This was an awkward game for me since characters deemed as forgotten by this game such as Horace, Clarabelle and the Phantom Blot are regularly used in Mickey Mouse comics in my country.

I believe the idea was that the version of Horace and Clarabelle in Wasteland were from the original designs and not their (at the time to now) current designs.

My personal headcanon is that the game took place just prior to Mickey getting redesigned. By that point in his history characters like Horace and Clarabelle had been largely phased out of the cartoons.

@@Insert.Oregano Walt Disney created Oswald for Universal back in the 1920's, and they held the rights to the character, not Disney. They wanted to get the rights to the character back, as it was an important part of Walt Disney's legacy, so they agreed to release the sportscaster Al Michaels from his contract so he could go work for NBC Universal in exchange for the trademark to Oswald.

@@Insert.Oregano basically Mickey Mouse wasn't originally Walt Disney's star it was Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. Unfortunately because of copyright Oswald was owned by Universal and Universal pretty much stole many of Walt's animators besides a few who were loyal to Walt. Once that happened on his way back to Los Angeles on the train Walt created a replacement for Oswald a replacement that he would own full copyright to so he created Mortimer Mouse but his wife didn't like the name and suggested to Walt name the character Mickey Mouse and the rest is history.

The reason Minnie wasn't in either of the main games is because Oswald already had a love interest so there was no reason to create an animatronic of her unlike Goofy, Donald and Daisy who were created by the Mad Doctor so Oswald could have close friends like Mickey

Well, you know, the whole morality system thing *was* supposed to have a bigger influence in the gameplay, mainly in Mickey's general appearance, but Disney didn't like the idea of potentially tarnishing Mickey's image and making him look like a bad guy so the thing was partially axed

Epic Mickey 2 actually holds a special place on my heart. I used to play it with my mom all the time, and I have a lot of Oswald Merchandise because he reminds me of her, since that was the character she always played. It really isn't that bad if you do have a co-op friend.

"Clearly this was not meant for the public eyes to see since the final product is nowhere near as menacing." Warren Spector actually clarified that the more infamous concept art was never meant to be in the game at all - it was just to test how far Disney was willing to let his company go. Two pieces of art that WERE meant to be in the game feature an Oswald/Blot fusion called the "Storm Blot," which was the original idea for the final boss in which Oswald was the antagonist. When Spector became the director, this was nixed because he wanted Oswald to be loved again, not hated.

Correction: Storm Blot is just a nickname for the Blot. Not any specific Blot. This was confirmed in Epic Mickey 2 and a tweet by Chase Jones (Director of Epic Mickey)

Yeah, I recall reading about this. I think the artists were encouraged to take things very far, knowing that none of it would pass Disney's approval, and they could essentially just work downwards from there. As you said, everyone involved knew it would never make it to the final game and that it would not have a tone this menacing or dark. I think it's a strategy that ultimately does make sense.

I haven't played epic Mickey in almost a decade and a half since my Wii was lost in storage. I really can't wait to play this remastered it's definitely gonna better than the original.

Take the leaks with a grain of salt, of course; That being said, those do sound like something Purple Lamp would come up with, and the second game already provides a decent template for costumes based on various cartoons from throughout the decades. (Though there's other things that have to be fixed or added; For example, revamping progression.) Edit: Nothing on a sprint option, but the first two are confirmed and they both look awesome to pull off. (Though it's unclear if the dash attack is only a ground option or if it can also be used in the air; The latter would naturally give it more versatility in gameplay.)

Yup, the OG Disney character but Walt Disney didn't know the characters he made were owned by his employer so he made his own company and Mickey. Now his company owns most of the most popular franchises on the planet and strangles the public domain solely to keep hold of Mickey a little longer. In US, the copyright ownership law has been extended so much that companies hold IPs over 70 years after the creator dies. So if you're a fan of something, it's practically illegal to make any fan content until you're almost dead yourself.

I actually played Epic Mickey 1 when I was a kid, and I remember reading the Gamestop review and thinking it was so unfair, lol. Literally the only thing I agreed with was that the camera was pretty bad. I will definitely say that the side quests are super tedious, and what pisses me off the most is that if you don't deal with the side quest right away or do something wrong you can fail your quest permanently, that pissed off my little completionist self.

@@KittyKatty999 For the Disney ruining the public domain thing, look up the show Adam Ruins Everything. It was a show broadcast on American TV and as a sketch on the KZbin channel Collage Humor. Can't remember where it was from a sketch or the show but the episode on it listed its sources so you check the validity yourself. As for the sandblasting thing, it was a story a teacher at my school told me decades ago. I don't know if it's completely true but Disney is aggressive enough with their lawyers that it's believable to me.

