Digital has overtaken print throughout the media, and it’s no different in the realms of food and travel. But can travel websites move beyond top ten lists and gauzy food porn? Can you build an audience while talking about the world as it really exists, with all its heartache and idiocy and occasional triumphs? Anthony Bourdain-writer, raconteur, host of CNN’s Part Unknown-became a partner in Roads & Kingdoms, a digital media startup based in Brooklyn and Barcelona, in 2015 to help shape what comes next. He talks food, fear and the future of travel media with Roads & Kingdoms co-founder Nathan Thornburgh.

About SXSW:
Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place early each year in mid-March in Austin, Texas. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

Such a cultured, deeply intelligent, thoughtful and incredibly generous soul. One can feel he is shy, he stammers a little. Eternally great Anthony Bourdain. God broke the mould. 💖💖🙏🙏

Possibly Tony's best interview ever. Relaxed, forthright, totally himself. What a sad ending to a wonderful man. May he rest in eternal peace.

god i miss this guy. his creative brilliance so transcended just ordinary food critique or travelogue. he would really dance on the line of giving people what they want - yeah in spite of him repeatedly insisting otherwise - and providing an unadulterated opinion on what we should consider important. again, he would i'm sure reject the depiction, but i think he was a real auteur. damn miss him a lot.

19:10-20:30 That's why he was always relevant and cutting edge, and did just what he wanted. But at the end of his long journeys he just wanted a place to call home and be loved (like his hero Iggy Pop said to him), except he put all his eggs in the Italian actress basket and she didn't reciprocate the sentiment. Virtually all his work that now resides on DVDs or KZbin and other streaming services can still be celebrated. RIP chef AB.

SCAN IMAL they are convinced he did...You are convinced he did not. Both opinions based on feeling rather then fact. What does the evidence say? Was there any indication of foul play? What did the investigators observe? Did his friends and family notice anything leading up to his death that was unusual? As of right now there is no indication...not even the slightest hint that he was murdered. Please provide evidence of your theory that is other then emotional response to a tragic death.

As a depressed person I can see He was not depressed in the least,His many friends felt the same. as a very tall man to hang Yourself of a doorknob is extremely difficult. These celebrities all just choose to kill themselves in the exact same way in hotel rooms? Again Bourdain would not leave His daughter behind, nevermind all His friends. I just cannot accept it. believe it or not our media is designed for one purpose only-to keep us distracted and in the dark/programmed. Can I prove it?no. but I stand by My belief that there is 0.00000 chance He killed Himself

As someone who has struggled (and many of his "friends"), Tony was definitely a dark, cynical guy. He may have struggled with loneliness (spending 300+ days on the road per year; living in hotel rooms and airport lounges) and people say a possible lack of close intimate relationships. As Bill Buford said, "Tony had many friends for one week". He said in Medium Raw that he was suicidal daily back in 2010 - after his first marriage failed. Tony - following his passion but getting killed on the terms that he and CNN agreed to - might also have felt guilt/sorrow for his relationship and tough schedule to see his daughter (who of course he loved). Apparently, Tony only was home in NY one week each month. Imagine taking time to edit, finalize, plan, produce, promote (he was doing fucking weekly CNN talks with these fuckhead hosts), and speak at random events like this; not much time left for his daughter. He was following his love, addiction, and passion for cultures and traveling. Some of his personal struggles of the past and his of the present conspired against a great man. Through his shows and books, Tony comforted me and kept me company - at times where I wouldn't have the means or money to travel to see what he saw.
