The most annoying part of this whole situation is how Joe Biden as a white man literally has now received the biggest achievement of his political career on the backs of a black man and black woman. He got the democratic party nomination becuase of his ties with Obama after doing the bare minimum with his campaign and now his campaign has pretty much been resurrected from the dead with excitement over him choosing a black woman as his running mate . A black woman who is dynamic and electrifying in a ll the ways he is not and will no doubt energise many people to go vote for him. All of this after having a questionable and problematic history with the black community in the earlier parts of his career. This shit is crazy. I just realise someone said this in the video. Been saying this for months! Biden took "I have black friends" to a whole other level

I feel like there was the discussion from Remember The Titans where they told the white coach to hold off because they needed a black coach for optics. The democrats needed to be seen as “diverse” and had a biracial man, white woman and went back to the typical white man presidential hopeful. And he’s older. Why do black people and the media love to erase Kamala's Indian heritage applying the one drop rule? Yall got Indians Americans hot. Kamala is Jamaican/Indian biracial. Not only that she's anchored in her upper caste Brahmin Indian side. I don't need point out the terrible caste system there and it's affects on the dalit. But wasn't she sworn in as Indian as a senator (because it's popular in California). If you look at her politics/policies through that lens, it make sense. She ain't and never been for the black community or the poor. Another corporate Democrat. Sadly... Still better than the other side but I'm not cheering like this is somehow a win for American descendants of slavery who are steeped in that lineage.

@@hailleification Well if one wants to be very technical about it Indian isn't a race either - it's a nationality. Her mother was Tamil so she's Dravidian but that's not a race either. This is where the whole idea of race as a biological thing gets especially nonsensical. It's a social construct, which makes it real, but at the same time it isn't.

Toking Talk EDU White people, particularly those middle aged and older. They make up the majority in this country and are the ones to most likely vote in these types of elections. Most of them have been comfortable with a straight, rich, white man in power. If anything deviates from that, it makes them uncomfortable. I think it’s important to engage with young people and find a way to encourage them to vote. The problem is (a point that was brought up by the third young lady) that young people continuously get discouraged after every election because the person they wanted or the ideal person they wanted wasn’t chosen. Here’s the problem with this line of thinking: there’s no such thing as a perfect candidate. There will never be a candidate that will be 100% on your side. It’s not possible, but that doesn’t mean we should give up. We have to play the game. We have to vote, but not just the presidency. We have to vote for our mayors, governors, senators, judges, county commissioners, etc. And we have to vote for those who represent us and our community the best. With each election, there always seems to be more POC, women, LGBTQ people, and progressives and that what we need. People who represent this country’s population and does some good for their community. The other thing is we need to get rid of voter suppression. This problem can go away in some areas if people stop voting for those who are for it (like in Florida), but that requires people to use their brains and have empathy.

When I heard she was the VP I literally didn’t feel anything. I don’t care for this woman tbh. I just hope people don’t put her (and Biden) on an infallible pedestal just because her being there is a milestone. I know this is significant but at the end of the day just her being a person of color isn’t going to get this country where it needs to be, policy gets us where we need to be. I don’t want the mystique of having a Black woman VP to curb our focus. We need to hold them accountable just as much as any other politician. They’re still part of the establishment. Honestly I was more hyped for Cori Bush’s victory in Missouri than this.

I think this is the opinion of most young ppl. We just aren't fooled by this, and want to see real progress and real change. Identity politics is not the end-all-be-all that mainstream media is trying to force us to believe. This is true but I think the reasoning behind it is more complex than people think it is. There are socio-economic reasons for why light skin or biracial people were usually the "firsts". Many of these people came from families that had some money so they had more clout or power. They had more schooling and resources. This is no different than today regardless of race.

