Best thing to buy before surgery is a reacher grabber tool from a hardware store or online. You end up dropping a lot of things and this tool saves the day.

The docs are Right! My hip got so bad the doctor said I was essentially walking on a broken hip. I waited too long & spent several years sitting on my couch, losing all my athleticism and strength. I felt pretty lousy for several weeks post op, mostly because of reaction to anesthesia and pain meds. Once reduced to over-the-counter pain meds and PT, things got MUCH better. 11 months post op, I’ve joined a gym & am working with a personal trainer - I wish I had joined as soon as PT was finished! The new hip is pain free & I’m still building strength. New lease on life! Exercise is KEY! Find a way that works for you! I believe I’ve paid a heavy price for waiting too long - the pandemic and caring for a dying sibling contributed.

I had a hip replacement at 60. I now go dancing to techno at least twice a week as I did all my exercises religiously after surgery. I know a guy who is younger than me who still uses a walker years later as he didn't do anything post surgery. Do your exercises people even though it's literally a pain.

Especially when you get to pain in the non-operated leg, because your doctor can't admit that your new hip made that leg longer by an inch. So doing all my exercises for the operated leg has put stress on my unoperated leg, which now I need a attachment to the bottom of my shoe for that leg

Hip replacement October 2020. In addition to all your great tips, I also made sure to have an elevated toilet seat and a shower chair for when I could take the shower. The other thing that was set up in recovery was a meal train for the first 2 weeks. It was so helpful to not have to worry about meals during that time. I also premade some breakfast items that were grab and go easy.

I just had my hip replacement surgery on 5/7/24. First and foremost, thank you both so much for making these videos! You don't know how invaluable the advice is coming from medical professionals like yourselves. Below are a couple of points that I've taken away from my surgery. 1. Buy a wedge pillow. For the first couple days, your pain will definitely be elevated. Having this wedge pillow under my legs while in bed reduced the pain by a significant margin. It's worth the investment. 2. Buy a grabber and sock assistant. Remember, you don't just need to put clothes and socks on. You also need to take them off. Getting clothes off and on on the surgery side can really be a chore. As can doing simple movements suck as reaching for things. 3. Have a meal plan if you live by yourself. Or put some money aside for a couple of days' worth of delivery. 4. You WILL start feeling better. Just be patient. You lived with your hip pain for a while prior to surgery. Waiting a couple more weeks is nothing! 5. Buy a portable toilet or portable urinal. Getting up takes time and you making it to the bathroom may be a race against time. It's just good to have around just in case!

I also had my surgery on 5/7/24 and am 62 and in good health. The one thing that I did not anticipate is the amount of knee pain associated with a hip replacement. As explained by my surgeon, the amount of rotational torque put on the knee during hip replacement (required for proper implant placement) REALLLLLYYY stretches ligaments and tendons in the knee area. Hip pain 7 days after surgery was a 1 while knee pain 7 days after surgery is about 5-6. Only treament is rest, ice, elevation, and compression. Now 14 days post surgery, knee pain is finally subsiding but my advice for others is to stay on top of the pain any way you can. Lots and lots of ice packs, NSAIDS, and my knee is elevated as often as practical.

I had a total hip replacement (right hip) in July 2022 at age 50. Did a ton of prehab, particularly bike riding and went into the op fit and strong which helped immensely with post op recovery. Biggest advice from my experience is not to try to do too much too soon post op. I got back on a bike and even back on a squash court weeks after surgery, which was fine in moderation and without pushing too hard. I played a squash tournament in November 2022 and in hindsight that was a dumb move as it actually set my recovery back. I then had a bad accident on a mountain bike in July 2023 (broken ribs and some internal injuries in upper body) and this was a bit of a blessing in disguise as it laid me up for weeks and I had to return to exercise and full activity really gradually so my hip had the rest it needed to heal more efficiently. By November 2023 it was feeling the best it has in years. In my experience it takes a good 12 to 18 months for the muscles to recover properly from the op no matter how much you want it to be quicker than that.

