This video made me realize that the one who wanted to show himself as a macho man wasn't Joey, it was Chandler. That's why all his relationships with women failed, or were unpleasant to him. The only relationship that succeeded was the one with his best friend, a person that he trusted enough to show his true self. Great video, as always!

it was also a problem that Ross had as well. Even though I agree with him on the "we were on a break" issue he had with Rachel, he was toxic most of the time. He was the definition of a "Mama's boy" and I feel like he didn't really care about the girls he was dating. Chandler on the other hand felt like he wasn't loved by his parents and in his dating life he always chose to have a relationship with whatever girl showed interest in him, because deep inside he wasn't feeling worthy enough for something more. He only masked is insecurities. And he was at least funny (which was another of his coping mechanisms I think) which gives him a bit of a personality. That being said I'm not justifying what he was doing, I'm just trying to explain his behaviour.
@catherinecampbell12154 жыл бұрын
I never saw Joey as the macho man. He was the sensitive one to me. Chandler was emotionally closed off, Ross was a player and Joey was the sensitive one. He grew up with a lot of sisters which probably contributed to the fact that he treated women very well.
@SC-rt7bq4 жыл бұрын
Chandler was just immature before Monica and that was pretty much it, he was not macho at all or trying to be. Look at how he handled his relationship with Janice. And how he was cruel about Monica when she was fat. He matured late. Joey might be immature, too, but he had the charm Chandler didn’t have. Kind of like Phoebe. That’s why Phoebe and Joey get along well.

I mean, what doesn't Chandler do wrong though? Every day YT recommends me a cringe cut of Chandler creeping on that reporter when he's stuck in a bank with her and he's literally hitting himself in the face in front of her.
@SC-rt7bq4 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it obvious? He lacks the charm, the ease, the warmness and the positivity that Joey has. He barely shows those parts of him to his friends. We connect with him because we know Chandler, his story and that he is actually a good guy. But he was immature ‘til Monica. That’s what the other women saw. He did wrong with Janice for example.

@Lokiyess4 жыл бұрын
I think that Rachel and Ross are very different, Rachel was the popular pretty designer and Ross was the nerdy geeky awkward guy paleontologist they have almost nothing in common, which makes it hard for them to have chemistry, plus Ross not only cheated on Rachel but they didn’t have trust, he didn’t like her with other men, other than Chandler and Joey, and she didn’t like him being with other girls, they didn’t have a middle ground and it would usually go Rachel’s way, but that’s just what I think

Ross is my least favorite of the “friends” he was very egotistical, he was very focused on himself... honestly he remindeds me so much of those “I’m a nice guy” guys. He was constantly trying to prove who he was instead of just walking it out.

You mentioned that you weren't sure if in other episodes Joey acts differently towards women, And it's actually one of my favorite videos about the Friends series. I don't remember who made it but it goes in depth talking about how Joey is made out to be the player, the bad boy etc and Ross is the poor love lost victim.... When, in reality if you study their behavior more closely and the way they treat women throughout the series Joey is actually the resident nice guy who was just really good at flirting with and getting women, while Ross is honestly more of a self entitled ass. You should look into it might make for a good comparison video between the two's behavior!

i love that you emphasize not putting pressure on the person who you may be interested in. Even if you are interested, being super forward is often creepy and objectifying, as you said. disrespectful. these situations, where joey shows comfort and self-confidence without being aggressive or arrogant, it's easy to be friendly and enjoy yourself thank you for pointing out these things!! makes me love joey even more haha
@omarstovall30214 жыл бұрын
While I agree with you i have to say that being super forward does not automatically make someone creepy. It's all about honesty connection and comfort. Whether you're the more charming silver tongue guy or the direct and more sexual progressive type doesnt matter. As long as you respect the person and value their boundaries. Not everyone can be a Joey! Be yourself.

I have a question for you good sir!! I’ve been really working on being myself around others and looking at people without judgement that you mentioned in the second half of the video. In an effort to find what’s actually important to me, I’ve been turning away things that are flashy or “in” that I was unfairly holding myself to. I’m doing things like eating better, going to bed earlier, drinking less while still being able to enjoy myself, etc. The irony that I’m facing now is that even though I’m doing these good things for myself, I’m now being perceived as even more egotistical and judgemental than before, despite me not giving a shit about the lifestyle of others. I’m not really sure where to go from here, as I know that there’s no reason why I should have to surround myself with people that aren’t supporting me and my best interest, but I don’t want to cut people off or be toxic. Advice?
@stephg8134 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with bettering yourself physically because it can heavily effect your mental health. But it is also important for you to better your self in personal growth, the first step is knowing and recognizing this pattern so you have already got that down. The next step is catching yourself in those moments and changing your point of view, remember: your first instinct is how you're taught by society(to be judgmental) your second instinct is noticing that and changing. You don't have to control your thoughts you just have to stop letting them control you. It is going to take time to break bad habits, so don't be so tough on yourself the fact that you want to become a good person means you already are. Make your intentions pure and you will attract people who are pure. Best of luck.
@TheCookieKing20004 жыл бұрын

I also want to chime in and say that, in any circle, when one person starts to move away from the status quo, whether that's a positive or negative choice for them, they will catch flack. It's "crabs in a bucket" mentality, to a degree (i.e. "I know I'm living unhealthily Seeing you do well for yourself reminds me I should be trying harder, but I don't want to try harder, I want you to accept less for yourself so I don't have to think about it."). It's also a bit if black and white thinking: "everyone wants to make the objective right choice, you are now making different choices than me, that means you think I'm wrong and must be judging me." Understanding their perspective helps, I think, not because you can change their minds, but because it helps you see yourself from another point of view: are you judging them? Are you trying to force them onto your level? Or are you just minding your own business and taking care of yourself? If the latter, should you feel guilty? I personally don't think so. Interestingly, you see this a lot amongst addicts: one person quits, everyone starts slagging them off, and the person making a healthy choice for themselves is the one who ends up isolated and alone. It's a bit of a myth that it is always toxic people in those situations, it's simply always the grit - the thing that's different. Sometimes, we suddenly become aware that the people we've held in high esteem actually kinda suck... And we probably kind of sucked too. And that's actually fine - you grew out of it, they probably will too, but it might look different on them than on you, and you don't have to stick around and wait for it. It doesn't make you toxic to leave situations that make you uncomfortable, especially if it's that other people are telling you that you are making them uncomfortable. What would be more natural than to step back? Also like in the moment, when these people are telling you to stop judging them or whatever, I'd advise saying something like "I'm sorry, I am not trying to make you feel that way. Can you tell me what I am doing that makes you feel that way so that I can stop?" Because it sounds like that is how you honestly feel. Sometimes it's best to just ask people what they need from you.
