1:07 2014 is the 20th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country. Tropical Freeze was intended to be released in November of 2013. I find it ironic that the game's delayed release date worked out better for the celebration scene. Who knows, perhaps the Kongs are really celebrating 20 years of DKC excellence!

Bland!? What idiots would say that? Tropical Freeze is one of the most lush, vibrant, and colorful games ever made. What's so cool to me about DKC in general is how alive the world is, like it has this whole mysterious lore that we'll never know, but can always imagine.

Okay so I think I really can say that I was probably the only one who was excited when this game was announced at E3 last year, and it was great to hear someone rip on that spot about games for saying the levels felt bland. There's opinions and then there's actually playing the game. Great review!

Tropical Freeze was simply fantastic. Definitely one of the best platformers I`ve played in a while. The levels all feel fresh, and full of life, with plenty of fun gimmicks, and cool settings, such as the burning forest, the stormy savannah, and all of the gorgeous areas in world 2. Dixie and Cranky are both very fun to use, and Diddy is still pretty cool as well, even if he is kinda useless here. The bosses are surprisingly really good for a 2D platformer, with most of them having a decent challenge and length, while being fun to fight. The soundtrack is great with many memorable tunes. Honestly, the only complaint I can think of with this game is that the final boss was pretty disappointing, and felt too...basic to me. I think they could have done a lot more with it. Other than that though, it`s a great game, and I found myself liking it more than DKCR as well as probably 3D World. (and let`s be honest, you might as well just trash Mario Bros. U at this point)

@@paulakroy2635 have you seen what the bonus rooms are like in DKC2? they are so much more memorable and challenging, and less repetitive. plus, the bonus rooms in tropical freeze reward you with puzzle pieces. the exact same reward you can just find out in the wild. so they really just feel a lot less special than they should be.

What about the screen crunch from a 4:3 aspect ratio which leads to cheap, unavoidable hits? How about the boring water levels and other mediocre levels mixed in? Could also mention the extremely questionable hitboxes and glitches. Dkc2 is a classic but people are beyond nostalgia biased for it. Tropical Freeze is near perfect. Nearly every stage is a completely new experience with its own theme, its own story, its own music, its own awesome gimmicks and perfect flow and challenge. Tropical Freeze, as a game, has completely usurped the throne as the best DKC game. Only people who would disagree are people who are just too biased to face the facts.

Game critics in these types of groups are always inconsistent and shouldn’t ever have their word taken with more than a grain of salt because you can’t believe any of the garbage they spew out. Like somebody mentioned earlier, you gotta pay to get good rep because these assholes know the power they bring. I agree about the ridiculous complaints people have about the difficulty and the lack of checkpoints. DKC has always been hard and this game is never cheap, and if I remember correctly Returns didn't have any checkpoints in any boss (Even Thugly) either... so what was the problem in this game?

"Some people question why the Bosses don't have check points" WTF? Is it just me, or are gamers nowadays just (no offense) whiny wimps, who can't handle some challenging difficulty? I mean, it's not like it's a "I wanna be the guy" kind of game where you die every few steps if not careful, and neither is it's difficulty in the league of old NES stuff like Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden or the old Mega Man games. Defeating a boss in one go is the very nature of a boss fight, you can either defeat him in that one run or you can't, that's why there is a "more than one life"-system, in case that you fail. You also have multiple occasions to collect 1-ups in the levels and in each boss fight you have two characters, each with two hearts, meaning that you can tank 3 hits and with the 4th hit you die. In the levels, the special abilities of the Kongs often let you escape normally certain death situations. So you really can't say that the game doesn't give you enough chances. The game is indeed quite challenging and it expects that you develop some skill to beat it, but it's difficulty is never cheap and always fair.

I agree. If people think the game is too difficult, then they shouldn't purchase it. If they really want to however then they should be aware that it's hard and ask themselves if they are willing to work for their enjoyement. You can't expect developers to make a product specifically for you. If it's not for you, then it's not for you. If you'd like it to be for you then you better adapt to it.

For a platforming game, most of the bosses take a while. I'd like if there were checkpoints just for the sake of getting things moving. There's always the hard mode or the time attack for playing a boss in one go. In the end though, I don't think it matters much. In terms of the logic of the game, it would make sense because after they've lost, the Kongs float back to the stage using the balloons. So, one could argue that the bosses are being fought again within seconds of the Kongs having just lost, and hence those bosses wouldn't have had time to recover their health.

One place I've found Diddy to be good at is improving on the final boss in Hard Mode, because he doesn't dip back down before going back up. Ideally someone would take Diddy in and switch to Dixie once they are ready.

