing her shelf of fragrances. And someone in the comments wished her to be terminally ill from her fragrances 😱 What is with some people?!!!!
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
I think it's because 1. People don't know enough about it to be able to talk knowledgeably about it. 2. No one wants to potentially put off brands giving them pr by causing alarm😂 3. No one with affiliate links wants to dissuade people from not buying through them by addressing the issue. I was on the bus to meet Gabi recently and some people behind me complained about my fragrance (I had just sprayed it as I got on the bus, it was strong as it hadn't yet settled). I didn't especially care really... The bus normally smells of we*d... I later heard them discussing which clothes they were going to wear to go to court 🤷♀️ Wow, in some ways that shocks me and in other not. Honestly, here so many people are lovely, but as soon as you get to a certain number of subs, some people seem to think you are fair game or not a real person with feelings. Things people would never say in real life, they do say online. It's sad really, but a small but vocal minority of people are truly horrible. 🥰

Thanks again for this Q&A video, Claire! I enjoyed the whole video, as I did while watching part one on Sunday. But of course I was particularly interested in your answer to my own question. 🙂 I'm not an expert about super sensors nor about those with synesthesia, and it hadn't occurred to me that some individuals might experience both of these sensory capabilities. I do recall learning in grad school that, perhaps counterintuitively, supertasters have a harder time tolerating many flavors relative to people with less taste sensitivity. Riffing on your interest in this area, I wonder if super tasters and synesthesia in particular, might be extra sensitive to certain scent notes or not? If they are extra sensitive to scent, do they still gravitate more strongly to enjoying concentrated fragrance notes even though they may prefer foods with milder flavor profiles? And I'm certainly no expert about the huge number of computations that might be needed to isolate the function of specific olfactory receptor genes in order to correlate them with individuals' scent notes preferences. But I'll offer up something that occurred to me recently. While working on my dissertation between 2009 and 2011, I used a qualitative study design to identify conceptual themes from the interviews of six participants, as they discussed their long-term proactive efforts to practice cross-cultural psychotherapy as competently as possible. While working on this project, I learned I had ADHD my whole life. There were so many days when I was just spinning to "compute" these themes via qualitative methods from, essentially a full books-worth of interview transcripts. Fast forward to last month when I was shopping online on a major retailer: after clicking on the five stars to get a statistical bar graph, I was served up an AI generated set of customer feedback themes. It didn't take me long to realize I was looking at AI generated qualitative Thebes themes from the narrative portions of customer feedback! So AI is now able to generate themes just as efficiently as software can calculate academic-level statistics. So... I'm guessing your fantasy study might be functionally possible at some point? I'm additionally cautiously hopeful we can find a way to ensure our DNA privacy will be protected if technology indeed becomes effective enough to help us answer questions like yours with relative ease. Thanks again, Claire! May you find technology aids you in pursuing intriguing new areas of study in the future! 🦋🧡🦋
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
Hi Candy! Yes! I have read the same thing, that super tasters like mild foods and are generally picky eaters. I have no idea if super sensitivity in one sense crosses over to others. I can imagine it might with tastes and smell as smell is incredibly important to taste, but I guess it depends upon whether the super tasting is because of taste bud density or something like that Vs something more general about their genetics and olfactory receptor profile. Yes, AI is seeping into everything isn't it? I can really see a lot of my research being automated at some point. Students now use AI more and more and that worries me because they rely on it. Reading it back really shows that it only looks at open sources of info and completely mashes facts sometimes. DNA sequencing does need more regulation to protect people. It's truly an identifier isn't it? It's essentially a huge book of data on protected characteristics from a data protection point of view. And the implications for insurance etc are stopping people from exploring it. I would love to see entire populations sequenced, it would be an incredible scientific resource even anonymised, but I can see and understand the resistance to it. Thanks for your very interesting question 🥰

I don't have any of the private line at all, only the main line, because of the pricepoint of the private line and the wide availability of reasonable clones. But I do think that people who are looking for just one special fragrance (not collectors) do go towards higher end brands, like Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford. @@dr.claire.perfume I’m still quite intrigued by Amouage and am debating whether to add another one to the 2 I own and absolutely love: Guidance and Lilac Love old formulation.