My first hip replacement was in June of 2016. I lost my job so I didn't have insurance and that caused me to put it off for a long time. Long story short, my surgeon told me if I had waited any longer, I could have lost my leg due to the damage. I had no Cartledge and numerous fractures in the joint and surrounding area. My recovery was brutal but after, I was able to walk again and above all, no more severe pain. Anyone that needs a hip replacement: DON'T put it off, get it done and over with!!!! Btw, my other hip replacement (2018) was easier and my recovery was easier. I also didn't wait until I could no longer walk. I really hate arthritis!

My surgeon said hip replacement is the only joint that the patient has less pain after the surgery. Don’t forget if you are sitting, your hip is already at 90 degrees! No bending toward the floor while you’re sitting! Anterior approach is wonderful! I walked in to surgery at 6:45 and walked out with a walker at 3:15! 7 days if P.T. And done!

I had this surgery last May. I excercised by riding my stationary bike daily right up to the day of surgery. But exercising after the surgery was not so smooth. I wish doctors and their staffs would let people know that your muscles have to reset - after this surgery. My muscles had adapted to a bad hip and had to adapt to a new, good one. It takes time.

I had a preexisting condition that impacted the musculature on the side of my hip replacement. I made sure I showed the surgeon as well as the surgical PA how I stood up so they would understand my unique situation. They paid little to no attention, and did a "routine" procedure on the OR table and now I cannot stand up. When a patient tells you there is something important you should know, LISTEN.

Can I add a "to do" to your "to don't" list? Use a walker instead of a cane. A pre-op physical therapist mentioned that the people he sees who used a cane walk with a rocking motion with the cane, and still have that motion six months later without the cane. I really didn't need either but I used the walker in my house like training wheels, practicing a normal stride to help eliminate the limp I'd had for a couple of years. So mostly without, but used deliberately at other times. It's also very handy in the middle of the night to get to the toilet without falling or tripping over a snoozing dog.

Hip replacement last October 24. Anterior is the way to go! Only needed Tylenol a couple times. Virtually no pain! Only felt stiff and sore. Until I broke it 4 days later. I felt so good, like I hadn't even had it done. Without even giving it a second thought I picked up and moved a heavy wood dining chair in a twisting motion. Felt it bad and heard the snap. I just broke a piece off and decided not to go back in for surgery since it was right on the spot to go into surgery again or not. Floater now. Lol. Healed great, so happy I did a replacement, no more pain!😊 Careful, don't mmy mistake. Set me back about 3 weeks.

I had both hips replaced in 2009, one month after the other, then I had to have the second one revised within a month. After the revision I was in the bathroom to brush my teeth, lost my balance, and in preventing a fall my legs crossed and I dislocated! Ambulance ride to the hospital, they "pulled" on my leg and put the joint back in place. They sent me home. While in the ER they had me hooked up to an IV in case surgery was needed, so when I got home I really had to void! As I began to sit down (ADA HEIGHT TOILET) I felt a pop and stood straight up! I got another ambulance ride to the hospital! This time I requested a catheterization because my bladder was distended from all the fluids (they had hung 2 bags earlier and started another the second arrival) and they cathed me (self preservation for the doc😂) and again fixed my hip in place. This time I was admitted for 3 days. To add insult to injury I was fitted with a very cumbersome brace which didn't fit well and was "only a reminder" to be careful, AND my medical insurance denied the second ambulance ride and ER visit saying it was a duplicate. I called and told them to look at the time stamps, and explained my adventures. I got an embarrassed apology and the bill was paid pronto. So, it can happen in the least expected movements once the area is weakened. I love watching your videos. I describe myself as a relatively healthy fat chick with bad bones, so most of my issues at age 70 have been orthopedic.

My GP recommended a hip replacement, but I declined,as I wanted to see if it would get worse. I am grateful that the hip has been stable for ~ 8 years. This video is good advice, discussing some things I hadn't considered if I had to have a replacement. I hope surgeons discuss this with their patients before surgery.

