I normally agree with you Hatman and, I’m certainly not a Joshua fan but, I think you’re wrong here. Joshua has reached the top of his profession. He’s been the Olympic champ and the unified champ twice. He’s never ducked a fight and only been beaten by a brilliant little fat Mexican scrapper who no one else wants to fight and survived arguably the best boxer of this era. Franklin put up a good fight…he’s golden gloves…know his stuff…very fast and very aggressive. Joshua has everything left to play for. With Fury being a confirmed ducker now, Joshua still has some genuinely good fighters to step up against that Tyson will never fight - Joyce, Dubois, Zhang, Hergovic. Matchups between all of these guys make great fights. This surely is what we want to see when Fury stops blocking it all up.

The ability of a jazz player, a dancer or a boxer often related to confidence, being able to trust in the process rather than the outcome. When you lack confidence you feel you need to plan everything to give you the best chance of success, it leads to anxiety, over thinking and the “robotic” mindset that we see with AJ, some people are just built this way, they know they don’t have the natural confidence of others so this is the only way they feel they can succeed. When things go wrong, they double down on this strategy and become even more robotic and so the whole thing becomes self fulfilling

Yes you are correct that Cus also pointed out the importance of mind set and how this was more important than ones physical attributes. Good points Hatman with that robot comparation. There is this fictional channel "Death Battle", and one featured Termniator T-800 (Arnold) vs RoboCop (Peter Weller). The Terminator and Arnold fans cried because RC won in the end. Why? Because the Terminator is an Androide, a 100% robot who looks like a human. But RC is a Cyborg and even if only 5% of the killed Cop Alex Murphy is left, some of this 5% is his brain. Ultimately the Skynet computer system in the Terminator franchise lost in the end to humans because it was never able to dublicate a human brain. RoboCop would outsmart the Terminator because he is more creative.

Good comparisons, but AJ has another problem on top of relying on his trainer to tell him what to do. If it was only the trainer reliance, that could be solved by hiring a trainer who can play the jazz of boxing and give AJ the instructions he needs during the fight. But players are incomplete pianos, all boxers have keys that don't work or work improperly. Unfortunately, AJ has a limited number of keys he can use, while Fury and Usyk simply have more keys. An extreme example would be Wilder who's only got one key, but that key is so loud that it got him all the way to the top.

I also agree that AJ looks like he will need some smaller fights to adjust to his new trainer. The problem he has is his profile is too big to have under the radar fights, even if they were on free to air TV(which is not happening), he'd get a lot of stick. DAZN and Matchroom have to make their money back off him too with the contracts he's signed. If he has the will power he will ignore all the critics, he will take pay cuts if he needs to, to get those learning fights he needs to in the bank before he makes another charge becoming a world champion again. I hear he's been working on evolving his ring IQ but I'm not sure we will ever see an AJ that will work fighters out on his own. He is smarter than he's given credit for in general but the ability to focus and think on your feet regardless of what's going on around you is something that you have to find within and most fighters simply don't have that. However, in THIS era that's not such an issue, just as long as he comes with the right gameplan(and a plan B too) and a coach that can relay the right instructions at the right times. There's nothing wrong with this, IMO a fighter can still be considered great if he has the right man in his corner. Lets not act like anyone could do what Mike Tyson did because that's simply not true.

AJ is a good boxer, but I called it about 10 years ago during all the hype - he has a very 2D boxing style that is 'vulnerable' to a quicker, more skilled and technical fighter, who came in the form of Usyk, a far superior boxer with more tools in armory than just big punches. Franklin was a good fit for him, I knew he would win, unconvincing but a win. It's sad to see but he's finally been exposed.

Klitschko had much much more, distance controll, timing, stopper, best jab in a game, footwork, stamina... But no chin. Many people close to Joshua (guys like Bellew, Chisora & even Hearn himself) know deep down inside that he's on the decline but they'll never tell him directly because of their closeness and Eddie being his promoter obviously has to back up his fighter no matter what. Joshua's main problem is that he's surrounded by yes men that tell him what he wants to hear. Anyone remember Rob McKracken saying 'Brilliant Josh' during the 1st Usyk fight? Joshua doesn't have the viciousness & killer instinct he had when he fought Klitschko. The loss to Andy Ruiz changed him to a timid, gunshy fighter. Joshua would get seriously hurt if he faced anyone out of Fury, Wilder or Joyce right now. Tune-up fights are probably the way to go but Joshua wants to get back in the deep end. Everyone calm down about AJ being finished. Its too early to judge. AJ has a combination of lack of confidence after 3 loses and a fear of getting knocked out again. So hes scared to risk letting his hands go. Plus he has more to learn about rapid fire combinations and ring movement. Although AJ did not gas out, the pace was not rapid. 255lbs did not increase his power, hence no spectacular KO. So its a waist of excess mussle weight. Whatever weight AJ had in his early fights when he was fast and did not gas out is his fighting weight. Around 236lbs is his perfect fighting weight. Stamina and a little bit of power.

How is he meant to have ‘under the radar fights’ for improvement when he’s always under the spot light? He’s become a victim of his own success and is heavily criticised any time he doesn’t live up to expectations. People need to back off and let him do his own thing. If he comes good then great and if he doesn’t then at least he tried and made a fortune along the way alongside an Olympic gold medal and being a two time world champion.

Yeah boxes to instruction, if he hasn't been told to do it he won't do it. He's the Ron Burgundy of boxing.

Unfortunately Joshua will always need guidance. This can still work out in the end and he could salvage his career but he needs to loosen up and be more aggressive

It reminds me of Frank Bruno, the same style it’s like he’s got too much muscle

We have the possibility of some great fights with some very good fighters. The trouble is, they just ain't fighting each other. That's why this era won't go down in history.
