True that that surprised me too. Makes sense the more you think about it though, if it’s that cold outside they’re gonna have a lot of insulation to keep the cold out, and insulation is a sound dampener as well.

There is also the constant roar of the heaters throughout the building that drowns out a lot of those sounds. I spent 6 weeks sleeping with earplugs. In fact, it could have been that very building (there's 4 of them)!

They put ropes between the buildings (mainly from the dorms to the cafeteria - can't let people starve in case the C1 lasts for days, which can happen). We had to make our way back to the dorms from our workplace before the C1 hit full peak and it was like walking inside an eggshell. Truth be told, I did sneak out briefly - in full survival gear - at the peak. Changed my mind real fast. That said, generally the weather folks give enough advanced warning, so everybody stocks up on victuals in their dorm rooms and hopes they get along well enough with their roommate(s) that cabin fever turns causes bloodshed (I'm kidding!)

The thought of being trapped in there during prolonged bad weather and having systems fail like heat, water, etc. has to be just as harrowing as being in space and losing life support in your vessel or station.
@revenevan11
@revenevan11 11 ай бұрын
Astronauts have gone there for training before! In some ways Antarctica is worse because it is less easy to get home than from low earth orbit. The space station always has enough seats on capsules to return everyone in case of an emergency, even a medical one that they can't handle on station. It might be a bummer for the other people assigned to that capsule to have to go home early just because john got appendicitis though lol. However in antarctica they can send a few more people and more Lbs of equipment than to space, so they have more contingency supplies and additional medical support staff.

@@Mateoski97 facts. Not only managers but Its literally the United States Government that be like that. Hell one time one of our supreme court justices sided with a trucking company over a trucker because instead of staying in his broken down truck with no heat in blizzard conditions for 12 hours (most likely he would have died) he went about a mile away, got a hotel room then met the company at the truck when they were able to get to him, which like i said was 12 hours later, they fired him for abandonig his load...... (i be abandoning loads if u know what i mean.... lol) anyway. Yea they fired the guy then wje. He sued them because his choices were follow the rules and die or break the rules and live. The judge's response was I'm not here to decide what is moral or not I'm here to decide what the law is and the law is they terminated you for not following their rules which is allowed regardless of what the consequences.

Adding to the previous reply with the fact that a lot of people died just trying to get to either of the poles during _summer,_ let alone getting back in one piece. It was a very dangerous process that was often underestimated, mainly because of lack of knowledge and information, and the fact it was easier to get away with sending explorers off to their deaths back then, than it is today.

It is kind of a funny feeling if you think about it even further... Like, almost a tiny wish in our heads that hopes for a little more to "survive from". Which is, I guess, why some people like camping. Having to make food with just a little burner or sleeping under the stars in a tent, making campfires the old way... But yeah it is a nice feeling. Your house suddenly "not being just a house", but your own little survival bunker providing all the shelter you need.

The more frightening realisation is that is most people lives, we're just more removed from the danger and live in too much comfort oblivious to all he complicated and temperamental infrastructure giving us the luxury. But as corona panic show us we have about week without fuel, 3 days without food or power and a day without water, before total societal collapse and armed gangs vs resistance survivors as the new civilisation. At least there's no ice bandits out there to worry about there, perhaps they're the safe ones.
