So I thought I'd challenge myself a little more in today's episode of sewing machine adventures, and try to combine a bunch of my sewing skills I have learnt over the past few months, and attempt to sew a pair of sweatpants/jogger bottoms from scratch! We're talking lining, pockets, draw strings, hemming, elastic and a bunch of other things I had no idea how to sew! And I think in the end I sewed quite a decent pair of sweatpants! I definitely made a few swing mistakes, and I think if I was to sew a pair of sweatpants from scratch again I would make them a million times better, but I was still quite chuffed! I feel like the biggest error in these handmade sweatpants were the knee placement, the crotch fit, the length, and then the overall finish, but these things can easily be fixed next time! But let me know what your thoughts were on my sweatpants that I sewed from scratch! And let me know what I should attempt to make in the next episode of sewing machine adventures!

I have to say Ant, you have impressed me with your sewing skills! I would have had to use a pattern to be honest in order to sew joggers like that. You did so well! I love that bright coloured material you used. Well done for creating joggers of your very own, and even lining them too! You are a marvellous individual! God bless you Ant.

That "knee" bit is supposed to be the crotch. You did amazing. If you would have flipped the legs with the knee toward the inside you would have room for your bits. Pockets are sewn in when you do the side seams. I was so proud when u said I'm not doing the pockets. U learn little bits as you go. You've come along way since you started! Keep up the great work

Oh, I am so delighted with these joggers:) Well done :) Kudos and hugs. I am excited to see the next sewing project. There is a sewing machine attachment called a walking foot, it helps guide bulky, stretchy, or slippery materials so it will not bunch up on you. Always fun to hang out with you :)

Umm, the knees were the crotch, thats why they feel odd, but harem pants are cool. Try adding cardboard smaller than the crotch allowance next time, I made a dress out of similar fabric years ago, and it really does stretch and move while you stitch if you try to guide it in the machine. It can't be pulled through a little like cotton. Overall not a disaster though. If you want to add the pockets, sew them in first, then cut, then sew again?

you can use a grommet to put the drawstring through to protect the hole from future ripping of fabric. I am so happy that you stuck with using your sewing machine! Practice makes perfect! :D

For knit/stretchy fabric the best way is to use an Overlocking machine. But those are usually very expensive and complicated to work. But worth it if you know you're going to sew a lot of stretchy fabric. With a normal machine it's best to use a zig-zag stitch, or sometimes machines have an indicator that kind of look like two straight stitches besides each other, I just learned that that type of stitch is good for knit fabric too :) Great pants, love the fun fabric, that's the fun part of making your own clothes, they can finally be fun fabrics and not just black and white!

Why don’t you try making a quilted wall hanging? You can find easy block patterns online. I recommend using a classic nine patch because it’s just sewing squares together. I recommend 100 percent cotton. This way, you can make something else with your sewing machine and have a challenge to make something new. ❤️🧵🪡

Hi Ant! I love your jogger pants! They look amazing. With regards to your sewing machine not liking the fabric, are you using a stretch material foot attachment? Most modern sewing machines will have one I think. I’m not a sewing person myself so I am relying on my dodgy memory of sewing stretch material in high school, which was many years ago. With the pockets you usually sew them in at the same time as you do the side seam. Once again I’m no expert but I’m sure someone else will explain that better than I can. I’m so glad you didn’t cut the material and try to put pockets in this pair of pants as I think it would have caused you a lot of grief. Can you unpick the bottom seam and redo it narrower? Also, if you want to add elastic or cord to a hem usually you sew the channel thing without the cord or elastic, then you put a safety pin on the end of the elastic/cord and, push it through the channel you have created. It’s not difficult to do. For elastic I think you need to attach it at one end first, but I would suggest you watch a tutorial before attempting elastic. Overall, your sewing skills are just fabulous and I’m so glad you found something that you love after so many years of being afraid of sewing. The satisfaction you get at the end when things go right is just so wonderful to watch. I know we can’t tell from video what you look like in person, but just for the record, I think you look absolutely stunning just as you are. Please don’t start making any drastic changes to your appearance, it would break my heart. 😢 sending hugs as always❤

As to why the sewing machine eats the fabric - that's a knit fabric, right? In other words, like a t-shirt material rather than an oxford shirt? (I'm American, maybe y'all call those shirts by a different name in the UK.) Anyway, if it's a knit fabric, there are special sewing needles you can get to work with that kind. But as you discovered, it's still possible to sew knit fabric without that needle, you just need to be careful. Also, the part you call the "knees" - that's actually what gives you room in the crotch. But all that said - wow, Ant, this is very impressive! When I was learning to sew, I found trousers very challenging. I don't know how many times I sewed them wrong. And I was using a pattern with instructions! And your choice of print is just fabulous, of course!

Your pants are so cute! For a first time you've done such a great job, pants are hard! Even we still struggle with them sometimes. A stretch needle would make sewing fabric like that so much easier. I'd recommend using a 90/14 needle because it works really well and also doesn't break as much as some of the other stretch needles do the crotch needs a curve outwards to make room for things, I think you accidentally put that part on the outside of the pants. depending on style will depend how big that curve needs to be We also learned better by just jumping in and trying things until we found what works for us, as well as patterning from clothing we owned that we really liked wearing. Keep up the great work!

they came out fabulous! I like them 3/4 length too! I always go with bigger, cause you can always resew it tighter but if you cut it off you got nothing to expand on lol. Oh, and you could always put the pockets into the side hem so you aren't cutting the fabric just opening the side! on the waist part you could have rolled it over twice and then sewn the top and bottom of it so that it has more of a substantial feel. but that's mostly 'fluff' lol extra things you could do to them. they came out great Ant!

You're absolutely amazing! You've been sewing for 5 minutes, & you've turned out fabulous flamingo trackie daks (I'm Australian) without a pattern or anything! Very impressed! To improve comfort in the crotch area, you can cut a diamond shape, with each side about 7½cm / 3", & sew it on the outside, over the join in the crotch seams, long side pointing to the back & front. Once it's secure, cut out the original seamed area, & you'll find that the diagonal sides of the diamond, & not having four seams up your bum, will make your joggers even more comfortable. This probably sounds a bit confusing, so Google crotch gusset to get a better idea!
