Man... My father lived in NY for years he shared an appartment building with his brother and two arab dudes, You know one those sketchy appartments filled with rats. He eventually ran out of money and gave up and came back to mexico to go on with his life. Long story short he loved a place called ZABARS and we visit ny like every two years and man i can tell that just the smell of the hazelnut coffee bring tears to his eyes. Also, he loves KATZ's but he never had enought money to buy a decent pastrami sandwich until he want back with me and man i will never forget his expression when he had that sandwich. Food in new york for most people is just a great experience by itself but ny people will never get to feel that nostalgia. That adds something else to the food. I only can imagine how he felt wen he had that pastrami sandwich like 30 years later. I dont usually type stuff on youtube but i respect anthony bourdain and felt like sharing. Happy new years all.

shizzy35 there’s a good halal truck I always go to near the World Trade Center where I work. Chicken over rice is $5 and you also get a free can of soda 😃. But yes Halal is a must .. and must not forget the hot and white sauces either! 😉

I love how Halal cart food is now becoming an NYC staple. Pre-2000's, not quite often you'd see a halal cart but nowadays, they're easy to spot and have even rivaled the amount of hot dog carts! Every time I go back home, I always get pizza, pretzels, italian subs, bagels, mom's homecooking of course, and HALAL. BAM.

I mean of course there's the halal guys at 6th and 53rd, but plan on being on line for a long time. They have another location downtown, not sure exactly where though. If you're far downtown the cart at Whitehall and Water sts is damn good. Another pretty decent one was in the upper east side on 3rd ave at about 87th or so? Don't quite remember. Anyway, point being there's pretty much a metric shitton of halal carts. They aren't all gonna be good. Also, you can always hit a brick and mortar place too, if you want. Mamoun's on St. Marks is pretty outstanding. Also, the idea of a falafel/shawarma joint being on St. Marks is pretty hilarious. Anyway, take 'er easy.

There actually is some satisfaction in a New York street hot dog with some ketchup and mustard. It's not the best hot dog ever, but something about it gives you that rush of endorphins. I'd say the same about the halal carts. You can find a halal cart on every street corner, something I really miss in other cities.

I think he moreso was at the tippity top as a restuaranteur, not so much a chef. He was talented in his own right as a chef and had immense knowledge, but he would be the first to admit that he sucked by comparison to say like Marco Pierre White, or Ferran Adria. But I agree that this man appreciate food as a whole, not just the primadonna Michelin Star area. The guy could be as happy in a Waffle House at 2am as he would be a 3 star Michelin Restuarant.

New York Pizza is a unique experience. I like the way the man himself describes it all honestly. It’s not the best pizza or the best hot dogs...but it’s a staple of New York to get a bite to eat during the rush of day.

The french call it terrior. "a sense of place" You may not be eating the best hot dog or the best pizza but you are eating NYC. A NYC dirty water dog doesn't taste better anywhere than NYC. Goes to show why taste and volume aren't the only factors to good food. In LA street tacos don't taste as good in a restaurant as they do on the side walk. A French Crossiant is best in France. Growing up in the midwest a greasy spoon diner is the best breakfast. Not a $100 truffle benedict which is delicious BTW. I want crispy has browns, greasy over easy eggs, and coffee just good enough not to be bad.

You should read his books OP. Not only are they absolutely fantastic and vintage Bourdain, but a big incite into his mental health. He talked about killing himself a fair amount, as well as rampant drug use and depression. It’s one of the onky celeb deaths that ever actually affected me. Him and Norm Macdonald. I was on an Alaskan cruise with no internet when I found out Norm died. I literally wept in a tour bus when I found out. They were and are two hnique characters that touched a whole lot of peoples lives and we miss them dearly.

When I went to NY city a homeless man asked me for change and I only use my debit card so I said I don't have any and he told me to go f*ck myself. I live in Oklahoma . My husband and I opened the first legal push hotdog cart in our area in 50 years . I had not really looked at Anthony Bourdain and his stuff but I have to say after looking at many of his interviews the last few days I feel connected to him now . I used to be a bloody good dishwasher working in a mostly male Asian restaurant you had to be harsh and dirty to get by there. Never again . I would rather sling dogs on my own then to do that again . However I learned I am strong enough to make it I am just not despite enough to hurt myself like that again.

