As an older lifetime license holder I don't have any of those extensions like you mentioned HDR Merge, Pano Stitch, focus stack etc. If getting the upgrade pass means I get all of that as well as the newer upgrade tools then it's a no brainer! Thanks for bringing it to my attention as an option.

It is a read the fine print method of getting you into a subscription. You lose the Generative AI features in Jan 2026. So you have to purchase them again. That is called a subscription, you don't own the software. No thanks, for me. I have ON1. I quit buying Luminar upgrades because of their extensions an subscription. Not they are trying to get you into it without you knowing. No thanks.

You own the land but only if you obey the rules of the government, pay taxes, honor the Home owners association. Home renters own nothing and rent, and still have to play by all the rules. They cannot disable it or take it away from you it has been paid in full, because you own it like you own a house. Adobe, you own nothing and they can disable it and take it away, you rent and you must obey all the terms of licensing.

Someone has to pay for the cloud service. With Adobe you have to be a subscriber and they have a credit system for generative tools. Use more than your allotted amount and you have to pay more. So the people who use it more, pay more. Seems straight forward to me.

I'm new to Neo as it works much better with my Intel integrated graphics card than the other alternatives. What I have missed most is a decent printing module, it could be I'm missing something but I can't see an option to use my paper/printer profiles so I need to save, then print from another program. Also exif date in the edit module would be useful.

The 4 items on my wish list had been Improved catalog, Virtual Copies, Layer Stamping and Improved printing module. I had a LR subscription to address these. A purchase of Excire Photo addressed the catalog issue. I can work around Layer Stamping and a Print module. So, with this update I'm a happy chappy.

Looks like I chose a good time for getting a cheap lifetime license. Got back into photo editing a few days ago after not using Lightroom in years. thanks Anthony for the presentation, but skylum/neo has the messiest, most idiotic pricing structure I've ever seen : Prices are different depending on the 1st date of purchase, some tools are available until a certain date, and no longer after, the purchase of functions today that will only be delivered in 2 or 3 months' time, with no possibility of testing them (this is called crowdfunding, in fact). In short, I was one of the 1st loyal customers, but I'm disappointed and they lost me a while ago.

Regarding running speed I still have - little - problem with speed of edited photos reopening in Edit menu for further editing. Will this "virtual copy" help on it? Hi. Yes it's a nice update. Exif date... no word on this. Virtual copy to change re-open speed... no. Opening the virtual copy with a certain number of edits will (or at least in theory it should) take the same time to open as the original with the same number of edits.

So I'm curious. I have the perpetual license (bought it many years ago when they had the deals for $99 for 2 seats). If I update Luminar, will I be forced into a subscription even if I don't use the AI tools? I did get HDR Merge for free so I have a lifetime license for that add-in as well (along with some preset packs/looks, but am wondering if updating will essentially render my perpetual license useless and irreversible)? (I really only used Luminar for sky replacements but use Adobe for mostly everything else, but may just not bother with Luminar anymore if that is the route they are going). I don't need two subscriptions and while Adobe has been in some hotwater later, atl east it lets me get my work done and with good quality (AI tools are quite good). But if the Luminar tools are not that great, I'm not sure I want to be giving them a monthly subscription when I can just consolidate on Adobe products and use my standalone version as it is (not upgrade at all).

Not at all. The upgrade option is actually a really savvy way to keep your perpetual license but also benefit from having the most current version of Neo. Adding in all those extra pro extensions you haven't already got. The only thing that'll revert after Jan 2026 is access to the AI generative tools ( gen AI, Gen Expand and Gen Fill) which personally I never use anyway. So in a nutshell it's a pretty sweet deal to get Neo updated. Hope that helps.

I wish Luminar Neo would incorporate Lens Correction.. yes they have the OPTICS tab, BUT… why not make it easier and have automatic drop down various lens tab, ie. one specifically for GoPro camera models. I’m finding I have to edit lens corrections in other editing programs and then open Neo and continue there. Also, since Aperty is in the works… wish they would include SOME of the editing features of that program into Neo… such as stray hairs removal, maybe even adding shine/sparkle into lips, or even eyeshadow colour tools.

