Sewing Machine Adventures: Unboxing/Setting Up A Sewing Machine & Sewing Some Gloves!?

Welcome to the first episode of sewing machine adventures! And I thought it would be a good start unboxing and setting up a sewing machine, and try my hand at sewing some gloves, which I originally thought was going to be a beginner friendly sewing machine project.....it was far more difficult than I thought! I definitely think the threading aspect of a sewing machine is the hardest, and something I've always struggled with, and the fact that I managed to get that done today was a miracle. I do feel like I need to spend a little more time with the sewing machine just to really understand how it works, and to get my head around setting it up in the future. As for sewing some gloves, I don't think it was the best idea to begin with, and I think in the next episode if sewing machine adventures, I'll be attempting something much easier! But any suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments!

A year ago I started my sewing journey and a lot of your struggle remindes me of my on back then. "Lucky" me had a professional seamstress at his side. She let me torture some paper sheets before I was allowed to handle fabric. And in hinsight, she was right. I still run through some training paper sheets for different sewing lines as a warm up, before i go to the actual project. My first projects where a cushion, napkins and matching rings from faux leather and some mittens for cooking (way easier than fingered gloves). So keep up your enthusiasm, sewing is a fun way to express yourself.

I can see you becoming a minimalist and textile expert. I used my grandma's sewing machines. She had one that was an earlier version and was operated by hand, and the other's a modern one. I'd suggest leave longer bits of thread hanging from the machine, cos the machine I used would unthreaden itself when started moving. But your sewing machine might be different. I'd definitely like to see a sewing series! A pillowcase is a good project to start with.

I can sew up a storm. Learned on a 1890’s Singer Treadle machine when 5. The bobbins look like a bullet for those. Have a computerized Singer and an even older treadle than what I learned on. This was made in the 1850’s. Honestly, I prefer the older machines. Those will sew through anything even upholstery. When older did tailoring work. My bosses always brought suits to me to tailor. ❤❤❤ this video. The bobbin had me rolling in the floor. lol 🥰

@@AnthonyCrammen Think of sewing like a puzzle. Some people glue jig saws together. Think of the thread as the glue. Sleeves, pants & gloves the fabric always faces itself. You’ll turn it inside out after sewn. Also there is a guide beside the needle housing. That’s how you keep a straight seam. But I do ❤️ to sew. Made all the kids clothes till they were in 4th grade. It relaxes me. But thanks for the comment. Just take it slow and I’m sure you’ll be great at it. You’ve done it before too. 🥰

Bless your heart! I am proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone! Like any skill, don't use it and you lose it. Think of the top thread and bobbin thread like a lock. The two threads come together, lock together, to make each stitch. If you run out of bobbin thread and don't know it, you will get a line of thread "sewn" in the top - until the thread gets tugged and you realize there's nothing underneath holding it in place. Practice loading thread on your bobbin - there's a whole technique there in itself and every machine tends to be just a little different. Your booklet will show you how to do this but videos help as well. To save yourself time (and money) I'd invest in a matching color set of bobbins and threads as well as plain black and white. Your material may have been stretchy, but it's only stretchy in one direction it looked like. If you cut the material against the stretch, it's not going to stretch (if that makes sense.) Good luck dear. A pillow would be an excellent starter project. I remember when I was in the 6th grade in Home Ec that is what they taught us to make. Start with a square pillow, and then step it up by making a pillow in the shape of an animal or something. That way you learn how to sew smaller bits on to the face of the pillow before actually making the pillow itself. Most of all, have fun and don't stress. (btw, I too am a leadfoot lol)

Hello Ant! Nice choice in machines. I have a Brother project Runway sewing machine, Brother PR Serger, Brother Dreamweaver quilting and embroidery machine and a Brother Heavy Duty sewing machine. I'm pleased with all of them! A few tips: first and foremost, become very familiar with the machine, its capabilities and limitations and ALWAYS turn the handwheel toward you, NEVER away. You may very well mess with the macines timing and that will require a technician to repair. Start with simple projects, pillow covers, shopping bags, etc. Taking on a complex project when learning is one of the biggest reasons a new sewist will call it quits. Be sure to use a quality thread such as gutermann or aurifil. The cheaper threads shed much lint and cause problems and require more frequent cleanings in the bobbin area. Also, when changing thread, cut it from the top and pull it through the normal feed, not up from the top. Be sure to keep a sharp needle in and appropriate needle for the fabric. Well, this probably has you crossed eye by now, so I'll stop here. I hav3 faith in you Ant, you can do this, I'm looking forward to your upcoming sewing project videos 😊 Happy New Year my friend! 🎆🎉

I have my Great Grandmother’s Singer sewing machine. It’s over 100 hundred years old and has been passed down through the generations of women in my family. I must be such a disappointment because I have no idea how to use it. Or any sewing machine for that matter. So, I think you did a fantastic job and would recommend making mittens instead of gloves. That way you won’t have to deal with each individual finger. I, personally, am looking forward to a sewing series. I’d like to see your progression as you do more and get better with practice. 👏🏻👏🏻

