Many thanks for your time and effort, supporting all interested memory architects. i do have few questions, apprecaite your time on this. 1. Memory Palace: How should I revise my memory palace? Should I draw it in a notebook to keep track, or keep it entirely in my mind? - which means, those that i may not need to memorize for the moment, i need to continue revising?!! If I choose to keep it in my mind, how do I recall and connect the images I originally used, and how can I effectively reuse the same images during revision? 2. Different Routes for Similar Topics: Should I use a different memory palace route for two similar topics, or is it possible to use the same route without causing confusion? 3. Expanding on question 2 - If I am studying two different topics that are closely related and somewhat similar, their details might overlap, but each topic has distinct functions. Suppose I use the memory palace technique, such as visualizing the route I take to school, to remember these topics. * Can I use the same route for both topics, even if some images or locations are shared? * Will my brain be able to differentiate between these two topics and effectively use the same route, despite the overlap, to learn and retain their distinct functions? appreciate your time on this sir!

Thanks for your questions. You can revise your Memory Palace as you wish, but I recommend always writing from memory and using spaced repetition in this sense: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHTXmXiVg8ajoMk For all things about re-using Memory Palaces, please see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i57XXpyko6Zgq5o There are more nuances in the Magnetic Memory Method Masterclass if you need them. For all "can I?" questions, always remember that there are no Memory Palace police. Your brain is yours to discover, and no one else can comment on it. Keep a Memory Journal and your mind will likely reveal itself to you. But the brain? You'll need to do some scanning to see what's going on with that. ;-) Hope this helps and talk soon!

Every time you speak my respect for your skills, knowledge of teaching, and manifest intellectual honest increases. (Keep it up please!) It would be easy to gush on, so instead just presume that while considering this pushback: You are quite accurate that digital amnesia and digital incompetence is being trained into the vase majority of people. Graphical Interfaces and the cult of the "mouse" are among the worst examples where users are literally trained to avoid understanding the app, their own data, and the power they have to create new understanding. In these system you are 'allowed' to do little more than precisely what the developer and designers would be 'appropriate' or 'needed' by you. However, at least a few of us have discovered methods to use technology even more effectively, accurately, & more powerfully while getting the software to help TEACH US how to increase these skills. It's a skill set too. Knowing when to memorize and when to depend on search engines, plus the levels of additional skills for making searches more effective and efficient, and knowing when and what to memorize or what to simple understand or ignore are all key strategies. Not to say these methods are always better; I envy your magnetic memory mind and I'm actively working to do the recommended and necessary work to raise my own skills to emulate much of yours and other experts. It's amazing, and can be frustrating, how most people ignore us when we tell them how they can use their computers more effectively by doing a bit of learning first, which is directly analogous to what you surely experience when people don't understand the value of unlocking the memory capabilities of our own minds -- or understand but never take action to do the work. Now I have about 5 more memory palaces to create today, plus rehabilitating my major method and further committing to automatic memory the new "chess peg method" I've designed. (Just a chess position peg systems modeled after the Major System to represent files a-h and ranks 1-8 plus the pieces, the color of the squares, etc. Nothing difficult but I'm sure you know how tedious it can be to get a large peg system 'finished' and polished sufficiently to be as automatic and rapid as a good students multiplication tables.) My goal began to improve at chess using mnemonic methods (among others) but it may now be the case that chess is just the training example for expanding the development of my mnemonics and my mind. Thank you for being a big part of all that.

