At KUMC during the 90's we used TIPS early in the progress of disease when portal hypertension complications first emerged, and largely prevented PVT through that early intervention. In non-cirrhotic PVT we used a TIPS-like (trans jugular trans hepatic) approach for intra-portal and intro-SMV thrombolysis with urokinase or TPA.
