Anthony Minghella was a great director. I heard an interview with him back in the late 90's on NPR discussing The Talented Mr. Ripley, and he was very sharp. He had plenty left to give. RIP

What a great year it was for motion pictures. All the nominees were terrific, but The English Patient was so epic, so moving and unforgettable.

One of my favorite films...The English Patient. From when I first saw it when it came out, it captivated me and I would watch it again and again. It was my type of film...the depth of characters, the story and setting of place and time in the background, the cinematography, the music...it is superb in all ways. I enjoyed the book as well and think this is an amazing adaptation of a book. I have watched this film hundreds of tines by now as well as the commentary. There are so many lines from the film that I use and recall when the situation arises. Sad the he died so young.

It's really nice to see people that prefer Fargo to English Patient yet still acknowledge that Minghella's direction was unparalleled that year. As for me, I'll always love Fargo a little bit more, but English Patient is an incredible film, and I love them both dearly, and the English Patient/Fargo win is no where near as dramatic or undeserving as the How Green Was My Valley/Citizen Kane or Crash/Brokeback Mountain episodes. RIP Minghella.

Perhaps the greatest loss to cinema the world has yet known. Minghella would have continued to get even better and better, as all genius artists tend to do. He had so much more to give. Tragic loss. And now we are left with much garbage and mediocrity.

Absolutely the best choice for director and picture. Fargo deserved the golden raspberry for the absolutely worst movie of the year. The English Patient rocks
@gustavchristie92159 жыл бұрын
Although i'm glad and think he deserved to win and that The English Patient is one of my favourite films ever, I have to say that there was big competition in this category. I didn't think Fargo was particularly good but impressive all the same and I thought The People vs Larry Flynt was a great movie with wonderful performances in it and put a different spin on one particular aspect of American society.

Fargo: Darkly funny and perfectly plottedShine: Extraordinare Secrets and líes: A masterpiece. The people vs Larry Flynt: very good.The English patient:... It's 3 hours long ,it's not lawrence of arabia and...WHY should i care about the characters...or the plot?!!
@1997residente8 жыл бұрын
It just that Critics have compared it with Lawrence of Arabia and Casa blanca in such a huge way that baffles me. Perhaps some others find the romance and locations more important than the pacing. perhaps i'm too demanding or ungrateful with the effort of the adaptation,It"s not my cup of tea.

The English Patient is an old example as to why the general public is increasingly alienated and disgusted by "Hollywood". Long dull pretentious garbage that the Academy picks as best picture, 'cause it's supposed to win. Sling Blade ranks HIGH among the most robbed movies ever
@organboi2 жыл бұрын
You are truly out of your mind. There is nothing Hollywood about the English Patient, one of the greatest films of all time. It is a British film. Duh. What must you think of the real Hollywood Oscar bait films of today? And btw, Sling Blade is borderline mediocre, absolutely pretentious and had much more Hollywood backing than you probably think.