Thanks for your kind words and thoughts on using tech effectively and efficiently. By all means, there's no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but I think the issue is ultimately so nuanced that no "one" will likely figure it out. As a species, however, we might have a chance, and it certainly appears that we're moving in the a solid direction, even if turbulence and disruption must be part of the picture. Thanks for being part of the mission to keep the older memory tradition around. There's no reason it cannot coexist with everything else, so long as people continue to know about it.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Exactly. Much like the idea of "1-world government" which at one time sounded like a possible utopia, eliminating war etc. Until we realized that no matter how benign such a system starts, it only needs to be corrupted ONCE by despotism or other tyrannies to make if very difficult to overthrow. Most people, especially Americans, abhorred the idea of a "universal ID card" ('papers please?') that could be used to track and limit our movements or discover who and were we associated. And yet we almost all voluntarily adopted smart phones which make that tracking thousands of times more effective. Most of us pay for the privilege. We've been expecting, dreading, and hoping to see the Singularity for a number of years even if our survival, and that of our children and theirs, is far from assured. The point of the word 'Singularity' is we literally cannot see beyond the "event horizon" to predict if it will be a livable Utopia or the Borg collective or annihilation for humanity and individuality.

As for "hoping" the techniques work, hope is not needed. All you have to do is study and practice the techniques. Although different people use them differently, there is always a way to get a very powerful outcome from them. It just can take a bit of experimentation based on where you currently are with respect to spatial and other aspects of memory. But above all, there needs to be the removal or at least reduction of negativity, so please be sure to watch the TEDx Talk I linked you to above. It should prove tremendously useful to you over the years to come. And please let me know if you find it useful. :-)

I have both an overactive mind's eye and I have some of what I call directional impairment. I actually do get lost in my house, and I can't understand where I am physically on the planet. I have always been able to speed read, since I was five. I visually see the images in books like a tv show. I usually have at least 98% reading comprehension. I can remember entire days, smells, tastes, textures and feelings from childhood. As I've aged, I am losing hearing and a little memory retention, which is made worse by anxiety. My memory process has always been something I visualize as a giant warehouse full of file cabinets, and I send off an intern to retrieve those things that are stored away. I also use the alphabet as a memory device for those "tip of the tongue" types of things. Hi Anthony, I've been working of memory palaces since last we talked and making use of free time I've got now during lockdown. I am studying law, and English is not my first language. Can you guide me how to remember concepts and how to break it down. Most of the concepts are abstract so I try to break them down by syllables like Coincidental- coin + Dental, whereas for some like law I imagine statue of justice and for the particular word justice I imagine the metal scales. I wanted to ask if this is right way to go about it?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this, Akash. You are going in the right direction, but if you want to speed up your results, the best guidance I can give you is to take a full training. So many people are trying to piece things together with free content on the internet. As a law student, do you think anyone would want to hire a lawyer who never buckled down and studied the fundamentals? I certainly wouldn't. It's the same thing with memory. So my suggestion is find a program or book from someone you trust can help you. Then take their training seriously and practice it for at least 90 days before adding on any other training. In the MMM Masterclass, you will get the fullest and clearest portrait of how to properly create your images to the point that you never think that information is difficult or abstract again. All you have to do is complete the program. And that is true of any program. Does that make sense?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM well, i usually recall info through visual means( seeing it in your mind almost exactly as you saw the info) but about context, i want to be able to recall info both verbatim and not so verbatim and that also with a higher speed and accuracy. Thank you .

I've had experiences like that to a certain degree, and some memory masters have said they experience it totally. Unfortunately, they're not around to interview the way I interview people these days, or I would ask them. But generally, I would suggest not placing special emphasis on the visual compared to the other Magnetic Modes. Rather, explore all of the Magnetic Modes and be able to shift between them successfully so you can recall the information you want in a variety of ways. In my experience, this is power instead of force. But each person has their own journey to follow, so if visual-only is your focus, power to you.