I thrive on corner shop pizza slices and sandwiches packed to the brim when I'm in New York, love it! Been to Katz's and some of the other legendary delis too, and it's just delicious!! A diner or two always on the schedule as well. The best hotdogs I've had so far in NYC was up around the MET. Don't miss the lobster shop at the Chelsea market... lovely food there too!

I just got back from NYC for the first time ever. I was there for 5 days. I went to Sarge’s, Katz’s, Russ and Daughter’s, Joe’s Pizza. Some bagel place. I went to a number of just local pubs and I won’t say dive bars but places that weren’t like super nice. Just had drinks at those places. The only “nice” place was Del Frisco’s, which was outstanding. I was very disappointed in myself that I ended up not getting a dirty water hot dog though. Honestly though it was one of the best trips of my life. I had such a good time.

as a new yorker... my obsession with dirty water hot dogs stopped once I turned 13... there are alot of grilled dogs just as cheap all over the city... im not gonna say New Yorkers don't eat them.. but its rare one of my friends stops at a hot dog cart... but maybe construction workers and people on lunch breaks from time to time... I'll say it. Don't eat dirty water hot dogs. They're just packaged dogs dumped in water. At least with one of those halal gyro carts, there's some cooking involved. Papaya King for a grilled dog. "Utility pizza" - look for the places where cops eat. They know the best ones. At the very least, a place with plenty of people so the pizza isn't sitting cold, waiting to be reheated.

Halal Guys is a national chain now but the NYC carts are still the best. Tried Halal Guys in Chicago and New Orleans and the ingredients are slightly different I think. Taste is a little off.

I’ve always been fascinated by New York Pizza due to the Pizza Show on munchies. I have had Joes, and Prince Street Pizza. The spicy spring at Prince street is something everyone should try, and Joes is just classic New York Pizza. I definitely do want to try more, like Lucalis, or Di Faras, if I ever come back to New York.

dude food in new york is amazing and its everywhere. so many cultures. i dont want to be the bearer of bad news but honest to go the best pizza I have ever had is in NYC. and I think what hes trying to say that even $1 pizza in nyc is better than $5 pizza anywhere else. Its so good. A reallyyyy good slice might cost around $3 and when you ahve those kinds of slices they are really phenomenal.

doctornige1 just because Naples has the original doesn't mean it has the best pizza. The dish evolved and changed in America. In Naples though, they'll use fresh ingredients that are better for sure.

Some recommendations at Manhattan, Downtown. As a creature of habbit... *Prince Street Pizza*: Get the fucking pepporoni squares... bit more expensive, 4~5 a piece, but it's SOO FRIGGING GOOD. My favourite place *Artichoke*: NOT NY style pizza, but good still. Got a few spots here and there *Joe's Pizza* at Carmines and also at 14th Street: Almost anyone would tell ya it's the quintiseential NY slice place. Get the regular. It's cheap too *John's of Bleecker Street*: They don't sell slices but pies. This whole street has great pizza places *Keste's*: Best Napolitan Pizza *Bleecker St Pizza*: Pretty damn good pizza. Regular NY place Ones I know in Brooklyn and are fucking great: *Pauli Gee's*: Another great neopolitan-esque place *Roberta's*: Made Bushwick what it is today, a hipster spot. It's pretty good but pretty high end *Best Pizza* at Williamsburg *Di Fara* at Brooklyn: Quite far from the popular areas. Long line. But if you love pizza, this is the place to go Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg has a lot of great food and pizza here are some *Vinnie's Pizzeria* *Joe's Pizza* also here *Anna Maria's* *Vinnie's at Nausau ave* *Tony's at Nasau Ave* And there are many more that people will swear by

The pizza is good cause of the water. My buddies go to one place in Newark NJ, where the man owns a bunch of places in Manhattan as well. Even the owner told them that he makes the dough in NYC then brings it to Jersey every day. That is commitment. The water in NYC really is delicious.

Two friends from Louisiana had a 24 hour layover in NYC. First thing we did was buy a slice of pizza at Howard Beach. We ate our slice on the A train to meet up with more people. We had a great time.

This is what I’ve been trying to tell people for years. Good food isn’t necessarily based on quality ingredients or even taste. It can also be something with character, story and it can also just be an experience that made it great.
