it's my understanding [currently taking a class on D&G with Dr. Protevi] that AO is less a critique of Lacan himself and more a critique of Lacanians. There is an anecdote that Deleuze saw him after the publication of AO, wanting to talk about what he thought of it (Guattari was too afraid to bring it to his attention) and Lacan said "If only I had more students like you!" to Gilles. So there's that...whether it's true or not, though, who knows.

The quote is believable. Over the course of analyzing this book, I came to the same conclusion. I also think the work can appear more like a critique of Lacan if one is familiar with his earlier seminars but not his later seminars.

Thanks again for this awesome video! It seems somewhat contradictory to me for Deleuze and Gattari to claim that schizo-analysis shouldn’t have an expressly political aim but simply seek to liberate and “group” the repressed desires to be expressed in the world. Isn’t any such “grouping” made by an analysand bound to be impacted and ultimately shaped by the treatment chosen by the analyst? Perhaps this is more of a question about how psychoanalysis can claim to be non-political. Which is also something Zizek expressly argues is impossible and is simply a reflection of many psychoanalysts’ refusal to engage with theory and political theory in general, and so they falsely proclaim themselves to be non-political, which usually means in effect that they support the status quo. And it seems obvious that if the aim of schizoanalysis is to help “the dominated and exploited masses,” then by definition it has a fundamental leftist political tendency whether the analysts want to accept/admit it or not. But I also get that it might be more convenient for the analyst’s career purposes and-or more conducive to the psychoanalytic process for an analyst to claim to be non-political for clinical or business purposes. I’m just saying it seems to be logically impossible and hides a lot of the underlying contradictions within the field of psychoanalytic practice today. Specifically, a widespread disavowal of the inescapable social and political nature of any psychoanalytic treatment, and as such a refusal to take responsibility for that and to learn more about political theory.

hey SaS do you have any plans to talk about the relationship between phenomenology/psychoanalysis and theology? have you seen Richard Boothby’s new book?

between phenomenology and theology - absolutely, especially as we get to figures associated with the theological turn in phenomenology. Between psychoanalysis and theology - perhaps but its tricky because of a tendency for the engagement to become reductionist…Marcus Pound is one of the few to do justice to both disciplines. perhaps a special series at some point but nothing concrete planned at this time. As for bringing all three together, that is the heart of my own research but would have to lay a good deal of ground work before it would make sense to bring all three together in any coherent fashion on this platform. I hadn’t seen Boothsby’s new book but bought it as soon as you brought it to my attention. he is perhaps my favorite Lacan scholar.

@@SingularityasSublimity i don’t think Boothby is the deepest Lacan scholar, but that’s partly cos i come at it from a more clinical perspective, at least atm. i think he’s certainly one of the best writers and his phenomenological readings were very formative for me. his recent Blown Away was also incredibly moving, and very readable if you don’t mind crying

that makes sense re: your view on Boothsby. I would not recommend him for those with a clinical orientation (Fink is probably the gold standard in that domain). As for Pound, his one book on the subject is Theology, Psychoanalysis and Trauma. His showing the intimate connection between Kierkegaard and Lacan as particularly insightful

Its a good question. Its not entirely clear to me whether there is some irony there or merely an earnest attempt at a language they believe to overcome what they critique. If you haven’t listened to Todd McGowan’s take on this in his podcast Why Theory - might be worth checking out as I think speaks to this issue as well.

It makes sense to me that they are using historical metaphors appropriate for each kind of society and it’s dominant machine. So of course in modern capitalist society machines and computer coding are the dominate model of signification, while they use the despot machine to signify feudal societies and so on.