I love your videos! I do have a question, is it okay if I use places from videogames places more than of real life? Games like the Sims and Kenshi have building mechanics. They have a kitchen, a place where animals can eat and a place where you can store important stuff. I mean, I could build a house just to make a memory palace out of it. The characters make sounds when entering buildings (a metal house is not the same as a wooden house) , and I could quickly imagine the taste of the food that is stored

Hi Anthony, I have been watching your video for several months. Last night I tried the memory palace and number encoding to memorize a phone number. It was a success !! I can memorize it way much faster... I have been building my own number-letter encoding in the past several weeks. 0 to B, 1 to C and so on... then I take 3-digits chunk from the phone number. Then create funny crazy objects using 3 letters. Then "attach" the object to station in the memory palace. It simply works... Now, if I want to memorize 10 phone numbers (for example). Which way is best: 1. create longer memory palace (like 100 stations) 2. create many many short memory palace 3. if I run out memory palace (haven't got time to create new one), is it good to reuse a memory palace to memorize another thing? Let's say I user memory palace A to memorize 3 phone numbers. Thanks
@AnthonyMetivierMMM3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Frans. There is not necessarily a "best" way. But one thing for sure is that there is no way to run out of Memory Palaces and people who don't have "time" haven't yet really understood this technique. Everyone has time to set themselves up with more Memory Palaces than they would ever need. So the answer is not what is "best." The answer is a question: Can you do both and will you devote yourself to the technique so that you can?

You know I tried to use Buzan's memory map as a memory palace for different history figures. Now, I didn't do the due diligence by periodically studying the content, but I was doing some experimenting with different forms of memory palace and mnemonic devices in general in regards to retention. The weird thing is you mentioning Stephen Kosslyn as a resources. Well, I watched a couple KZbin lectures by this Kosslyn, and one of things I notice was when I move from one object to another in memory map (spiral form), I lost the next object after a couple moves through the memory palace. Example: In the middle of the mind map, I would have the historical figure in question ( William McKinley: represented by the McKinley Bridge in St. Louis, MO ( I'm a native, so it's easy to remember) - then I would have a mental representation of the first fact about this person doing some kind of action - in this particular example: I had a giant Brad Garret (From Everybody Loves Raymond) standing behind the McKinley bridge holding Bart Simpson - this represented Garret Hobart McKinley's first vice President - Bart was shooting his signature sling shot at Teddy Roosevelt who was charging up San Juan Hill - Representing both Theodore Roosevelt as the second VP of McKinley's administration and its invasion of Cuba. But after that, things got cloudy, and one of things I notice is the blank space between each station on the memory map. The distance is a bit of an issue especially with artificial constructs. This Kosslyn's research shed some light on the issue, and spacial awareness of the brain in regards to brain activation with images placed at distance away from each other. Again, I didn't do the memory map as a study device but more of an experiment with solid historical example, I could use for recall as I tried different memory devices. What my take away from Kosslyn research in regards to mnemonic systems, and from personal experimentation. The closer together the items are the better chance of recall. I noticed with the several mind maps - that the initial image and anything that might be relatively close in regards to the middle was easy to recall, but the further things got away from the middle the less recall, and more mental strain. But, I don't experience this problem with memory palace based on actual places - it just happens with artificial palaces. The blank spaces between tend to be a mental hang up for me even when I direct actions between the two stations. I notice when I use memory palace based on an actual place - the distance is not an issue because my mind flows from one to another seamlessly. Sometimes I struggle, but it is always resolvable and easy to trace through or back - with an artificial memory palace, I just don't recover the information once I hit a snag. I used both a step type system with staircases 3 up and three down totally created in my mind and the memory map (spiral) and both faded quickly relative to the memory palaces based on real places. I can still recall over 90 percent of the information I committed to the actual MP. But I would say for the most part, I recall bits and piece of the other with around 10-20% on average. The other thing with Kosslyn's research: What is your take on the larger you can imagine an image in your mind the more brain activation is seen in MRI and CT scans. i could actually do some experiments with EEG to see if brain wave activity increases with different image stimuli.. I don't know, I sure found it interesting and connected to a couple of my issues with artificial memory palaces.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for many of us artificial Memory Palaces place an unusually high level of strain. It's not clear why, though. Some people report using imaginary MPs very well. About size and testing with EEG, I'm not entirely sure. I'd be interested in designing some experiments and wonder what it would take to get Kosslyn involved. My interests would be to have a trial just for size as a spatial consideration, plus a split-test where people are using all of the other 7 Magnetic Modes. Plus, I'd like to see serious studies done where people actually care about the information they are memorizing. As far as I can tell, every test I've seen involves memorizing information that the test subject does not care about. I understand the problems involved in having people care about the information, but still think it is a problem that test subjects are not chosen from pools of people passionate about the learning targets.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM, Well, I work as a supervisor at a Sleep Lab, and I have background in doing EEG's - I still do some occasionally here at the hospital on in-patients. I would enjoy doing the kind of research you're suggesting, but I'm afraid, I would be extremely limited on any meaningful research here. I was referring to myself as a research subject which would be a ridiculously small sample size. What I would be really interested in is doing research on memory and sleep in regards to cues that might benefit not only people seeking to learn and improve memory, but patient with neurological disorders. I can't find the article I originally read, but this link has a paper covering what I'm going on about www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-57613-7 Thanks for responding