I had a good experience with my hip replacement in 2018 at OTMH. The pre-op clinic where they taught me how to do stairs, told me what I should buy and informed me of what to expect - it was invaluable. The team was excellent and a lot of my concerns were greatly diminished by the time I had the surgery. I recommend being as informed as possible prior to surgery and also buying more than one grabber. I kept dropping my grabber and needed a second one to pick it up! I also practiced doing stairs and dressing myself with the grabber before surgery and I felt more confident as a result. My husband attended the pre-op class with me and took great care of me after surgery. Having your loved ones know the risks is very helpful. My recovery went very smoothly and I’m grateful for everyone involved.

I had a THR at age 45 due to congenital hip dysplasia. I am now 62. I did end up with the operative leg being about 2 cm longer than my other leg, so I require a lift on the non-surgical side. I was massively disappointed, but still am grateful to have my mobility back. I followed all the post-op rules and did my physio. I worked very hard so that I would not have a limp. Aside from everything the surgeons have advised in this video, I would advise maintaining an exercise program to regain the strength you lost in the affected leg before surgery, and to maintain strength and flexibility as you age with the artificial joint. My hip joint is very stable. I weight train, cycle and ride my horse (my surgeon advised me to wait 7 months before riding, which I did). 😊

-Long handled scrubber for showering -Multiple reachers, I put one in my bedroom, one in the bathroom and one by the couch. -Walker, it allows smoother movement in the joint. (I have to have crutches in my house bcs I have narrow doorways.) -Multiple small garbage cans or bags hanging off dressers knobs. -Wedge pillow and several other pillows to put under legs. It keeps them from swelling. But lay without them sometimes during the day to let the hip flexor relax. -Raised toilet seat unless you have a tall toilet. I’m 5’1” and have a 3.5 inch one bcs our toilets are to small. -Commode if you don’t have a toilet on the floor you sleep or the front room/sitting room is located. -I have a folding table and a seat with a footstool in my room to eat the first two-three weeks. -A wide shower chair to transfer easier. An exercise strap to lift the leg up to get into bed/shower. -I used command hooks to hang my crutches and reachers on. I just had my second hip replacement 3 weeks ago. The first I had 4 months ago. I’ve had a lot of practice 😊 When the hospital tells you someone should be with you 24 hours. You need 2-4 weeks of help. Mine is longer bcs both my hips were really bad. Be patient with yourself. Both my hips are different and have taken different times to heal!!! Check with your surgeon about pain medicine, instructions bcs the hospital and surgeon instructions will be different!!! And remember many people giving you instructions have never had a hip replaced. They don’t know what it feels like!!! Your having your bone cut/broken and mettle screwed and pushed into places it shouldn’t be. Your body needs time to adjust!!!!! Don’t do to much bcs the bone needs time to grow into the replacement. I moved to much the first time and ended up making my leg hurt a lot. Last walk, walk, walk properly. It helps move the joint making it stronger. BUT don’t over do it. The pain shouldn’t be more than a 4,5, and move once an hour. I have my alarm set for every 50 minutes throughout the day. Hope these help!!!!

I didn’t take any medication for pain. I did take anti inflammatory and blood thinners for a few weeks. I did rehab for three weeks maybe. I returned to work after 7 weeks. I've made tremendous progress (although I was athletic to begin with and did lots of prehab, which it seems lots of surgeons ignore). I was on oxy, and I felt nauseous for two weeks post-surgery, but I would take it again in a heartbeat b/c it allows you to do the movement you need to do. I took 12 weeks off of work, and I'm glad I did. You might start the day feeling great, walking a mile or more, being active, and then: Pow. Exhaustion sets in. As the docs say, respect what your poor body has been through. It needs a LOT to heal. Thanks for these great videos Talking with Docs--I'm a devoted fan!

