After the move Bxc3 Ivan Sokolov tweeted that "If this decision is good for Black, I need to learn chess again. Geller is probably turning in his grave.." Just tells you how much this game has evolved with introduction of engines.

As for Geller, Maybe an engine can dust off his ultra-aggressive 7...Qf6 vs Fischer in a Ruy Lopez opening. Fischer's 22 move mini is still considered full refutation.

@RaniaIsAwesome Fabi must have checked this line (which is much rarely played) thoroughly with engines and come up with a plan against a strong player like Wojtaszek because he much must have found it to be working for him. And even keeping this match aside, yes introduction of engines has changed the dynamics of the game. That remains the truth irrespective of this game.

Actually in the interview he said " I didn't know if 13…Bxc3 was correct in this position, but I'd seen it in some similar positions where White can't really free himself" which implies that it was actually not completely prepared, but found over the board. But it is true that his preparation is just out of the world. In fact, when Peter Svidlver, Jan Gustaffson and Lawrence Trent were ranking the preparation of the players in the candidates tournament, they gave Fabiano the second highest score(just behind Giri).

I dusted off "Lasker's Manual of Chess" and decided to read it right from beginning to end. Yes, including the very basics. Lasker has a way of speaking to you right from the grave in this book. Lasker was also criticized (notably by Tarrasch) of making an anti-positional moves from time to time. I've really become quite fascinated by Lasker recently. His philosophy on chess is so profound. I firmly believe, that if you are a beginner and study Lasker's words and strategems, you will be a very difficult opponent to beat. Lasker's standing among the greats of chess should never be understated.

I assume part of the problem is you can play differently in a 1v1 series than in a tournament. Preparation is more specific and there is no fear of falling behind by drawing while someone else manages to win their match. I imagine those 2 things combine and make is so that Magnus is even harder to beat than normal if he is content with draws as OT favors him.

I think the reason Caruana played this is because he wanted to play Ne5 with either of his knights. If you think about this you can see that with his knight being on e5 his bishop would be blocked, so not so impressive anymore. Furthermore Wojtaszek's knight could go Nd5 and it would be really hard to get rid of. So by playing Bxc3 Caruana actually solved both problems.

Fabiano Caruana must have a very powerful engine at home, because I let Stockfish on my phone analyze the position at move 13, and it recommended knight c5 instead.

After Bg4, it would have been interesting to see what Fabi had prepared against dxe5 which now seems to win a pawn.

fabi is by far my favorite player in the classical format. He prepares so well but isnt afraid to try novel ideas.

I was thinking that knight to d3 would achieve the same result as knight to c4. Knight to d3 would also attack the bishop and clear the way for the rook to come to e1. I'm not a grandmaster, though.

About ending. Why it's lost if you lose that rook on d1? You will have rook and two bishops vs two rooks, and you can start picking those scary pawns with your second rook while also preventing black from queening. So why is this losing?