N=1 experiments are not entirely invalid. Ebbinghaus kicked off memory as a topic in the psychology of memory by doing experiments on himself, so it is possible to accomplish many great things starting as a "research army of one." You could also explore research grants that might enable some assistants to help you expand. The USA has many remarkable funding opportunities for those who know how to look for them.

I find myself relying on the 2nd path the most. I get a mind block when i try first person view - I suppose it will take practice. So can we even use locations on people, like my wife, family, friends or famous people? i.e. their leg, shoulder, nose, hair. Coming to think about it - 14 years ago, I learnt the farsi words for the different parts of the body after only hearing him say them once by using imagery located on that body part. If it's space... could we even use digital screens as memory palaces, like websites, microsoft task bars, word, excel, or other apps. Though there are more fruitful memory palaces probably, these are things i come across every single day as part of my job and daily life.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM4 жыл бұрын
I think it's worth experimenting with 1st person point of view. It was too late for me to ask permission to use the clip, but I heard Matt Dillahunty talking about how spatially aware he is from gaming. I need to reach out to him anyway, so maybe more info will come from that. He's a mentalist, so may well use memory techniques. Yes, you can use any space as a Memory Palace. Too many people limit it, but here's the catch: It's very difficult to use these small places for a lot of people if they haven't mastered the bigger spaces first. That, at least, has been my experience over the years. It's always a matter of finding your own way based on well-formed goals so that you can really work your way into using the techniques over time with info that matters. Please let me know how it goes, and here's a thought for you: I personally would find a task bar too small. However, there are ways to arrange folders on a desktop that can work wonders...

Normally in games like this you play a 1000 times and the layout of the maps almost never changes. And also the games encourages you to know every single detail about the maps. Thanks for your note about this. A few things: 1) If we didn't take steps to grow our audience, we wouldn't have one. We appreciate when people who want to learn these techniques acknowledge and respect the need to have an audience. 2) If you are just in this for you, then why bother learning? Learning is used to be part of a larger whole. To call anything a teacher does "blah blah blah" shows a lack of respect. Skip around if you please, but the whole notion of "the point' is missing the point. 3) People who are in a hurry to learn are usually the ones who never do. What does it matter how fast you're going if it's in the wrong direction? Perhaps slow down, pay closer attention to how the world really works, support your teachers so you can continue to learn from them. But keep spending time on complaints and "blah blah blah" comments and you might find that soon the entire internet has to be paid for and there will only be advertisements with no knowledge. Be grateful, be involved in the success of your teachers, and post only when you have things that help the community. Helping your teachers grow and understanding how and what helps them grow is the key to getting more help. Otherwise, if you cannot have empathy for people working hard to help you, the answer is simple: Create your own KZbin channel and demonstrate how to do it better by having a bigger and more successful channel. I will look forward to that and wish you much success if you can pull it off without asking your viewers to join your mission. :-)