This is - he said as a patient not a doctor - is dependent on several factors. The most important is to listen to your doctor. Because the approach your doctor uses (posterior, "mid", anterior) affects the likelihood of this being a problem. As is the type of prosthetic they used, the condition of your hip, and so on. My physical therapist worked with me to achieve better than 90 degrees, but that was under the advice of my surgeon.

I am gathering info for my recently widowed neighbour, he has hip pain already and expects to need a new hip. You two docs 🇨🇦 are terrific in clearly explaining things. My grandpa had a new hip (before titanium) in 1973 at TGH in Toronto with Dr Cameron … he ‘willed’ his hip back to U of T for research when he passed in 1988. I have copied your link to pass to my neighbour. THX!

Mistake I made was not to stay overnight after my hip surgery ( which 2 years later was a great decision !). I felt hustled out of the day surgery situation, got home used a walker out of the car & immediately fell to my knees. Thank god only bruised. My husband & a neighbor picked me up & put me on the couch ! If I ever have to do this again it will be on an overnight basis. Fair warning to all -

One of the best things that happened after my hip replacement was the Dr ordered me to start walking the first day after surgery. I was to put weight on the hip and walk with a walker. And I did walk and it really helped me not to fear any negative reactions. This was in 2016 and I’m still doing well at 79, thanks for you great information !

After my THR the pain clinic would only give me Tramadol. Its for mild to moderate pain. I was so angry with them. Doctors are not allowed to prescribe pain meds. Except while you are in the hospital under their care. My surgeon was top notch and gave me back 20 years of my life. But I did find a different pain clinic for any future needs. 😊

I always remember typing up a ward round and a patient came in after a fall and broke her hip. She was operated not sure if it was cemented or a poly but she had dementia and forgot about the operation and got out the bed the next day and re-fractured :(. revision surgery the next day. Majority of people are always delighted with their THR, but lesser so with a TKR. Socks and shoes is another one after surgery some can never really put socks on again. Physio is key. x

"Majority of people are always delighted with their THR" My 56-year old sister and her elective THR are in the minority then! Neither she or her widowed husband and the rest of her family were "delighted" with her death approx. 12-hrs. after being released from the hospital. The educated guess is probably a DVT/PE took her life. No postmortem was performed, so we will never know. Facing a woefully overdo THR for both hips, my surgical roulette day is scheduled. Hopefully, I will survive to fight another day.

Hi Doc’s ,I had my first total hip replacement in 2018 took an infection in 2019 had an op to take out the new hip and clean out the space but the infection was still there so the opened me up again and put in a spacer with antibiotic I had that in for 8 wks and I could not walk with it plus they cracked a bone when doing it . Then when the infection was away they put in another new hip , I can’t lie on the side since and now my other hip needs done but I am too scared to get it done because the Anesthetiser hit a nerve in my back and I jumped I really felt it and since then I can’t stand or walk for any length of time as the pain in my back is a burning stabbing sensation 😢 I think he damaged a nerve 😫 p.s could you reply to this comment if you think it is nerve damage in my back and the reason for my pain ,please doc’s 😔

Still unable to put full weight down on operated hip without pain, hence the aid with a cane. Have had pain down the buttock radiating down the hip and leg since surgery. I’m no Doctor but it feels like the pain is radiating from sciatic nerve. Having an MRI on the 26th.