When the ship starts flying you can see some gigantic folding wings come out so that's how it's flying. Also did you know that in the first silhouette level you can see Samus' ship in the branches in the background. Pretty cool!

Diddy Kong is the fastest underwater. That's his thing. Dixie has the best safety net and aerial mobility, Cranky is the best at maintaining momentum throughout jumps (for speed running on land), and Diddy is the fastest underwater (for speed running in water).

Now that I've recently got a Wii U, this (along with Super Mario 3D World) is one of my most anticipated games for the console. A big part of that hype comes from the fact that DKCR is easily my favorite 2D platformer of all time (keeping in mind that I haven't played every 2D platformer, but I am a big fan of the genre). Nice review. It really does seem like this game kept a lot of the things that made me love the first game so much. And I agree with you about the challenge. I mean, some games can over-do it with the difficulty, and there were certainly times I got frustrated with DKCR, but overall I thought it did a great job of giving us a fair (but strong) challenge that doesn't get in the way of the fun.

One style choice that could've made this look more like the old is harder shadows. Everything looks so evenly lit and part of the originals appeal was the almost noir style lighting. I'd love to see something more tactile looking like the lighting and photoreal texture styles of Little Big Planet incorporated Into this franchise.

CoD 3 is original but only in the zombies mode. The rest of it is pretty much filler content. Which sucks because it’s a full price game with only one map on the only original mode, with the rest of the maps being payed dlc. Regardless DKTF is still far superior in every form imaginable.

I’m just going back to this game, never finished it back in 2014, got to world 5 and threw in the towel, but I’m forcing myself to finish it now. Returns was the first game I ever reserved and got on launch day.. loved it and the difficulty was satisfying. TF though, narrowly straddles the boarder of “that was super satisfying to solve” and “OMFG everything is an instant death trap!” It is for sure a game of skill and memorization. It’s a good thing lives come easy in this game because oh boy.. ya gonna die a lot.

To me the problem with difficulty here is aparent on levels where you use animal pals. They’re clearly designed with you using them in mind and then when you die, you don’t have then anymore. This makes it more reasonable to start from scratch when you die on one of these levels and this just makes me not want to continue in some cases, as obviously these levels usually have the hardest obstacles near their ends.

Maybe its just me but I never found the bosses that hard. I only died 8 times on my first playthrough to the bosses. Once on World 5s boss and 7 on the final boss. I did find World 4's boss Fugu really hard and I admit that I got really lucky beating him first try. I died a lot on Fugu on later playthroughs but I never had trouble with the Owl boss. His attacks are really slow and I knew how to duck to avoid his rushes which no one that I watched knew to try that which surprised me a lot.

Great review. Alpine Incline IS my favorite DKC soundtrack, period. But so many great sound tracks. People wanted a checkpoint for the bosses?? I'll second others who said this game was too easy. I wanted Bramble Scramble to be just as hard, but any level where you have solid footing (where your platform doesn't crumble beneath you) or where you have to time your jumps is just too easy. Personally, I prefer the rocket barrel and mine cart levels where it's one hit you're dead. Two hits takes the fun out of the game. I'd prefer more worlds (6 seems too short), more difficulty, water levels with some more diversity AND if you lose your air bubble in the water you DIE (no freebie hearts) and if possible more 3 dimensional levels, where you use multiple backgrounds instead of just the foreground.

I like how the original DKC trilogy looks like. There were shadows and lots of detail, really went for a realistic look. This tropical freeze is bland with the little shadows and little detail, for a more toddler seseme street look. I really hope they revert back to what Donkey Kong Country really is.

Personally, I like really like this game, and I'd give this game an 8.5/10. My only complaint are the collectibles. To unlock the secret stages, you have to collect ALL 4 Kong pieces and EVERY SINGLE puzzle piece in just one leve! This can be really tedious, as these are either hard to get of difficult to find. On top of that, every stage has a 30 second challenge, where you HAVE to collect a certain amount of bananas in 30 seconds. These mini-games are usually hard to access/find, and if you fail to complete the challenge, you lose a puzzle piece and have to start the entire stage again! And unlike New Super Mario Bros U, which only has a few secret levels to unlock, DK Tropical Freeze has TONS of bonus levels, meaning if you avoid the secret stages, you'll miss out on around 40-50% of the entire game! Other than that, DK Tropical Freeze is great!

Puzzle Pieces don't go towards unlocking the extra levels, and I don't think they go towards the percentage completion as well. They just exist to unlock nifty aesthetic content.
