You will learn most of that you learn in college on your own. Good instructors are nice to have, especially in mathematics courses, but personal initiative can overcome a lot in the way of mediocre instruction. I've found that academic awards don't necessarily equate with the ability to teach either. The worst instructor I had hands down was a Nobel Laureate. All you really need to do is make sure the university you attend has the proper resources for you to obtain a good education in your chosen field. If you are studying in the medical field, the university needs to have a good medical center. If you are studying genetics, the university needs to have a top-notch genetics lab. And so on. That said, some people are more impressed by the name of the university on your degree than what you actually learned attending it. I hate to admit it but you are probably more likely to get a job if you went to a university that the general public thinks of as being of a higher status, whether it actually is or not.
