As a German, this system is just bonkers to me. How can you expect pregnant people to work that long??? Insanity! In German you have to stop working 6 weeks before your due date and can start 8 weeks after giving birth (it can even be longer if you have twins or a premature baby). Really hope that the US will one day realise how insane this system is. All the best for you pregnancy!

Right?! Here in the UK, you can take up to a year off and your mat leave can start up to 11 weeks before your expected due date if you wish.

I'm going to med school this fall and I worry about my timeline for having kids. Could you go more into detail about having kids as a woman in medicine and when the "best" years would be to start? As a child of health professionals, there is no "best" time the more you wait the you'll stress. People make it work all the time you just have to be prepared. I remember my mom being in the hospital working long hours and come home to make sure we had breakfast and was on the school bus. It's all about what you want. A lot of people depending on what the demographic of your school, will already be in relationships or married with kids. You just make it work the best as you can. I'm sure you will make the of what you got, and take out loans if you need for help, you got to pay them back anyway so might as well use them if you need it. What is also important is a good support system so having family or people you trust you know what won't harm your kids is a great way to go. You got this and congrats on going to med school!

I’ve heard the best timing is in year 4 because it’s more relaxed and you aren’t doing as many important rotations.

Crazy to think you need to work until the day you give birth! Here in Belgium you have 15weeks of paid pregnancy leave. 1 week of that you are obligated to take the week before due date but can take up to 6weeks before due date and the rest you take after birth. So if you take only 1week before due date you would take 14weeks after birth and if you take 6weeks before you only get 9 after birth. Also you can take up to 4months of paid parental leave (both mom &dad can take same amount) but also this you can also choose to split it up in for example part time for 8months or what ever suits you best and your work. It sucks:( I know multiple female physicians who scheduled a c-section so they could "fit" the birth into the hospital's schedule and return to work in ~6 weeks. It's brutal. Thankfully, the new generation of physicians are starting to demand better policies, and my hope is that things will change for the better.

It's kinda crazy to me that a maternity leave of several months doesn't affect the timeline of residency. In italy all the months you're at home are added at the end of your residency because it's seen as months you were supposed to be learning and instead took off. The 2 colleagues of mine who had pregnancies will finish later on and even have the end of the year exam at a different time compared to everybody else because of the shifting in their timeline. But anyway congrats for your wonderful news, in our field it's so tough because we're made to feel as if it's never the right time and you'll lose opportunities/learning experiences because of your decision but at the same time if you wait until you're completely settled that means you won't start your family until 35/36...

I feel very grateful that we have 2 years of paid maternity leave 🙈 plus 8 weekes off, paid too, before giving birth. And residency seems to be a generally very good time of having children, here in Romania too. We do 6 years of medical school ( but directly after High School, at the age of 19 ) and 4 to 6 years of residency.

8 weeks to me is insanity. In Ontario (Canada), we get up to 17 weeks of pregnancy leave (pre delivery) and up to 18 months of parental leave.

Here, it's norm... for the parent to take out 1 year each... And it's norm for the mom to go on pregnancy leave 6-2 weeks before due date

It works similar in Poland where your maternity leave starts the day you gave birth, but you can use your vacation days or go on sick leave even for the entire pregnancy and still get paid :) Over here we also have a paid maternity - 100% if you take 6 months and 80% if you take entire year, which is really good for new moms. I worked with both my boys until one week before due date because I was feeling really good. 8 weeks is not a lot of time for parental week and with moving to California - are you getting help with the baby over there? and even in NY :)

As an Australian this is so crazy to hear. You can take up to 1-2 years off here and get maternity/paternity leave. Our health system isn't perfect but there is so much it offers to mums and dads to be, free healthcare, bulk billing, hospital fees waived etc. I hope one day the US will catch on with the many countries that have established this type of system. So much love to you and your bub that's arriving soon, all the best!