Can you tell me why on a number of occasions, when i have edited a phot and left it in the catalogue, it either disappears of is shunted into lost edits. Hi Jim, A good question! I've borrowed the answer from the Luminar Neo help files... "Luminar Neo attempts to accurately track both the edits applied to an image and its location on your hard drive or network. However, it is possible for an image to go missing. This typically happens for one of the following reasons: Luminar Neo was closed when you moved an image to another folder Luminar Neo was closed when you renamed an image or folder You moved an image at the Finder/Explorer level to a different location that isn’t in your Luminar Neo library. You unplugged or removed a hard drive or memory card that was in use. The application may not know where the source file is stored if this happens. In this case, the photos will be added to a particular album called Lost Edits. This shortcut only appears when images are lost. You will not see it unless there are missing pictures. Luminar still has a thumbnail image and a set of instructions that can be reconnected." I would think one of those reasons could be why Neo isn't able to keep track of your edit. To reconnect the photo so Neo can marry up the editing data to the original photo just right click (opt click on mac) on the 'lost' photo and then navigate to where it now exists on your computer. Hope that helped :)

Good question. The main advantage will be that we as the user can control the input via our reference image and therefore the result. Rather than the mood which does colour remapping but via an unseen matrix. All we're going off is the name as a guide to the result. If you like the look of, say, the matrix, you can literally just dump in a reference screengrab and "borrow" the colour grade.

In the latest release 1.21.2 they added a new search feature which uses AI to intelligently locate things your searching for. It works well for a lot of categories and sometimes throws in some weird results along the way too. But the process of manually tagging photos isn't a thing. You could create "holder" albums in Neo and drag / drop photos of people directly into their corresponding album - or places or whatever really.

With a combined move and job change, I haven't had much time for photography this year - but I'm curious about one aspect of the catalogue situation: I use two different PCs - a laptop when I'm travelling and a high-end gaming PC at home. Until now, there really didn't seem to be a way of having a single catalogue that would be synced automatically between the two devices. Which is a massive shame. I shoot and edit mostly when I'm on vacation, and it would be wonderful to easily pick up some of my edits on my far more powerful desktop. Long segue, short question: Has this situation changed in any way?

Hi In the last few weeks, I have read on several forums that photographers are complaining that Luminar NEO is obsolete when it comes to HDR! They say that the software could and should do much better with 3 or 5 exposures. For light photos that contain a lot of information in the dark areas and dark photos that contain a lot of information in the light areas, the software has a lot of room to make the photos more balanced. Others say that they stopped using Luminar NEO some time ago. I only use Luminar NEO. I don't know how other software behaves in this regard, especially Photoshop, which is what the vast majority use. In my opinion, I also think that there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to Luminar NEO when it comes to HDR, for the same reason I mentioned earlier. That is why I suggest that a video be made comparing the latest versions of both Luminar NEO and Photoshop. I have no doubt that it would be very enlightening. I know you made a video like this a while ago, but the results may be different now.

Nice idea to do an up to date comparison. I'll bear that in mind. Personally I think Neo's HDR is excellent in comparison to other HDR software. For sure there are areas where Photoshop (+ knowledge of what you're doing) outshines Neo but I don't feel this is one of those areas.

Sorry to say, but the key to not losing stuff (and believe me I learnt the hard way) is to run regular backups. You can duplicate / backup the catalog on a frequency schedule that means you don't vomit if you lose edits between backups.

The issue is that if they want people to take this seriously for Pro use (and not just use Luminar as a plug-in to Photoshop/LR) they need to have it so it can support large amounts of photos. This is a problem that Lightroom had many years ago but they figured it out and some have 300k+ without issues so hopefully they can figure it out. It used to be lightroom would get slow after about 40-50k images, but not anymore.

I use on1 Photo Raw for most of my editing but export to Neo for HDR, focus stacking and panos as it is better at doing these. One little thing that would make my life easier is ability to export edited images back to the folder of original photo BY DEFAULT so it goes to the correct place in the ON1 catalog. I can't see a way of doing this - or I have missed something? It is so annoying!

