Anthony my darling, dear boy…… you forgot to cut extra for a seam allowance. Always cut an extra 1-2cm more (wider) than you need so that you can sew the seam. That will solve your sizing issues. When you sew things together you can’t beat using pins to keep it all together. That should help with where to stop and start as you NEVER pin where you don’t need to sew. The front of a T-shirt is usually cut differently at the neck - a bit of a deeper semi circle to fit your head through and fit the fabric to sit better. Also if you use stretchy “T-shirt” material you will need to change the foot on your sewing machine. Check your manual to find the right one for stretch fabric. I think it’s usually the clear plastic one but your machine manual will tell you which to use. Other than those little beginner’s mistakes you did a great job and I AM SO INCREDIBLY PROUD OF YOU!!!!! A good way to learn how something is put together is to unpick it carefully and put it back together. You can see how the fabric is different on the inside and how the thing is hemmed and cut. Also sometimes you can even see how big the seam allowance was. Make it something old in case you can’t put it back together properly. For your next project I suggest a tote bag similar to a library bag for books. It’s like a pillow case with handles. Use some of your mushroom fabric. I think it would look great. And you can add one (or all) of the rejected pockets from this T-shirt project onto the tote. You are doing great with your sewing adventures. Keep up the good work. Don’t worry about mistakes along the way. This is how we learn in anything we do. Celebratory hugs coming your way 🥳🥳🥳🫂🫂🫂❤️❤️❤️

oh Anthony! I wish you would take a sewing class! wrong fabric, and even experts like me use PATTERNS! and when you cut it out no seam allowance! no wonder it didn't fit! @vincentb53915 ай бұрын
Even if it didn't fit it was really cute! You did well! A tote bag might be a fun one since it's simple but has a lot of techniques that you can practice during making it Advice! The scoop on the front of the collar should be lower than the back, or else it might choke a bit. We never use math for our clothing making and sewing! Just practice and writing down measurements and comparing to make sure each piece is the same. Hem when the pieces are together, that ensures that the hem looks clean and matches up properly, so you did that right! If you have a shirt that's falling apart or can't be worn for some reason, stitch rip it! Then you've got a pattern you can use for making more. Don't forget to leave hem allowance! You added the sleeves at the right time! lining the whole thing up and securing it in place inside out is the best way. It's hard to describe so I hope that's clear. Always sew pockets and other details on before attaching the two sides of the shirt. If you're using a fabric that has no stretch, it's best to size up a couple sizes. You can always open the sides of this one and add stretchy panels on the sides too if you want to wear it. Hope this helps! You're doing great!

You didn't add seam allowance, and even cotton won't work for a tshirt, as a tshirt needs to stretch. Keep trying! Sewing is hard, but rewarding. You did great! We all start out with our projects going wonky like that. It's part of the learning process.

Anthony, you took on a superbly difficult challenge with sleeves, and a pocket, so you need to give yourself some grace here. If you've ever watched The Sewing Bee, even some of those fail on sleeves. And as for the maths and patterns involved with sewing - I've learnt to just follow the instructions and never question them. It is a form of witchcraft that makes no sense until the last second. Having said that, I gave up sewing about 40 years ago (I was VERY VERY VERY young), when I decided not to dabble in said witchcraft lol I giggled when you said you'd been unwell, but were feeling better now, thank you for asking, as I expected the words 'no one asked' to pop up on the screen lol

Hey Anthony! You just sew the highest point of the sleeve to the top of where the shirt seams meet. Then sew around it and then make a seam under the arm. It takes time and practice so don't stress. Also wrong material for the T- Shirt. You need stretchy cotton or something similar. Good job! 🌟

Sweetie, you were so, so close to understanding what you needed to do. Seam allowance, it's generally a great idea to allow for one when you are making anything sewn by hand or machine. For everything you make in fabric, always allow 1 or 2 cm extra material around the outside of the item your making, so you have something to sew on. I have to say tho that you did really well for someone who just looked at an existing t-shirt and tried to copy it! It's impressive that your t-shirt was as good as it was. Btw I love that material and the black version too. Have a great weekend Ant, glad you're feeling somewhat better.

YES!! I was going to suggest a tote bag to start, get your basics down. Then make a tote bag with a divider in it (so it's a 2 pocket bag) and make a hanging pocket in the tote bag. Just gradually start making things difficult. You made the pillow and did a good job. Tote bags are generally easy to make but will seem intimidating at first. Cut out two rectangles, hem the ends of those pieces. Cut out a handle and sew the two sides together - but make sure that you make it wide enough that you will be able to turn it right side out! A dowel comes in handy for turning the handle right side out. Then play the handle where you want them to be (you can actually do this before you hem the bag ends and sew it at one time. Once you have the handle(s) sewn on all that's left is sewing the two pieces together. Tada - a bag! Make it harder then and put a divider in, small pocket on the inside, maybe a pocket on the outside! You can do this Anthony! :D

Think I'll be giving a tote bag a go next, we'll see what I end up with though 😅😅 I'm definitely learning a lot more as I go though! 😁😁
@ritawilbur61285 ай бұрын
Hey, you remembered to sew it right sides together! Can't tell you how many times I've forgotten to do that meself. When I was young, I sewed quite a bit of my clothes, but I was terrible at fitting, so I made very loose dresses, things like that. But it was always amazing to see how you can turn a two-dimensional flat piece of fabric, into something that fits the contours of a three-dimensional body. Pants especially! Or trousers, as you'd say in the UK. By the way, if you ever decide to finally BUY a pattern, it will have step by step instructions!

Well! Such a brave and bold effort! Good job! My 2 cents: if you want to try a t-shirt again, it helps to take the the original one completely apart to get the pieces right. Note: The front piece is not the same as the back. Then (and this is a big one) when you cut, cut it a cm or two bigger all the way around. I'm American so that's 1/2". That way it won't sew down a size. Stretchy fabric is a must for a T. Next project? I agree with @gothiccharms - tote bag. Keep up the good work!

too bad it didnt fit, it would have been cute! here are my 'tips' : If you're going to use a shirt as a pattern, cut your patterns bigger.. you have to allow for the stitching part, and the stretch youre losing, a solid 3-4cm wider all the way around. you did the sleeve bit kind of right, its easier if you put the sleeve tube inside the shirt with the edges together and sew it. considering you figured it out without a real store bought pattern I think you'd make a great seamstress someday!
