Let the Quran Speak

6 жыл бұрын

Despite Islam's message of racial equality, black Muslims continue to experience discrimination within the Muslim community and feel excluded from mosques and Muslim organizations. What can we do to turn the tide on anti-black racism within the Muslim community? Joining me to discuss this is Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick. Dr. Quick is a Senior Lecturer at the Islamic Institute of Toronto; Head of the History Department of Al Maghrib Institute; and Outreach Coordinator for the Canadian Council of Imams. He holds a PhD in West African Islamic History from the University of Toronto.

I took Shahada with an African Imam in NYC. The big Islamic Center in Manhattan. The Imam is back African, and very friendly (although understandably quite busy). He's very tall, hard to miss! I'm white, and the center is quite mixed with Muslims from literally around the world.

This is a very informative video! As Muslims, we should always speak out against injustice and ignorance if possible; no matter how uncomfortable it makes others feel. As for those who have immediate objections to this information- ask yourself, does Dr. Quick's information coincide with the facts of history? If yes, why do you object? Are you not for truth? - Thank you Dr. Quick.

Shalom, Islam (etymological root *_SLM_* ) simply means to submit. I submit to the One True Living G*d of Israel. The LORD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob otherwise known as Avraham (Ibrahim), Yitzhak (Ishaq), and Yaacov (Yacub). I believe that Christ is the only begotten Son of G*d I believe in the the Messiah who was born of the Virgin Maryam Meriam (Mary) through the Holy Spirit of G*d sent to give up his communion with His LORD and my LORD. I believe that Jesus completely and without earthy sin, submitted His will to the Will of the Heavenly Father- His Adonai His Rabb so that we as believers are redeemed by grace through faith unto to good works. We don’t earn salvation. Indeed no amount of righteous acts are adequate but we still strive to live like HIS chosen people in faith that we may be saved from the true and fair penalty for sin: eternal separation from our Lord. I believe Messiah is coming again on the Day Judgement Day to judge the living and the dead. Yeshua (Eisa SA) intercede to Allah SWT on Yawm ad-Din in the Torah and Yawm at-Qiyamah in the Q’ran. I believe in, pray to, and worship and pray to THAT G*d. *HE who has no name and all names, blessed be HE.*

Exactly, what Dr.Quick describes can directly be traced to the lingering effects of COLONIALISM and while we Muslims can see it, it's even worse among Non Muslims and especially among people who don't belong to any religion! Naturally drug use, prostitution, murder and all sorts of crimes are worse where ever people feel like strangers within their own countries!

I have experienced this kind of racial engagement in the Nation of Dubai when i had looked at a sign, and I had realized that it was a prayer room for men of the Islamic faith, and although I did not enter the prayer , and had read, and understood what the sign had read a man of Arabic Descention was exiting the prayer room as i was reading the sign had harshly questioned me about what I was doing in front, and on the side front of the entrance/ exit door passage of the prayer room , I answered in a stern, but civil way that i had realized that i was by the prayer, but i was searching for the men rest room, but his mannerisms towards was inappropriate, and unnecessary by him, and I had realized in that moment that there was a possible colorism, and possible racism as well in many of the Islamic Nations.

Masha Allah, important topic... I am a happy listener to sheikh Hakim Quick, allways interesting and informative. Also in my city, Copenhagen Denmark,we have issues on race and nationality, sadly, I feel ashamed. People divide into groups of their own nations and make mosques. I can understand thst the the early mosques that were founded by the first emigrants in the 60ies are mostly visited by turks or pakistanies i or balkans, that was because of language and the like. But today there is no grounds for national divisions, but it is still there. I fight it in my own small way by going to a mosque that is founded, lead and used by brothers and sisters of all nationalities, turk, african, arab danish, amazighi, whatever. Alhamdulillah diversity exists.

