Kind of a mish mashed video this week -- I had a few light plant chores to do before some hectic shop days so I didn't have a ton of time to film but I felt it was ~imperative~ to document the pollination of my favourite plant so I figured I'd take you along with me! I also had a couple of car chat sessions with ‪@unplantparenthood‬ because I had not seen her for an ENTIRE MONTH and we talked through some questions you guys submitted on IG complete with plenty of off topic tangents. Hope you enjoy!

Seeds from the same batch are as genetically similar as siblings to the same parents, bc an inflorescence is a cluster of many flowers and each flower has slightly different genetics in their receptive cells.... it would be like if a woman gets artificially inseminated with many eggs being available at once
@youdontevengrowhere
@youdontevengrowhere 2 ай бұрын
I should’ve clarified the question but it was whether two seeds within the same *berry* would be genetically identical - I truly have no idea!! Have you come across any info on this?
@hanniegl
@hanniegl 2 ай бұрын
Likely this would be the same as identical twins, meaning they would be genetically identical.
@pedrocarvalho6391

@@youdontevengrowhere ahhh I understand now... I don't know anything on this matter then, but as stated in other comments, it could probably be a case of identical twins, however plants have multiple more copies of the same DNA when compared to any animal alive... this helped them to better adapt to harsh and drastic environmental changes possibly beikg further exaggerated by the extinction of the dinosaurs for example.... so while both seeds might be genetically identical, I'm guessing the gene expression can still vary resulting in similar, yet different looking plants... just an assumption though to explain why the two seeds might still look different despite being identical twins 😀

I totally find when I’m anxious about over caring (repotting to soon/over watering), I also find it very soothing to just rearrange my plants 🪴, I want to always be doing something with them and I find it so soothing and relaxing to care for them. So ya I just rearrange instead of over caring for them
@SimonGStudio
@SimonGStudio 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for answering the anxiety question. It was the first answer what I meant. I’m usually patient but when I get anxious it makes me start fussing over the plants and doing stuff that ends up being unhelpful. Like trying to help leaves come out of the sheath. 99% of the time it ends in broken leaves 😂 photographs and rearranging are such smart ideas! Thanks ❤

Also for helping leaves out of the sheath thing - spraying them works for me pretty much every time! If it doesn’t work the first time within an hour or so, I leave it a few days to build pressure and usually the second spray will do the trick

1:01:26 they won't be genetically identical! a berry is a fruit, so i guess another way to ask would be, are all seeds in any fruit identical, and based on some gardening forums i'm pretty sure they aren't because the father and mother are donating their own alleles. so you can think of each anthurium berry as an individual fruit, and subsequently each fruit will have genetically diverse seeds even if there are 2 seeds. side note, apparently some anthurium species can have up to 10 seeds per berry. isnt that crazy? anyways, the montage at the beginning was soo well done and im so excited your DP is finally a mother!!

the light - north window you don't get direct sunlight at all, still bright enough to grow plants, but it's by definition "bright indirect ight" (on the northern hemisphere, but let's skip that part), east vs west - they should be the same but there is much more humidity in the air in the morning so east has weaker light, east/west vs south - it's the angle of the sun, the higher the sun is in the sky (at noon it's in the peak) the smaller the angle is so you get more light per area unit.

My house has huge east facing windows in the living room and the only plants that can survive there are cacti, succulents and hoya. Everything else will burn because the sun is on them for most of the morning and afternoon, so be aware of the direction/location of your specific house too 😅

== SUNLIGHT == -- Intensity -- I was trying to think of a good analogy. Let's say you're randomly trying to cross a mud pit that goes waist-high. The mud is thick and it's going to take a lot of effort to push through. Getting across is going to use up some of your energy. Let's say it's 10 feet of distance if you go straight across. If you go at an angle, it's 15 feet. Which approach is going to use up more of your energy? The angled approach. Which leaves you with more energy? The direct approach. In a similar way, the sunlight travels through the atmosphere (mud pit), and some of the energy is lost. It is most intense the more directly it can travel. It loses intensity at an angle. Going east and west, the sun is most intense sometime around noon (shines straight down). In the morning and evening, the sun is angled to the east or west, so it's less intense. Going north and south, the sun is most intense at the equator (shines straight down). To figure out which direction your intense light comes from, figure out which way the equator is. Way up in Canada, the equator is south, so the most intense sunlight is to the south. Down in Australia, the equator is to the north, so the most intense light is to the north. -- East vs. West Intensity -- I believe light intensity is about the same from the east and west. I could see western light affecting plants more intensely, but it might not be the light and moreso the temperature. Mornings come after everything just spent all night cooling off. Evenings come after everything spent all day warming up. Increased light and temperature can have similar effects on plants, so evening light might seem more intense than morning light. -- Sunrise and sunset -- Imagine a globe or even a basketball (earth) sitting in front of you. Shine a flashlight (sun) on it. One side of the ball is lit up (day). The back side is dark (night). If you slowly rotate the ball like a top in either direction, places that once had light go dark (sunset) and places that once were dark get light (sunrise). Whether the new light shows up from the east or west just depends on the direction of the rotation. Because Earth rotates in the direction it does, sunrise will always be to the east.

Not Charmaine saying she'd avoid south windows for anthurium, and my only windows are south facing 😂☀️plus grow lights because Nova Scotia weather sucks for 85% of the year 😂 I definitely need to move plants to different areas though.. I've had some bleaching on some anthuriums and a couple of other more sensitive types of plants.. I just have limited non-window space that will work 🥲

On the question of the seeds and being genetically the same: no. It’s the same as a litter of puppies. They are siblings, all coming from the same pool of genes but each one will have its own mix of alleles, which is why each plant grown from a seed batch will look different.