Congrats on the sewing machine! And so proud of you for figuring out threading it and actually sewing something! I don't know who said gloves were easy. My bestie and I have been sewing custom clothing as a job and hobby for many years and we still struggle with them. The thumb needs to be made separate from the rest of it and sewn in a very specific place more towards the inside of the hand, or else it won't sit right A few tips! Don't start in the middle of the fabric. Then you've basically wasted the whole piece! start on the edge as close to it as you can. Always make sure the fabric is face to face so what will be the outside is "kissing." Leave at least a half inch of hemline or else it'll end up too small. Since you're just starting out maybe do an inch until you feel more confident! It also gives a little extra fabric in case something is just a little too tight and needs to be brought out. Don't pull the fabric through the machine, that can cause tension issues and puckering or waving of the seams. Always let the machine feed the fabric through and just keep your hands to the sides and guide the direction. I hope to see more sewing success for you in the future! And thanks for all the joy you bring!

Wow, two textile craft wins in a row! You go girl!😂😂😂. I also have a sewing machine I don’t know how to use. Maybe you will inspire me to go and figure it out and do all of the mending that’s sitting on the table next to it. As for advice, I would start with something simple like a cushion or a cushion cover, or even something super simple like a tea towel or a dish rag because you only have to put a hem around the edges and that will teach you how to sew evenly in a straight line. Next, I would try a simple tote bag with handles and maybe an inside pocket, then I think you need to advance to using patterns. This is where my knowledge falls flat. I personally hate patterns 😂😂😂😂. At high school I remember we made a cushion cover, a pair of pull on shorts and a flannelette shirt. There may also have been a pencil case with a zipper in it, but I’m not sure about that being at school. At any rate, I think you’re very brave and I will look forward to learning with you. Sewing by hand, is one of those things I’m just absolutely hopeless at, so I really need to master the sewing machine, even if it’s only for putting up the hem on my jeans. It’s a necessary evil. I hope your Christmas was Fantabulous, and that 2024 is good to you. My wishes for you are excellent health and prosperity in all you do. See you in 2024 my friend.❤

When you mentioned gloves, I was thinking Noooo, Nooooo mittens man mittens first, too many fiddly fingers to contend with🤦‍♀ It took 2 very long years in school just to make a skirt, long enough for the said skirt not to fit by the time it was finished! That was enough to knocked me off making any item of clothing that required a pattern. Roll forward roughly 15 years after the torture if those lesson and I could make anything that is square or rectangle, cushions, curtains, table clothes.. You get the idea🤣 so your idea of a cushion sounds perfect to me, maybe even applique faces onto it (you can always pull out the hot glue gun if the face shapes are to curvy to sew👍). Love this idea of a sewing series, I'll have great expectations of next years halloween outfit if you can master your sewing skills. Happy New Year Ant.

I’ve been thinking of getting a sewing machine off and on for the last couple years but I’ve been scared of it getting jammed. I may finally get one since you’re brave enough to give it a go. I haven’t used one since I was a kid, my Mom was a prolific sewer and crafter back in the 80s. The only real projects I did start to finish were a pillow and a sweatshirt in home economics as a a high schooler. I would think you could start with a T shirt as the easiest thing since it’s the same front and back and the fabric is the same on both sides so no inside out problems.

When I was in highschool I had to use a sewing machine to make pajama pants at school. When it was already threaded and set up, I was good at using it. However in order to pass the class you had to memorize every single piece of that sewing machine. And there was no teaching, they just gave you a piece of paper with a diagram on it with all of the names of the things on the sewing machine, then told you to memorize it. I couldn't because I didn't know at that time how I learned and how my brain was different and I didn't learn like everyone else. I can't just memorize something and put it on a test. I have to actually understand it and in my school you didn't get time to understand anything either you memorized it and pass the test or you didn't memorize it and you failed. But even though I had an ADHD diagnosis they would not give me an aide to help me. So I just failed all my classes and dropped out. And of course I was told by many teachers (you have so much potential, you're just not trying hard enough". Oh, I was trying, trying my hardest, but it still wasn't good enough. I'm sorry for my rant lol.

Honey!! You didn't cut the fingers apart! 😭🤣 You gotta cut between the fingers so they can be turned inside out individually. 🥰💖 And you've done better than me, I haven't been in the same room with a sewing machine for almost 30 years. The last thing I did with a sewing machine was to tell someone else what to make. lol It was for my Girl Scout Gold Award (kind of like the Eagle award in Boy Scouts if that's a thing across the pond...) And all that is, is a test of leadership abilities, so I didn't have to make a thing, I had to manage other people making the thing. lol Worse than that, I haven't personally used a machine to make a whole project for myself in 35 years! Middle school home economics class. lol though I have thought about digging my mum's out of storage recently. There are things I want to do that I can't do with the mini one that I have meant for tiny crafts projects. lol

Great first attempt. You need to give anything you sew a seem allowance.... Make the pattern for your gloves with a bit more space in them, think of it this way, your patten was 2d, but your arm and fingers are 3d.. Also, you should have a compartment in the bottom of the sewing machine, with spare bobbins in... You did better than me , with my fist machine lol The needle went right through my fingernail.. Keep going once you get the hang of it', you'll love it...