Or even Karen Bass; I think ageism may have played a part in that 1 as well. Their names may not have the resounding popularity of KH but they are just as good and qualified. But in the end Joe needs her because to stand up against 45, you can't be a pushover and I don't know how assertive those women are under pressure. Now why might KH be as popular and palatable amongst the majority? It could be said that it's because her policies are good, it could be the fact that she's married to a white man, or it could be she goes along and bumps elbows with the right folks. But Again, let's not act like that the lighter skin is more palatable for the "majority". Yes, she still had to face those scrutinies of being a black woman but she very well could have had it slightly easier than her darker counterparts. I am not saying that that is fact but it is for damn sure and has been a truthful reality. Do you think BO would have became president if he was the same complexion as Sidney Poitier? My concern is that while I agree there are marked differences between Biden/Harris and the Trump/Pence administration and I think harm reduction is vital...at what point do we move beyond stemming the bleeding and move towards healing the wounds and stopping the injuries from happening in the first place? Does our concession to the lesser of two evils time and time again allow this system of constant appeasing the right to continue? I've been hesitant to vocalise these concerns because I don't live in the states anymore so my advocacy and votes are going to impact people in a worse situation than I am but I feel like Charlie Brown kicking the football.

I personally believe that you need to put people in the executive position that are willing to bend with pressure and then you need to stack the House and Senate with progressives. To much worrying about how we move the President. If you have a Progressive Congress, they will move the executive branch well enough. How do we do it? Do what the Republicans have done over the past 10 years. Stack the state legislatures and governorship with progressives. Consolidate power there and then move up. I think her point was America doesnt owe her reparations. Listen all black people across the world except Ethiopians/Abyssinia are owed reparations from someone. England being the biggest colonizer owes a lot of people- Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Kenya etc. because their labour in the country added to England's wealth (I mean they boasted all the time that the sun never sets in the British empire- showing how many colonies they owned). France is another one that owes reparations to a lot of countries. I think certain countries will benefit two fold cause they are entitled to reparations from the wealthy white families in their country & a European colonizer because they contributed to both wealth pockets. I believe Canada & South Africa are at least two of those countries.

do we realise Trump did not have any experience in politics? he was a business man. i think its alarming that we are going to just vote for someone just because of their resume or ethnicity/ colour skin. Some people with no or little experience can change a lot in government, AOC is young aware and justice driven, but with little experience if she wanted to run. this is a hopeless subject and unfair.

AOC is too young to legally run. By the time she's old enough she'll have quite a bit of experience. Also when you're running a government knowing how it works and what is and isn't legal is important. I would say that a resume a record of what you've done with your elected position is also important.

I do wish that we would see more ADOS people at the executive branch though! I think that’s just as important as seeing black people (biracial people included) in the executive branch in general. Don’t complain about the “oppressors” when they don’t even bother to hide the roadmap to get to where they are. It’s all laid out for you, you just need to be willing to search for it. I’ve watched the most unqualified people run for offices they shouldn’t even be considered for. Why? Because they can and they understand the how things work. Kamala has zero investment in the community of color (especially Black people) as a former AG and now as Senator. I have very little expectation of her as it is. Also, I knew Stacy Abrams wasn't gonna be chosen, not because of her lack of experience. There is a lot of truth to the fact that progressives need to work on their down ballot options. Moderates in the democratic party are still the majority of representatives in congress -- so it isn't surprising that those on top of the ticket match that demographic. Democrats as a whole and the country as a whole isn't there to do anything more exciting until that changes. It's not that voting doesn't work or people at the top don't listen -- its that they are listening to the voices of the "majority who vote" right now, and those aren't progressive. That needs to change first -- it is changing incrementally, but it is not going to change in one election.

Soul Glow what IS going to benefit us is building a grass roots movement focusing on racial and economic issues. There are only 2 solutions. Either we have a seat at the table with the party that is NOT actively trying to lynch us (the Democratic Party) or we create our own party. The former is somewhat happening although it’s going to take a lot of push and persistence to get any meaningful change (think AOC or ILan Omar etc). Or we can go the way of Jessie Jackson and try to build our own party. Building our own party is a lot harder. However, given that the Republican Party might self destruct, it might make it easier.
