Would that be an issue for street photography and street portraits? Given the need for correction. I also wonder if it would be good for rolling shots as well. Hmm.

A few of Canon's recent lenses lean heavily on profile corrections over native optical quality. At the same time they have prevented third-party full-frame AF lenses for the RF mount. They are sabotaging their own brand. I switched from Sony to Canon over a decade ago. The in-hand comfort and the amazing 28-70mm f2 have kept me there, but I'll keep my options open for my next camera purchase.

Regarding that RF 50 1.2 vs 1.4 (which is probably coming). I got the Sigma Art 50 1.4 for my R6 II and it's incredible as it's about 99% as sharp as the Canon RF, but the Sigma actually focuses 2x faster than the Canon RF lens and cost me $2000 less brand new than the Canon. It's a great option until the Canon 1.4 version comes out very soon.

So I had been hearing reviews that this lens has distortion even with corrections on. Based on this video, I don’t find that to be the case. However, I’m on a super tight budget, and I can’t justify that kind of spending. I’d rather get the EF mark 2 of this lens. I currently have R5, R7, 24-70 2.8, EF 70-200 2.8 mark 1, 100-400 RF, and my only prime is the 1993 50mm 1.4, so I just feel the late EF primes do well enough for me.

Die EF Version 35 1.4 II kostet neu mehr als das VCM Objektiv!
@aratafreecs34452 ай бұрын
I went from APS-C to an R6 Mark II last year and was somehow disappointed by the choice of wide angle lenses. The non L primes were quite disappointing in optical quality, so I could either buy an old EF lens or go fuck myself if I wanted a 35mm f1.4. So I said "fuck Canon", sold the camera again and went with Sony. If they had this lens on offer at that time, I'm not ao sure I would've went to Sony this quickly. But I'm happy, now that I can have native Sigma Art, Sony GM/G and other good autofocusing lenses. The Sony 35mm GM also happens to be ine of my favorite lenses.

I bought my model when it came out. I am very pleased with it. The autofocus is very fast and quiet, I like the fact that Canon thinks about photographers and filmmakers. The clickless aperture ring is a great advantage of this lens and, as I have already mentioned, the VCM motor. I think it's the best 35 on the market at the moment.😀

@@ER-gn8io Exactly! Results matter. And the result of such a huge distortion is that approx beyond the APS-C frame the final image is never really sharp. Many people including me also aren't ignorant to what level of product quality they get for the money. And honestly here the ratio is very low. Compared to for example Sigma 40/1.4. And please, write in English, once we are on the English spoken channel.

Most informative review so far about this lens! In nature photography I am fine with the RF 35mm F1.8 lens - which is almost a macro lens. But in people photography, for example in low light in churches, I would need a faster 35mm with faster autofocus - so I will probably go for this RF 35/1.4 VCM, despite the horrible distortions it produces.

I did have some negative feelings because of the profile corrections when I bought this lens. But even though the image has to be stretched quite a bit it is still noticably sharper than my old EF 35mm 1.4 II. At some point I saw a video from an expert in optics. He stated that it was only a matter of time until manufacturers would rely more on digital corrections. Because if they correct lens errors optically every correction almost certainly has a negative impact on some other aspects. Now that we have cameras with no OVF but with powerful processors the manufacturers have the opportunity to correct some lens errors digitally if they can be corrected this way and only correct issues optically if they have to be corrected this way. And although I did not expect a whole lot of this lens when I bought it I really came to like it. It is small, light, extremely sharp and in Capture One you can even get a slightly wider angle of view out of it which can be an advantage sometimes. Things I personally don‘t like about this lens are chromatic abberations which it produces and the pretty poor looking sun stars when you stop it down. But overall it is a very nice lens for sure.

There really is a lot going on behind the scenes we don't know about. I think it would be super valuable if Canon came out and made some sort of statement like this. I think there are a lot of people unnecessarily worried about the distortion of this lens.

I purchased the 35mm f1.4L lens to use for videography in low light environments. After assessing the quality of the lens, I’ve contacted the supplier to have it returned. The noise in the edges is atrocious. The digital correction is inconsistent and aggressively reduces the image quality. Outside of that, the lens autofocus system would stop functioning and the camera would seize up. I’m very disappointed in the quality of the lens. Hopefully the new 24mm and 50mm f1.4 VCM lenses are better quality. For now, I will have to work with the 50mm f1.2L.

The profile includes cropping after distortion correction. And the profile of this lens crops about 8-10% of the frame area. This is nonsense. This is not 10mm or 18, this is 35 - correcting such lenses has never been a big problem. Sigma, Sony GM - you can't say that these lenses are very large, heavy or expensive. 4% distortion has never happened before in this class. Canon literally invented this. And this is unacceptable. Because at least top primes should reveal the potential of the sensor. There is no point in justifying this lens. Canon has skimped here. This needs to be said honestly.
