Yeah and it's all a matter of perspective. To us, someone like Carl might be pathetic, but if you asked a more intelligent being...? We're on the same level as Carl, or maybe even a termite. Hell, a really intelligent being might not even see human intelligence as a benefit. Maybe a termite or ant would be preferable to them, at least they have a well defined roles and clear goals. While humans are truly too pathetic to explore the cosmos, but also too intelligent to not have a constant existential crisis about how pointless the average human existence is.