If you think about black people, abs our history, we have either started, or have been near the very begining of so much on this planet. But over time, our contributions get diluted, changed, or omitted. Africans are some of the most spiritual, and religious people on this planet. More focused on being apart of the land, rather than building things that separate us from the land. I wish more effort would be done to show what we have done to make this world what it is today. Technology, science, medicine, agriculture, we have been instrumental in all of it
@mustaphahajji1069
@mustaphahajji1069 5 жыл бұрын
I really agree with you, you're absolutely right. I think the problem or the reason why our efforts are being omitted is because we Africans have forgotten who we used to be. We must learn to respect ourselves and rebrand ourselves, because the way we treat ourselves will set the standards of how other people will treat us. I love Africa and I believe that the future is Africa. We need to keep enlightening ourselves about our rich history.

I think the Dr is not familiar with the Somali and Ethiopian history, in particular, the Somali Bantu. I am a Somali Bantu or the so called Adon according to Some Somalis. The Somali Bantus were initially brought to Somalia by the Siyad Bare government. They were brought before that (the 19 century) by colonial powers but the majority of the Somali Bantus were later brought to Somalia by the Siyad Bare Government to help with farming and agriculture since most Somalis only rared animals and did not know how to farm or even farm. I lived in areas predominantly dominated by ethnic Somalis and I and my family we were treated good and most Somalis always helped and stood up for us. From both sides of my family; my grandparents from my dad's side came from Tanzania and my grandparents from mum's side came from Burundi. My grandfather along with other Tanzanians was brought by the Said Bare government and were givens good huge lands to farm and had support from the government. The Siyad Bare government was good to the Somali Bantus and protected them against any form of harm or harassment whether physical or discrimination and gave citizenship. I agree there is cultural racism among some Somalis but the Mosques have always denounced and outspoken against racism. The racism and the discrimination became more and more as a result of the collapse of the Siyad Barre Government. But with no state enforcement, the Mosques tried their best and continue to do so but could not and cannot eliminate the racism and the discrimination that has developed as a result of the collapse of Siyad Barre government. The mosques don't have capability or the power to counter such racism and discrimination. Only the government has power to counter and eliminate racism and discrimination. And until and unless we get a Somali a government that re-establishes anti racist laws and takes a tough stand against racism and discrimination, the Mosques alone can do nothing but only as always try their best speak out and denounce, and this will not be able to eliminate the racism and the discrimination that has developed as a result of the collapse of Siyad Barre government.

@huuya1402
@huuya1402 6 жыл бұрын
First and foremost, Somalis call and identify themselves as Somalis and the same with Habasha. Just like the Americans call and Identify themselves as Americans. As a matter of fact, we Somalis including Somali Bantu's and Ethiopians including Habasha face racism not only from Arabs but also from many others as well. There are bad apples, in other words, bad individuals in every nation and group. For this reason, I always oppose the generalisation, the smearing and the demonization of a whole nation based on what a few bad apples or bad individuals in that nation do or commit. It is imperative that the focus be on those bad individuals in every group and nation because this is the only best way to counter and eliminate those few bad ones with their bad ideas rather than generally smear and demonise the whole nation or group. As history has shown to be when you generally smear and demonise the whole nation or group based on what a few individuals in that nation or group commit, This leads to the bad apples or bad individuals in eventually gaining support from many of the good ones within that nation. So let's not generalise if we truly want to defeat and eliminate the bad apples or the bad indivduals with their bad ideas. Thanks.

Since most people in here do not know what Malcolm meant or was, I will say it here! NO, he was not a racist at his death! He made it clear that racism was illogical, but AMERICAN whites are a different breed altogether in GENERAL. Next, I am BLACK and MUSLIM and defend it to anyone. Arab racism has nothing to do with the fact that I believe in God and that the name for him is Allah. I also know that some of the greatest African empires were BLACK Muslims who were not controlled by Arabs. Black people who KNOW the TRUE history of Islam would be happy to be Muslim.

I am studying Islam as the religion at this moment, maybe with the intent to converting. I am also looking at the "culture" side of it, but only through Black people (because I am black). I know that everyone can be racist, religious or not, spiritual or not, agnostic or not blah blah. But how do someone like me, (at his moment of my life I am agnostic) separate culture from religion, the racist fromthe religion/culture??. This may sound like a dumb question...But I am reading all these comments about this is an Arab religion (which to me...I don't necessary think so{so far}...still researching however)...and how Islam was brought to Africa through slavery..and all this other stuff. I am so confused. Because the more and more I read the Quran (alone and not the hadiths), I relate to it more and more. I have this weird connection...I just don't know. Those who believe in this religion or any, like Christianity...how do you justify yourself following a religion that was spread because of slavery?