If Epic Mickey 3 ever happened, I think that the main villain would've been revealed to be Bootleg Pete from "Alice Comedies." Sure, Oswald might have been Walt's first hero character, but Pete came first, not to mention that a lot of people are probably not aware of Pete originally being a bear. This is kind of approaching fan theory, but perhaps all of the Petes that are in the Wasteland were made by Bootleg Pete, and they serve underneath him to keep on eye on things. Once Mickey arrives and takes care of the both of the games crisis, Bootleg Pete would've set his plan in motion to steal Mickey's heart, humiliate both Mickey and Oswald, and escape back to the real world. Maybe during the final battle, Bootleg Pete manages to summon the Phantom Blot again, perhaps as a last-desperate move after Mickey and Oswald foil his plans. Things either go wrong due to the Phantom Blot betraying him, or he ends up "fusing" with the it to become "Phantom Pete Blot" or something. (which would also be a great way to bring back one of the original plot points for the first game where Oswald fuses with the Phantom Blot, iirc)

That's probably why I never got into Kingdom Hearts, when I heard about it this is the kind of thing I expected, just a giant Disney crossover, but then I learned it was more to the Final Fantasy side of things (a series that I'm not a fan of), with extensive and confusing lore and lots of RPG elements and worlds I didn't really care about, so I never tried to come back to the series. But I mean, that was years ago, maybe I should give it a try now, who knows

As someone who grew up never having a “rebellious” phase, this game was incredible. It was the time period between first playing Kingdom Hearts and saving money to get the second game. I played Epic Mickey so many times that whenever people talk about it, I literally get nostalgia. I loved playing and replaying to get the different endings and to see what paint and thinner does to effect the world. And the fact that getting the full paint ending was harder than thinner really made me think about how good choices don’t always equal easy paths. I remember whenever I got into a new town, depending on the different endings that I was going for, that I would completely destroy the town or completely restore it. I mean, I’m sure if I came back to it years later that I wouldn’t think that it would be as good as it is. But from what I remember, and what I think about it right now, I love this game and I wish that people could see that childlike love that I still have for it. In regards to the sequels, I didn’t pick up the 3ds version because I got my 3ds later in life. And with the sequel, I dropped it pretty quickly. There was a huge difficulty spike with the platforming and I could never get the Oswald AI to work.

It makes me very happy when people post recent videos about Epic Mickey. It is a very nostalgic game for me. The same cannot be said for the sequel. It was such a disappointment that I beat it in less than a day. The only redeeming factor in the sequel is the admittedly cool bosses. But everyone should play the first game if they ever get the chance to do so.

it's very short if you just ignore all the side missions and went straight to the main story route, doing everything ( especially the hero or paint route ) will probably takes a week or 8 hour or so if you're fast.

Man, I loved Epic Mickey despite all its flaws (that camera!). It had so much potential and its concept was actually very clever and oozed Warren Spector's legacy. Who, for me, made the very best action-stealth game of all time (Deus Ex), even to this day. I felt sad when it did not fully execute on its premist and what it actually could - no - should have been.

Looking back, Kingdom Hearts 1 did use the ear effect, and that just makes it more baffling that they did it even once if they weren't going to do it ever again. 0.2 explains how Mickey lost his shirt, but not how his ears were moving at that exact moment.

The Mad Doctor scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. I refused to play the Haunted Manor level, because I knew he was in there. I recently found my old Nintendo Wii Mini, and my copy of Epic Mickey. I had this game when I was little and I loved it. I know it has a lot of missed potential but it introduced me to the world of Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse comics. Mickey used to be an actually funny and well rounded character who felt a full range of emotions in the 1930s. Around this time a Mickey Mouse Comic strip was created for newspapers. Floyd Gottfredson was brought on as a temporary artist for the strips but ended up illustrating the comic untill his death. The strip had a serialized plot and each story arc was even better than the last. They were all well written and had some fantastic art to boot. Each story was gripping and had elements of danger and mystery in them, as well as creating Mouseton and other characters that would influence the Mickey Mouse Comic universe. I would highly recommend buying the Floyd Gottfredson collections from fantagraphics.

I didn’t play much of the first game (never got past Petetronic), but what I saw was incredible. The ruined Small World area was great! But you know what the best part was? The music. Small World’s echoing, clanking sounds and the Clock Tower’s whistling remix of the main theme are amazing!
