They put ropes between the buildings (mainly from the dorms to the cafeteria - can't let people starve in case the C1 lasts for days, which can happen). We had to make our way back to the dorms from our workplace before the C1 hit full peak and it was like walking inside an eggshell. Truth be told, I did sneak out briefly - in full survival gear - at the peak. Changed my mind real fast. That said, generally the weather folks give enough advanced warning, so everybody stocks up on victuals in their dorm rooms and hopes they get along well enough with their roommate(s) that cabin fever turns causes bloodshed (I'm kidding!)

@revenevan11 Жыл бұрын
Astronauts have gone there for training before! In some ways Antarctica is worse because it is less easy to get home than from low earth orbit. The space station always has enough seats on capsules to return everyone in case of an emergency, even a medical one that they can't handle on station. It might be a bummer for the other people assigned to that capsule to have to go home early just because john got appendicitis though lol. However in antarctica they can send a few more people and more Lbs of equipment than to space, so they have more contingency supplies and additional medical support staff.

Adding to the previous reply with the fact that a lot of people died just trying to get to either of the poles during _summer,_ let alone getting back in one piece. It was a very dangerous process that was often underestimated, mainly because of lack of knowledge and information, and the fact it was easier to get away with sending explorers off to their deaths back then, than it is today.

They need to choose that type of personality for living in confined spaces with others for extended periods so there are no problems. Look at astronauts they are the same, very cheerful people.

Minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit wind chill, 15 minutes outside of a vehicle at a time followed by 15 minutes in heated vehicle OSHA mandate type of work. Big respect for you guys.
