I'll say it - it's the most obvious 10 I've heard this year, perhaps this decade so far. Few albums completely resonate with my soul right out the gate like this one. It is so sprawling and adventurous, yet grounded and overwhelmingly human. His artistry is as boundless as his authenticity. I truly cherish these moments - it reminds me how powerfully and profoundly good it is to be alive. Thank you Phil.

@@throwaway1743 i haven’t been able to stop listening. i think it’s his best work to date, especially since he did this for what we know completely solo.

“his best work in perhaps decades” so we’re pretending a crow looked at me never happened??? literally one of the most emotionally impactful, devastating albums ever made. i know music is subjective or whatever, but i feel like at some point there’s records that you have to acknowledge as one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

I Heard Whales (I think) is one of the most eerie songs I’ve ever heard. The music just dropping out to the noise of waves and mysterious sounds feels so creepy to me, but it’s amazing how Phil could capture that feeling of the story he’s telling. Very existential. Loved the whole album too.

in the liner notes, phil mentioned much influence taken from stereolab, which i can definitely hear, and i'm here for it! album hit me like a ton of bricks--a sprawling masterpiece, imo. p.s. there's a big lebowski reference on the microphones 'mt eerie' album, as well! gotta love it.

Phill can capture a myriad of feelings and express them in poems, songs and production, be that a 50 sec song, a full drone piece or a 48 minute track. He is sensible for all things human Nature and is pretty interesting to get through all of this, even if its not the poppiest songs youll ever hear
@darrenbrown7037Ай бұрын
I think Phil just creates an atmosphere that you can’t experience with any other project. Some of his songs are incredibly sparse and ambient, sometimes very folky/acoustic, sometimes loud and harsh.. but it always feels cathartic and healing to me. If I’m lost, or feeling depressed, driving around to mount eerie or sitting in my living room listening to the album Sauna.. nothing else sounds or feels like this.

I mean, haven’t we all heard this before? Sun Kil Moon trying to get a date with My Bloody Valentine?
@perspii2808Ай бұрын
Not to be condescending, but that seems like quite a vulgar comparison lol The lyrical quality alone makes it a significantly different experience to mbv or skm. And the atmosphere of his music is way different to either of them, both sonically and thematically
@ichasedacrow229 күн бұрын
i think it's very reductive to boil the album down to that just because it's indie folk with heavier distorted elements. wholly original ideas do not exist, not everything has to be groundbreaking to be authentic and beautifully executed