Christianity was practiced in Africa well before slavery. I know exactly what you mean. I find that Arabs tend to look down at Pakistanis and I found that there's a bit of a conflict in identity between being south Asian and being a Muslim. Islam isn't an Arab religion, it is for everyone. It speaks to me on a deep level as well as I feel that it has concrete answers for every question I have. Just remember that there is a difference between religion and cultural practices. If people actually practiced Islam properly, the concept of race would actually be eliminated.

Sister, Islam has nothing to do with slavery, though you may have people who called themselves Muslims involved. I encourage you to study the life of Bilal ibn Rabah Al-Habashi (May Allah Be Pleased With Him). He was an Abyssinian (Ethiopian) former slave who became liberated by embracing Islam and became the first Mu'Adhan (One who calls people to prayer) and was the first Treasurer of the Islamic state and Governor of Syria along with his siblings just as Sheikh Quick has mentioned. People do certain things and abuse their faith. Judge people by Al-Islam, by Al-Qur'an, not the other way around.

Interesting to hear about Islam before south Asian predominance of the religion. It was black Africans who saved the very first Muslims from death in Ethiopia.They were also instrumental in shaping and developing the religion. Yet so many Muslims don't know about the 1400 Arab slavery of Africans? It is a great shame and embarrassment to the Muslim world.

It's wonderful that the truth is finally being taught. The Muslims were suffering under the same racist ideology as those in the west. Finally the truth is being taught! We will have to struggle with the false perceptions in the Muslim world also. I pray that at least the Muslims are now learning the truth about the many African companions and tribesmen of our beloved Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) who were in key positions of leadership and scholarship during the early days of Islam. Christ says, in this world "Love your neighbour as yourself". "Love your enemies". "Bless those who curse you". "Pray for those who despitefully use you". Do these and all problems in this world disappear. Christ loves all people because He created us. So He teaches to love: not just "not hating ". But He also teaches eventual judgment against those rebellious and exploitative. "Love your enemy, bless those who curse you." But He also says " be wise as 'serpents' but innocent as doves'" So lets love but walk wisely among your enemies. I.e. "Do not cast your pearls before swine". Westerners Enslaved. Arabs and Ottomans also enslaved. So you cannot choose a faith based on resentment against the religion of your oppressor. That is a foolish choice.

I believe that the racism against Africans and African descendants is basically the same whether East or West. It is based on skin color,features and hair texture and the idea that light skin ,straight hair and keen features are superior. This is straight up modeling of white supremacy. On the contrary I can believe that SOME white people that are non middle Eastern may not be as racist,simply because once they accept Islam the white supremacy idea is flushed away for some reason. Every other group who are not of African Black heritage looks down on us,even when it is covert. Sometimes this causes many Blacks to not convert to Islam and also because of the Arab slave trade,!

The indian ocean slave trade certainly transported more people than the trans atlantic trade. Also he did not mention the Trans Saharan trade, which displaced more africans than any other slave trade. @mplsridah just some of those in the north. And in the east and south they tend to also have some East Asian ancestry. Also, ‘brown’ is an in-between shade, therefore, it can range in colours. Lighter shade of brown doesn’t always equal to a foreign origin, but some may have it.

@Midnight-og3rk 4 жыл бұрын
@mplsridah to be honest, frankly. Majority of the Indians that call themselves ‘Brahmin’ have little to no ancestry with those in Central Asia, the caucuses and parts of Europe. Dna clusters majority of south Asians with each other. The dark/medium brown indians is an accurate appearance. But there are also Indians who are Australo-Melanesian with another phenotype that also lived in South Asia and still do in some parts, with some Indians having ancestry from them also. The caste system is rampant particularly in the north, and when northern Indians say racist things about those that reside in other parts of India, they tend to say the terms ‘Australoid’ in a derogatory way, therefore implying that Australo people are also indigenous to South Asia.