I was dropped the night of surgery by 1 nurse doing an unsafe transfer. Broke all the rules. No knee immobilizer on. Gait belt under my arms. No help. He had me standing on 1 leg, operative leg still numb from block anesthesia. He looked over his right shoulder and pulled me with him. My operative leg was just hanging from my torso. I fell forward onto that knee. I could not feel it when i landed on it but i heard it. I yelled for the stat portable xray. I was also the only one yelling for help pre transfer as unsafe and as we were going down. The femur fracture you spoke of. Yep. Redo the next afternoon. Hospital 1 week. Rehab facility 4 weeks. Hospital bed in the living room and commode in the kitchen for over 1 year. Non weight bearing for weeks and weeks. Learn to walk again at least twice. No feeling in that knee. It will be 3 YEARS in May. No feeling. Still going to p.t. Nothing happened to the nurse. Only me and my life. 2 related surgeries since the fall. A 3rd this past December. I am grateful to my incredible surgeon. Most appreciative for the best physical therapist in the world. Yes. I said that. What i have been through and recovered from, it was with this fantastically amazing physical therapist. I would mention her name but she and all of her patients know who she is. Not to forget God, my constant companion every day. Thanks to my husband of like almost 40 years. Yikes! 🎉 TIP : Keep someone with you at the hospital. Overnight. Bless you all. Amen. 🙏

On October 25th 2023 I had my right hip replacement done the original way. I started exercising b4 May n it made all the difference! Takes longer to heal but i am doing great now. ❤ My hospital doesn't do anterior. Now in March 2024 I am doing laps in olympic size pool, losing weight, exercising and walking outdoors. Next hip is October 2024! I sometimes still take the walker on long walks so if i tire, I sit a couple of minutes n keep going. Today I went for a walk with my father in law NO walker😊

In the 21st century a Total Hip Replacement should only be performed using the Direct Anterior Approach. The anterior approach is more technically demanding for the surgeon, which is why many surgeons have not yet switched to this approach. This approach is considered a minimally invasive surgery to replace the damaged hip while avoiding nearby muscles and tendons. This approach causes less pain and results in a quicker recovery. There are generally no hip precautions necessary after the direct anterior approach, so motion is not restricted. Patients can return to work when they feel comfortable. This typically takes about 2 weeks. As a 75 year old male and an engineer in the power industry, the surgery was performed as an outpatient and I was home that evening on January 9, 2024. Used a walker for the first two days and then a cane for the following two weeks mostly for protection from falling and to relearn how to walk without a limp. Was active and back to work the following week and playing pickleball at 8 weeks. Was cleared from physical therapy after 4 sessions. Was already doing the exercises and riding my stationary bicycle before the sessions with the physical therapist. My biggest recommendation is to do at least 2 or 3 times a day the associated physical therapy exercises for several weeks prior to the surgery and for at least 8 weeks post surgery or in my case until I got back to my normal fitness activities. The ankle pump exercise should be performed even more frequently. I still do them frequently throughout the day. Also ice pack pads will be your post surgery friend; they should be used frequently on the area of the incision for the first 2 weeks after surgery.

Just had a posterior done five days ago and walking without a cane. Much less possible issues like nerve damage for example. So giving your "opinion" as definitive fact is not helpful. Outpatient surgery from a skilled doctor. never even had to use pain meds. So your anterior only OPINION is just that.

Hi Docs, I really appreciate your videos. I had a hip replacement 6 mo ago ( followed by a double fusion a few months later) and am doing well. Also, I am a rehab RN. I just wanted to point out that the graphic that you included with the patient doing a "bird dog" exercise is all wrong for a hip replacement. It is a back exercise. I don't think you really want to encourage a new hip patient to get down on the floor. Jane

Docs, in addition to the osteoarthritis in my right hip, I've come to learn, via MRI, that I've a slight bulge in my L1 through 5, with the real bulges in 1&2. These are slight and not contacting a nerve and the spinal canal isn't impacted. My physio has informed me that, possibly, the osteoarthritis in my right hip might be placing the strain on my lumbars (something evidenced by the MRI because said bulges/tears are more on the right side). I've, also, been informed by my doctor that I might be able to have a hip replacement (still waiting on the x-rays). Docs, is it possible that by replacing the osteoarthritic hip I might reduce the compression in my lumbars ergo helping correct/possibly reverse the lumbar bulges? Best! J

The replacements are for life--make the best you can out of it so that you have the best movement possible for all the years you have ahead of you----it's more than worth the work. Your surgeon did the best they could for you----do that for yourself as well.
