IDK how I haven't come across your channel before, but I just subscribed. So many good recs here! I'm intrigued about the Martha Waters series being similar to Tessa Dare, but I'm generally wary of historicals with the cartoon style covers.

Hopefully the new Nevermoor book releases next year. I know it's been delayed. Most Middle Grade Fantasy isn't working for me, but I really enjoy that series. I really love these videos and get a lot of great books on my radar. I hadn't heard of a lot of those mysteries and put them on my library notification tag. The Medieval Travel Guide is also up my alley as well and never would have found it without this video. My most anticipated 2024 release is Stormlight Archive Book 5, but I need to reread the entire series. That gives me roughly 12 months to read 5000+ pages lol.

So many of these sound good! I'm also looking forward to Island Witch by Amanda Jayatissa (sounds like it's going to be a witchy, gothic mystery) and Ghost Station by SA Barnes (she wrote Dead Silence, the first 2/3 of which was 5 stars; hoping she sticks the landing better on this one 😅).

Hi Mara! Just a little note that there are some delightful books you might like already out there just like the last book you listed. A Time Traveller’s Guide to Medieval England and it’s sequel, A Time Traveller’s Guide to Elizabethan England by Ian Mortimer. It’s exactly like you said- what would a modern person see, hear, smell, etc if they were dropped into those times. I really enjoyed them both, and I even ordered the UK editions just cuz I think they’re prettier! He’s also done Regency, but I haven’t read that one.

Even counting sequels and authors I've read from before I'm not seeing a lot of book I want to pre-order and not really finding anything new. Don't know if it is post-pandemic stuff, publishing industry changing or just me. But even looking through the Goodreads awards this year left me very underwhelmed, but usually I'll want to pick up a few books from each genre. I think I found one or two books in total that wasn't already on my TBR. So maybe it is just me 🤷♀

So glad to see some love towards Myrkrið á milli stjarnana (e. The Night Guest - don't really like the english name, the Icelandic one means "The Darkness between the Stars" which sounds more eerie). It is one of my favourite modern Icelandic horror stories. Very reminiscent of our folklore. I didn't even know they had translated it, hope the translation is well done and that you enjoy it.

oh, a retelling of „the goose girl“! i will have to read that. „the goose girl“ was my favorite fairy tale growing up, despite the upsetting thing with the something that ends up being a thing (this is as precise as i can get without spoilers). the idea of a love between human and aforementioned something being so strong it practically bypasses death blew my mind as a child. and i‘m already looking forward to all your reviews of the mysteries you‘ve mentioned today. just a few days ago i read „the woman in the library“ and really liked it, so i‘ll definitely pick up her new book. roxanne gay is an auto-buy for me, as is simone st. james and j.d. robb (despite being sooo far behind in the series - by the time i‘ve caught up LaNora will have written her 150th entry, i‘m sure…). the romance by an idigenous author published by a main stream publishing house will hopefully have an e-book edition. otherwise it‘ll be almost impossible to get my greedy mittens on it here in tiny-town austria. new year - new books - new review videos and reading vlogs - it‘s all good. happy reading! monica

Have you seen Voyage of the Damned? It’s an isolated setting murder mystery where all the suspects have magic. I know it’s going to be in a couple book boxes and I’m really looking forward to that one! T Kingfisher also has her 4th Paladin book coming out next year. I’m also looking forward to Alexandra Rowland’s new book (Running Close to the Wind - pirate fantasy romance), all of TJ Klune’s releases (Heartsong, Brothersong and Somewhere Along the Sea), Jen DeLuca’s new romance, Sarah Hogle’s new romance, and Danielle Jensen’s new series (Fate Inked In Blood). Also looking forward to the conclusions of Tasha Suri’s Burning Lands trilogy and Tamsyn Muir’s Locked Tomb quartet!!! I agree that there aren’t as many new authors this year that I am interested in (yet!) but it seems to be a year where A LOT of my favs are publishing. And since, in 2023 I read a lot of disappointing debuts, I’m ok with that!!

I've not looked into new releases much lately. Great lost. I don't think you mentioned this, so sorry if i missed it, but The Night Guest by Hildur Knutsdottir is coming out (translated by Mary Robinette Kowal). Not entirely sure the genre. I think it is soemwhere beteen horror-mystery. My Interest mostly comes from MRK being sttached as shes a fav of mine.

Excited for What Feasts at Night. Loved the 1st in that series. The Mystery Writer sounds promising too. Ditto for She Left, How to Solve Your Own Murder and Antiquer's Guide to Mystery-they all sound right up my alley. Plus, we're getting another Mercedes Thomas from Patricia Briggs and a totally new first in series from Ilona Andrews and also the second installment in the Hugh series, finally. Lindsey Buroker has a new trilogy (2 are already out and we finish it up next year-excited about that). I think we're getting Yard Bird and Grey Witch installments from Hailey Edwards-enjoy both of those series, especially Yard Birds-think Golden Girls but they're witches. I love Grady Hendrix's Tone too-his 80's references and humor really work for me. So The How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive is on my ever growing TBR now. Have to add the P. Djeli Clark too-love his stuff. The Last Murder At the End of the World has been made into a TV series too.

What does Meta mean?
@desireemclaughlin1455 Жыл бұрын
When something is described as meta, it’s something that is self referential/self aware. Breaking the fourth wall is an example of metafiction. In the book she was referring to when she was talking about it being meta, the protagonist talks to the reader as if he’s fully aware he’s a book character. He says things like, “So-and-so’s murder isn’t happening until page 149.”

I was not a fan of no one can know. It's just was different from her other books and was more of a classic psychological thriller than the creepy weirdness Kate Alice Marshall normally writes. I really hope the new nevermore Morrigan Crow book comes this year. One of my favorite series of all time!