While video editing and photo editing share some crossovers in tools they're very different beasties. For solid photo editing for a newbie you can't look past Neo ( They've got a sale here btw bit.ly/NeoSale ) It's a really good balance between effective editing but very easy to use. I've done a lot of free videos on this channel too so you can get up and running very easily. They do two payment versions - subscription or buy outright. The one-off licence is very affordable for what you get. I also love Lightroom and Photoshop, but to get really good at them took me years, whereas you can create good edits in Neo on day one. Hope that helps. 🙂

Interesting... I've seen some update Videos and all of them had that sample videos but none of them mentioned it, that this have been samples taken from somewhere else. instead, the viewer was set to believe that this samples has been pre-recorded own footage.

Interesting indeed. Just for clarity in case anyone scrolled past that bit of my vid, these are indeed example recordings provided by one of the techies at Skylum using an M1 Mac. I have seen some of this tech in operation in person on a laptop too. I was also asked to demo the colour transfer tool and provide feedback - but unfortunately they didn't have a PC build ready, only the Mac version.

The Upgrade does look good but why oh why are we still waiting to be able to Flatten Layers - Skylum need to get their act together so much for all of the AI stuff it would be great to get some of the basics that are sorely missing!

they really need to add the ability to control printing. Printing ability is really basic almost an after thought.

Given the (somewhat unusual) Luminar terminology, should we speak of "merging down" a LAYER stack, or "merging down" an EDIT stack??

In the right direction, surely... but still it worries me that the developers can´t or don´t have the will to implement a completely dng workflow among Neo and other apps: We can do it with Dxo Photolab or Pureraw, Capture 1 or ON1Photoraw, Lightroom etc, and export results in a DNG file, that other software can pick up and continue to edit in a 100% raw editing workflow... but Luminar doesn't. I made several attempts and inquires about this with Skylum only to receive answers like "why do you need that? or that this feature is not on the future road map. I guess all other photo editing software is wrong about this.. For my part, can't figure how this is so. Perhaps you have any hints, reasons or reasonable explanations for this omission?... I just got it, and I don't understand why I don't have the " Colour transfer " tool.... This is so weird. EDIT : so apparently, these tools aren't released yet ^^

Correct - The big fall update is scheduled for a couple of weeks time. As I said in the video this is a look at the tools but isn't ME using the tools. The colour transfer tool isn't far away though so you'll be updated once it's released.

I think the biggest mistake Skylum made is their pricing categories. So confusing. When is the early upgrade available and when is it over? I need to know so I can auction off one of my children to afford it. All the new features look great. Looking forward to layer merge. Thanks Anthony !!

Version 1.21 has killed my workflow. Its slow and cannot export any photo as locks up and GPU goes 100%. NOT HAPPY with this update. Want to go back to 1.20

Yeah, I wish I could! I asked Skylum for the original samples/resources but unfortunately they've been buried away never to see the light of day again... 😕 they were assets we could add in to our photos but were super impractical 😆

I really want vector paths as per Photoshop, for me the ability to ‘cut out’ within in image is a must as is being able to work within a selection. Command J in PS, (layer via copy) would be good too. It’s the overall selection tools that in my opinion lets Neo down. Sort out the basics first then bring on the bells and whistles afterwards.

And if you upgrade, you lose it in Jan 2026. It is a way to get you into subscription without you knowing it. You have to read the fine print cause they ain't gonna tell you this straight up.

The generative tools are not going to be promised to lifetime licences due to the fact they require servers running 'cloud' based calculations for the results. Tbh I also don't use them. But maybe the updates will bring them up to par....

The nickel and diming rages on for the lifetime users. Previously they indicated the generative tools where the updates that would be excluded, now they are clearly expanding that. The 8 pro features are basically what most of use considered to be "core" stuff that we would have seen with the old model and the promises of AI then Neo being replacement products. Those of use with lifefime, plus paid for the subscription - seems like another shakedown for money related to the "you don't get to keep it" updates unless you pony up again.

Merging layers is one of the things that reduces the chances of me using layers on an image. Exporting as a TIFF not only takes up space but it is a pain. Whilst I know and am thankful you are not one of the team (unbiased opinions are welcome), you must have the ears to help them create their to-do list. Is there any way we can help or prompt through you or even directly? Currently in Ecuador on a RTW motorcycle trip and this is the ONLY editing software I use (warts and all).
