He recorded it in 1984 during the miners' strike, and in between the tracks are little vox-pop recordings that he made during the strike, talking to people on the picket-lines and at strike meetings. Hearing those "archive" recordings from nearly 40 years ago really rubbed in how nothing has changed... In the recordings, you hear people slagging off union leader Arthur Scargill for going around in a big car (Calvert asks them whether they think he should ride a bike to union meetings instead), and people accusing the union leaders of being in the thrall of the Russians. The current batch of Tories tried to plant exactly the same poisonous idea about striking NHS workers: a few months ago in December 2022, since-disgraced Tory tax-dodger and ministerial code breacher Nadhim Zahawi said striking NHS nurses were (quote) "exactly what Putin wants to see.” Listening to Matt in Manchester, it's all the same anti-union lines being trotted out yet again; working-class people's minds poisoned against their own best interests by Tory anti-union propaganda, portraying union leaders as well-paid and therefore insincere and not "down with the common people" (projection, or what?) and trying to claim that strike action makes those dastardly Commies rub their hands in glee. All the same tricks as 40 years ago under Thatcher, basically. But I guess the Tories don't need to get any new tricks when their tried and tested old tricks still work so wonderfully well on the feeble-minded :(

The SNP have now gained 3000 new members since the UK Establishment crown office took over our Scottish Police for Primetime TV viewing. When Sunak was asked in Aberdeen what the Membership figures of the Conservative party were, he refused to answer. You can be sure it is nowhere far from the SNP's current Membership of over 75,000 members! March with us across Scotland on May the 6th and witness the birth of the New Republic of Scotland, better together inside the EU with the Irish Republic protecting us from British/English nationalists out to impose direct rule on Scotland.

The crazy thing is, all the caller has to say is 'i was being a bit hyperbolic saying 'most', obviously health is more important than football' and then the conversation can continue. As a socialist, I'm always accused of "hating rich people" - I don't, what I hate are massive unjustified disparities in wealth and power. I find it very odd when people on the right then turn around and point to the personal wealth of certain individuals on the left, and act as if that is somehow an argument against their position. Same as when people are accused of being 'champaigne socialists.'
@zoranblackie592111 ай бұрын
Amen, I wouldn't describe myself as socialist but wholeheartedly agree - the rhetoric that demonises any one looking to reduce the yawning inequalities as virtue signalling or woke drives me mad... "He's not been in the news for a couple of weeks, so he's weighed things up and decided he'll get back in the news". Actually, he (the whole Train Operating Company side of the union) was in the process of negotiating a deal with the Rail Delivery Group so called off all strike action up until the government yet again added in unacceptable terms to the negotiations, which meant the Union had no choice but to call more strike action.
@garethjenkins6273 Жыл бұрын
It's almost if the Tories don't want to bring a settlement to the dispute. If you didn't know better you would think they wer trying to demonise the rail workers in the eyes of the undecided voters and Tory working class. They will then claim that the Labour Party are complicit in the industrial action and are a bunch of radical left wingers.