@@acc426I am really thinking of adding Guidance 46 at one point, but it‘s 500€. It‘s crazy expensive. Regrettably the original was smelling rather rotten on my skin although I liked it on my clothes.

The 10 middle eastern ones had me cracking up a little... I know you pretty much don't have any of the "cheapy" ones in your collection anymore. And Amouage is pricy, even when finding a good deal. Most of my cheapy ones are Tom Ford dupes... 😂

Yes, I really lucked out finding my Amouage, it was less than £40 😱 I guess that one isn't hyped so that's probably why, but it's really a big love for me so I was so happy to find it! I always think of my collection as relatively inexpensive, there are very few that I paid more than £40 for, but then, I buy secondhand mostly. I would absolutely love to find an affordable Middle Eastern fragrance that I can't get enough of, it would do my channel wonders, cos that's really where the views are, plus if I could find a full price £20 fragrance that that would be fab for me too... Really, if I could wax lyrical about them I would 😂 but most smell plasticky or like fuel to me 🤷♀️ I tried Shaghaf Oud Tonka about a month ago and I had to throw the card away. I just don't seem to smell what others smell with Lattafa, Afnan and Swiss Arabian. I have Khamrah to try tonight though so fingers' crossed that I love that! 😊 I do still keep trying them to make sure I don't miss anything. Yes! I have four fragrances from Tom Ford, none from the Privée line, and only one was bought retail from a discounter, they are just so expensive full price! If I wanted one from the Privée line, I think I'd buy a clone too. Thanks for watching 🥰

@dr.claire.perfume Actually Oud Tonka and Khamrah are on the shopping block for me. I plan on doing a full wear and then decide. You got that Amouage for a steal! 😱 indeed. Ya, I don't have the patience for second hand... I don't think much is available here and I don't do Facebook or Instagram. Good "cheapies" for me have been Lovely Chérie and Nebras. Got a nice more subtle dupe of Roses Vanille called Vanilla Rose, I think... and my Fève Delicieuse dupe seems promising... But some definitely tend to be very sweet and/or plasticky.

I think I need to try some more to be able to find some gems! Khamrah was not for me either unfortunately. I don't know why that has got so much hype having now sampled it. I must smell something very different to other people (or not have been sent a free bottle 😉). At lot of people suggest Nebras, I think that Billie Eilish did well didn't it? I tried some extremely pricey Guerlains including fève delicieuse this last week. I'll probably make a video ☺️

@dr.claire.perfume Oh, can't wait to hear about your thoughts. I'm now standoffish about middle eastern dupes. I wait to hear about many reviews. And even then, I try not to buy. Yara Tous was so awful to my nose.

Is that the yellow one? I saw someone buy and open that one on YT yesterday, her verdict was, "oh... well, I don't hate it". I can totally see your caution with them. I just got a bit annoyed at feeling I was wasting my money when I seemed to constantly choose things that weren't for me, but I hope that with sampling I will find something lovely. 🤞

The question about a master piece is a tough one ? We all have a different answer to that one ?
@dr.claire.perfumeАй бұрын
Yes! For sure! And even different ideas of what that means 😂 I could list quite a few I think but whether anyone else agrees is quite another thing 🤣

@@dr.claire.perfume exactly it’s more of what that fragrance means to me that makes it a masterpiece 🤷♀️

I love the Kenzo ad. Obviously inspired by this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXSneoyse9KajZo as it's the same director. Still very good.

Sorry for the late reply with this comment, YT filtered it to junk because of the link... Yes! It's very similar isn't it?! I love what they did with the mirrors in the Kenzo ad and in the music video! So good for 24 years ago! Thanks for watching!
