Thank you so much for doing this interview. I was doing mission work in Inanda , Natal at the end of the 80's It was tough, violent and unsettling. I have just read "People's War" and cried. Anthea, you filled in the missing pieces for me. Alec , it would be helpful and give greater clarity to what is happening in South Africa if you could use the term ANC- SACP instead of just ANC when refering to the government. A crash in the stock or real estate markets has less of an immediate impact on people's standard of living than inflation or currency devaluation. That the market is so negative at the moment shouldn't be shocking. If we are to survive in this economy, we need assistance right away. The ETF and stock markets are still quite volatile, just like the property market. Now all that's left of my $370K portfolio is ruins.

There’s a dangerous assumption that the majority voters are opposed to the NDR. I am afraid that they may not necessarily be, even the group of disgruntled ANC voters who punished it in 2019. This country is extremely polarized and to assume that arguments about a decimated economy will sober up many, is naivety. The rush to the bottom will continue past 2024 elections.

She presents a weak argument to say the least. One that appeals to a certain disproportionately privileged fraction (compared to the average South African) of society, but one that is factually very inaccurate. The disproportionately rich have historically often sympathised with the most vile rightwing forces motivated by their common hatred for progressive policies. Look at Chile under the democractic socialist president Allende, when the minority of overprivileged Chileans colluded with the anti-democratic forces of fascist dictator Pinochet and caused the abduction, torture and murders of ten-thousands of Chileans. Same story in Argentine, Brazil and many other Latin American countries during the 1960s - 1970s era. And Anthea Jefferys claims that South Africa is on the path to "Socialism" (without defining what exactly she is referring to here), while in reality South Africa is further away from Socialism than model western democracies like Norway, Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands. All these countries spend enormous amounts of their GDP on publicly accessible health care, free education (up to the tertiary level) and welfare / unemployment benefits.
