There is a book by Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills called 'Africa's Third Liberation', where the lay out that the 1st being independence from colonial rule, with the 2nd being the overthrow of authoritarian regimes and the rise of multiparty democracies. The 3rd liberation being economic transformation where Africa’s next challenge is to free itself from economic dependency, corruption, and inefficiency - essentially where we are at the moment. The authors state that that many liberation movements struggle to transition from revolutionary forces to effective governing bodies. They also state that liberation movements stay in power for about 30 years on average - so remains to be seen what happens in 2029..
@evertonbouwer403815 күн бұрын
@dorrienvenables3057 thanks for the reference. Personally, I don't see the ANC ever 'liberating' themselves from Italian cut suits and French champagne. They have already failed in this regard. Their supporters just hasn't realized it yet.You get one shot to get certain things right, one small windows of opportunity to set yourself up for a win and if you don't take that gap, you won't get that chance ever again. They had that window of opportunity in 1994 and blew it. I'm not an economist, but looking back at those years, the Mandela administration had the chance to truly begin eradicating mass poverty and improving the lives of the black majority. Instead, they opted for self enrichment and affirmative action policies. Their former HQ was called Shell House for heaven's sake. It doesn't get more obvious than that.
@dorrienvenables305715 күн бұрын
@evertonbouwer4038 there should have been much more of a stronger push for federalism and for privatization of state entities during negotiations. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have happened much, they basically continued with the centralized economic agenda that the Nats had been doing with all the SOE's, except way more poorly, along with significantly increasing the levels of welfare. Things may have been quite different if they had changed tack and rather downscaled the overreach of the state - but yeah too much commie influence and wanting implement the NDR, which only leads to tears at the end of the day.

Some ppls security tends to stay in the news for the same wrong reasons, it seems. Boesak got punished for losing W-Prov to the DA. What changed betwn the volk +fatherland war + 1994? The Berlin wall suppressing east Germany (with Marxism) came crashing down - leaving a few die hard Anc comrades + Cuba as its flagships. The former with all its little clone comrade parties wanting to commemorate communism by sacrificing SA to follow in Cuba's footsteps. The similarities btwn SA + Cuba are negative economic growth, bankrupted SOEs, unemployment, horrendous inequality + rising, spreading poverty, less + less freedom of speech - the list is endless. Why would any leader attach themself to a failed ideology? To maintain a cruel + draconic class system of a small privileged political elite + the rest, suppressed, deprived + poorly educated. They dont care if it's called a failed country in future - as long as their privileged lifestyles stay intact.

Nothing since then has changed my outlook pertaining to politicians. Looking at the politicians worldwide I cannot identify, except Milei of Argentina, that strike my as a stellar candidate for its peoples. Second to him, Netanyahu in Israel fighting for his people. Trump in the USA still have a way to go before he can be judged. Europe, Canada , Australia bad. Russia ,China and most of the small so-called democracies world over and Africa just show they are all as in my first ballot, shite.
