Anterior Hip Replacement Patient - 3 Days Post Op

One of the reasons the anterior hip replacement is better for patients is the speed of recovery. Here is a patient walking at his home only THREE days after a left total hip replacement through an anterior surgical approach. He walks remarkably well without his cane. He went home a few hours after surgery and had a home-cooked dinner at his house the same day of surgery. He recovered quickly from his hip replacement and feels dramatically better than before the operation.
If you are having hip pain, schedule a consultation and we can discuss your options.

Everyone heals differently and manages pain differently. I had total hip replacement surgery on February 1st 2024. I walked with a walker out of the hospital 7 hours after my surgery. On February 3rd I stopped pain medications as my pain wasn’t that bad. On February 4th my Physical Therapist gave me the go-ahead to walk with a cane. The next day I was walking without the assistance of a cane. I’m 22 days post surgery and my walking is normal and without any assistance from a cane and without any pain to note. For me sleeping has been the biggest challenge as I don’t usually sleep on my back and I had discomfort from the compression socks I was instructed to wear. Also, numbness around the incision is kinda annoying but it’s getting better by the day. Good luck to anyone else going through this and my only tips would be follow your surgeon’s instructions to a tee and ask questions if you’re uncertain about anything.

@@rjb7569 I had Anterior hip replacement of my right hip on February 1st 2024. I’m 85 days post surgery and besides having issues sleeping the first week or so after surgery, I’ve had no issues. My leg never bruised up at all and my incision healed without issues. I’m now walking 2 to 4 miles every other day and ride my mountain bike 6 to 8 miles on days I don’t walk. I actually cut my grass last week!! The only advice I can offer is follow your surgeon’s and discharge instructions to a tee and don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re unsure of anything. Good luck with your surgery.

@@TruthAboveAll08 actually not so good. The surgeon is recommending a second surgery to release the psoas tendon which is causing me pain every time I lift up my leg (to get in and out of car, put jeans on etc). It’s a rare post op issue but one I have sadly.

I had mine done April 4. Four days after surgery I could almost walk like that. A week after surgery it hurt like crazy when I'd put weight on it. I could drive in 3 weeks but didn't much because of lack of mobility once I got there. Now - 6 weeks post - I finally ditched my cane and am walking again. Was it fun? Nope. Was it as bad as I thought it would be? Nope. I had almost NO post surgical pain - only weight bearing pain. I never even took a pain pill. After limping around for 2 years it is a huge relief to be able to walk normally again. The temporary discomfort was an equitable trade for being able to walk again.

@@thunker4603 my story is turning out to be like yours, I’m 33 days off the operating table and I don’t beed a pain pill, or a cane any more, I actually drove myself home after the three day stay after surgery. And yes right after surgery was the trying time, of discomfort and immobility and I just rode that out basically into days eight and nine and I was feeling fine. , I avoided the surgery for 5 years and yes I am now feeling like I know I made the best decision.

@weirdthomas-mt5rn You're right. I was merely pointing out that his experience, a bad one, doesn't make EXCELLENT results for others B.S. At two years, what he describes for himself unacceptable. I would hope that he explores the possible explanations for this. There are several, from a bad surgery process to defective replacement units, to poor follow-up PT, etc. Push, and get answers. I'm very sorry that he's experiencing such negative results and hope he finds out why. HIS EXPERIENCE IS ATYPICAL, AND UNACCEPTABLE. I'm now almost four months post-surgery. After months of excruciating pain, instability, and basic immobility, I am now pain-free 98% of the time, with the only exception being when I sleep at night on my right side and after a few hours it becomes uncomfortable. I am experiencing about 75% full mobility and range of motion, and steady improvement in all aspects. Six months is the general time frame for full recovery. In two more months, I have no idea what the full picture will be. I did have to stop PT in November, because prior problems with my other leg were actually making further progress near impossible. I just completed HA Gel injections in that knee, the primary problem. I see a surgeon in January regarding damaged tendons. So these issues DO affect my long-term recovery. We shall see. But at this point, if there is no more significant improvement, I'm extremely comfortable with the outcome.

Sure his leg isn't even swollen. Lol I'm 12 weeks and my back gets tired out walking so I still need a stick or crutch intermittently. I heard it takes 6 months to a year to get back to normal. The anterior approach is excellent. My left leg was lateral approach and my right leg was anterior. The anterior incision was much smaller and I was allowed to do much more post surgery without risk of dislocation. I was allowed to drive after 6 weeks while with lateral it was 8 weeks. I never needed crutches after anterior - just a single stick like the man in this video.

This is not typical! I had a total hip replacement 2 and a half weeks ago, I’m still limping and walking with a cane. Of course it’s getting better every day, but I’d expect to see this more at the month and a half mark, not 2 or 3 days post op. This is almost laughable and they really shouldn’t put stuff like this out here for people to have these expectations!

I agree. I don't understand how that is possible. I'm just 12 weeks post operative and I don't use a crutch in the house but I need to bring it when I walk the dog. I use it intermittently as my back gets tired. Sure your leg is hugely swollen for about 5 weeks. Also you have to wear compression stockings for six weeks. I can't understand how anybody could walk without a crutch after a few days. Also I had five sessions of physio and everyone in the group of five were similar to myself.

This because he had an anterior hip replacement. Its a smaller cut and incision is in a slightly different place. Ive seen a similar video. My first hip rep was 12 years ago and i had a 11 inch scar. I walked without aids at 5 weeks. This time im 12 weeks post op and although I dont use a stick i have a limp. It was a big operation as my the surgeon told me the bone in that area was totally destroyed. I have a 16" scar this time! Im very disappointed and getting physio to help this. I can't weight bear on one leg on the operated side as the area round the groin, & going towards my bum feels heavy and painful. Id taken a bad infection on week 2 (not in my hip) and was ill for two weeks so wasnt doing my exercises or eating properly and i think this set me right back. Im scared that ill be left with this limp for life. Im a young 70 and still a lot to do in my life. Im hoping to get back to my job of caring for the elderly in their homes. I only do caring two days a week but love it. So waiting for the physiotherapists to clear me fit for work. 🤞🤞🤞

Still need it though sometimes for my bad balance. This is due to sudden permanent deafness in one ear. Also suffer Tinnitus.
