Also, if youre going to kidnap black people to have on a plantation in the modern era, kidnapping someone in the public eye is... Not smart... At all. It would make more sense (story wise) for it to be a down and out person (i.e homeless, fast food worker) someone who wouldnt really be missed. And imagine the power in a story about a down and put person outsmarting and fighting back against a different system trying to keep them down

I took the modern-day plantation as a metaphor for the ways the black fungibility/slavebility is constantly reconstituted in the present, with I think the most obvious connection being the prison system. It's telling that the people who were kidnapped were political leaders, which is a prominent method through which black liberation movements (and revolutions in general) have been/are squashed by oppressive regimes. So I don't think it's that far-fetched, if exaggerated.

No, "The Forty Year Old Version". It's a new indie film on Netflix, by Radha Blank

Multiple points was it for me but I think the tongue pop, "It.Don't.Compute" and " Oh baaaby" were my top 3

The best part of the movie was Veronica’s style. She had some awesome outfits!

I read Octavia Butler’s book. A very good writer RIP. I even think love craft country series, steals some of Octavia Butlers stories.

Glad you did this review. I won't waste my time on it. Also, with everything that's going on today, I'm glad it didn't show in the theaters!

Yes sister speak on it! It over simplifies and exploits slavery while embracing and propagates tired painful tropes and for what? I don't need this in my life at all and expected more from Janelle Monae. I am here for the politics go off sis. You are fire!!

I agree. I was soooo into the potential of the character that Janelle Monae played as a scholar, wife and mom but the story line and script fell short. (I did clap when she burned them all in that smoker room, though. I also LOVE the actor who played the overseer/kidnapper---not for this role but for others he has played. Awesome talent who was so cliche and dry in this role). I was left scratching my head on why or how the white woman (who was the villain) came to be. What was the real story behind the couple at the beginning? What was their connection to JM? What was the back story of the pregnant girl? There were too many story holes, too much weird casting, and a lackluster script structure. I think if the folks from The Handmaid's Tale or if Quentin Tarantino had this film, it would have been much better.

Yes, reading about this movie only made me want to read Kindred again as well.

i know the movie wasn’t going to be good in the beginning because the first 20 minutes was no character development or plot development it was like we skipped to a random scene in the middle of the movie then all of a sudden we only get one back story that didn’t clarify damn near anything and the end was so underwhelming, there was no climax , no resolution.

This is literally why TV shows are so often way better than movies in certain areas, they have more time to really dive into the characters and the backstory of what the fuck is really happening. It would have maybe worked as a series where it would have started in the modern era, introduced us to the main character and her friends a bit and gone from there. But nah. It just kinda felt like a TV movie to me. Which is why in other news, Lovecraft Country works so well because it's not a movie but a TV series.

I really enjoyed your review. You are clearly very intelligent. I will be watching more of your reviews. I will not be watching Antebellum. I have seen multiple negative reviews. Yours was the most comprehensive. Thank you.

An interesting tidbit....first off, I don’t know if Janelle Monae and the author of a book called “ Promised Land” made the movie together....BUT the movie is EXACTLY like book & it came out in 2017 I believe... I’ve tried to research this but nothing comes up....hmmmm...great review as always!

I love Kindred! And when I saw the preview of Antebellum, I totally thought it was biting off of it. As much as I love Janelle Monae, something was telling me I was NOT going to want to see this. You have now confirmed this for me.

I’m mad that the trailers made it seem like she went back in time but was aware of like she was a “transplant”. Even though I didn’t see the film but read the entire synopsis, I could tell that it wasn’t executed well. Screen Writers don’t world build anymore
