I'm 42 y.o. and far from a Star Wars nerd, so no, this has nothing to do with that. The fact that this special had the 'Star Wars' name attached only made it more bizarre, but it would have been just as bad without it. In my opinion whoever wrote this special didn't know how to write an engaging script to save his or her life, and threw a bunch of stuff at the wall and almost nothing sticked. The comedy skits with Harvey Korman were painful to watch, even though the guy was hilarious when he had something to work with (e.g. 'Blazing Saddles'), the 'drama' was insipid, and there were plenty of 'filler moments' (e.g. minutes filled only with wookies groaning and grimacing) that would have bored even the most patient kid (or adult).

We have to understand the time and context in which "Star Wars--The Holiday Special" was made. It was still the 1970's. George Lucas was so busy making "Star Wars--The Empire Strikes Back" that he let others at CBS write and produce this special. Variety shows are dead today, just like vaudeville died in the 1940's. Just like very few musicals are made today etc. However, variety shows were very big back then. "The Brady Bunch" variety show was the death nail--they killed variety shows as well as the "Sha Na Na" variety show killed variety shows. Google it--it was bad. I missed seeing Star Wars in 1977 at the movies, so "Star Wars--The Holiday Special" which was also called "Star Wars--The Christmas Special" because it came out during the holiday season--that was my first exposure to Star Wars. As a child I thought this made for television special was weird but not bad. Again, I was still a child. Yes, I admit it is bad now, but it is so bad it is actually good. Just like "Plan Nine From Outer Space" is so bad, it is good. "Star Wars--The Holiday Special" is now a cult classic. You can see it on KZbin for free. It is now a period piece. It is a relic of the 1970's. Embrace it, revel in it's badness. Use the force if you need to. If you grew up in the 1970's and survived the fashion and the hairstyles and the campyness of that decade--so if possible, let this television special be you badge of honor, your birthright into into newer times and experiences beyond the 1970's. Sometimes we must embrace the dark side of "Star Wars." Just like Tina Louise needs to embrace her character Ginger Grant from "Gilligan's Island," I ask George Lucas to embrace "Star Wars--The Holiday Special." Anyway, it is better than "Howard the Duck."
