I've been slowly tapering off of Lexapro for 2 years, and am still having a rough time with it. I'm still not completely off. The health profession needs to really address this issue. These drugs are really hard to get off of, and many doctors are way to liberal with prescribing these.

Exactly . I've been on zoloft six months and tapering for four from 50 . I'm down to 5 mg and the last bit is so hard . I had so many side effects and withdrawal with this poison I wish I'd never started it . I wish I'd anything I'd started Prozac as had no problems with that years ago . My GP said I wouldn't get withdrawal ! This stuff is legal yet I use kratom to help me and it's illegal.

My withdrawal symptons have been nausea, fatigue, headaches, "brain fog", brain "zaps", difficulties to focus and insomnia. Also feeling really emotional. Still trying to push through tho.. Been on these meds for 5 years, coming down gradually and finally came off completely like 2 weeks ago. I absolutely hate these withdrawals and i'm so pissed off by the fact doctors don't even tell about these symptoms before starting the medication. I wish i never took these meds! 🤦‍♀️😑

@@bridarby2299 Hi, unfortunately i did not succeed to quit the medicine totally. My dose was only 0,25mg per day for over 6 months, then tried to quit totally. After 2 weeks my withdrawal symptoms went REALLY bad... i started to think about killing myself and having extremely bad anxiety and depression. I did not see any good anywhere at any times and that was the worst feeling ever... it was like i was in a black endless hole without any hope. I began to take the medicine again and now i'm at 0,5mg dose which is obviosly more than before so i am really really disappointed BUT i'm back being "happy" and being "myself" again, maybe... but the darkness is gone. Still, i wonder almost daily do i really have to take this medicine all my life just because i cannot handle the withdrawals?!

Right now I’m 16 and remember this my old doctor now ONLY gave me meds for not focusing in school she is a piece of sh**t prescribed me Zoloft “sertraline” for 7 years since I was 9 and every doctor appointment I had she would just UP my meds so as they years and time went on the drug made me more and more anxious so I ended up taking 100 mg of zoloft DAILY for 7 years one day I ended up in the psych ward because I ended up jumping out the car as we rolled up to the hospital and all these mf cops came out of no where with there lights on and said to me if I don’t go inside the hospital they might have to use physical force and detain me and throw me in there. So they threw me in there and I was not allowed out and had to lay on a hospital bed for 3 hours with a lady next to me with basically her face cut off and I’m jus like wtf is this moral of the story they threw me in the psych ward for 24 hours and at the time I was really anxious and paranoid just being there. So first thing they did was throw the meds in my face and said take em and I said he’ll nah, but after a while I was like well it’s only one I’m really anxious let’s try it, no!!!! It sent me into full out panic depression and now I haven’t took it in 4 weeks and my parents both lost there jobs so I’m stuck with no antidepressants and I have HPPD, visual snow syndrome, insomnia, PTSD, anxiety, ADHD, depression, and this all came from psychosis and the meds have low key fucked me up for ever and I think I might have tinnitus have insane ringing in my ears. Wanna put a bullet to my head. And yes I’m 16 btw love my life!

You say that we should expect withdrawal effects, as if this is common knowledge. We go to doctors for this information and they are not providing it upfront. It's also not being included in the warnings, like side effects are. This needs to be looked at for customer safety. I had bad side effects to my antidepressant, was weaned off and now am going through horrible withdrawal that I never anticipated. Had I been warned of this, I might of made a different decision.

This was very helpful. I tried to taper off an antidepressant (escitalopram) over two weeks. When I completely stopped, I was fine for a week, and relieved, thinking I was successful. But then I got so sick! Extreme anxiety like I’ve never experienced before, extreme depression, bouts of crying, etc. The most horrid thing about it was, I thought it was my “normal” depression that had surfaced again, and was extremely defeated and alarmed by that thought…I didn’t realize they were withdrawals. After two weeks of hell I began taking bupropion which has helped (it doesn’t cause weight gain like escitalopram) but the side effects of beginning that medication are still troubling me. Now I know that when tapering off, I should expect to do so over the course of months (some have even told me it could take more than a year in their experience). This video helped immensely, because it makes me realize I am not alone - thank you. I’d also like to mention that in addition to medication, pursuing therapy and counselling is important, especially for people who have struggled a lot with major life events/traumas.

I feel anxious, paranoid, tired yet manic, and I feel like a fog has come over me and I can't connect with the world around me. I quit paxil and risperdal cold turkey 2.5 years ago and the neuro-anger is one of the worst symptoms for me. To have such a hypervolatile nervous system depletes the limited amount of energy I have. Trying to calm the internal alarm system is a 24/7 job and the pay is minimal. Typing this is already strenuous on my nerves. I will never know how I would feel if I had tapered slowly. I was sick and tired of being on drugs for 23 years and did not want to take them one more day. Let alone some tapering can take years. I have no patience for that. The rest of my life will have one goal and that is to try as many available options to reach a calm regulated state. I do not regret quitting for in hindsight I was still depressed on meds, just a little zombiefied. Which makes it hard to start working on the root causes of the depression because you're kind of numb and not care enough to put serious effort in improving the situation for the pills put a damper on it all (both good and bad) At least that is my personal experience. To people happily on meds I say more power to you, do what feels right for you. I felt like 80% of me was hiding in some closet while on meds, just to walk the world in a socially acceptable way while me being miserable and totally disconnected from self. Good luck to all who are going through withdrawal, and if you have been through withdrawal and successfully 'made it to the other side', please share your story for hope and inspiration. 🙏 ✌️

When I'm confortable at home though I feel better and am able to enjoy myself a bit. When I'm outside around plp all I want is to go back home because it overwhelms me. I'm doing ok, I do have support from my husband and 8 children, they know why sometimes I'm snappy and emotional.. We've made it 3 weeks thus far.... very thankful to be able to feel again.... definitely not for everyone. I would have tapered had I done the research, were so darn stubborn though so if the Dr told me to taper I probably wouldn't have...

I think the biggest mistake that people and general practitioner doctors make when planning for a patient to come off antidepressants is that antidepressant medications should only be reduced to a maximum of 10% per month of stated daily dose... and that is the maximum!!! Some people may require to reduce even slower than that... like 5% reduction per month. And from my understanding, the final reduction phase (the last 10%) is the most difficult of all with addiction specialists recommending even as low as 2% reduction rate per month for the final 10% of stated daily dose. It is an extremely tedious and slow process. Personally I've reduced too quickly on two occasions and had to return to stated daily dose for a while with a view to making a second attempt.

Survivor of Protracted Acute Withdrawal syndrome here 👋🏻 It’s been 3.7 years after my doctor took me off Cymbalta way too fast. The first year was hell. I was left with ibs and still have some other little things going on. Healing takes along time. Good luck everyone. Don’t rely on your Doctor because they have zero clue on slow, safe tapering plans. When I was Injured I decided to investigate 12 GP,s and 12 Pharmacist. I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed I am in what I discovered 😣

Same here. Everything I know about antidepressants, withdrawal, tapering, withdrawal syndrome and akathisia I learned through my own research. Unfortunately I learned everything after I started suffering from acute withdrawal syndrome and akathisia for two years. ( Cymbalta is the offending drug). The whole time I was suffering from horrific symptoms my Psychiatrist and PC were clueless. They wanted to put me on more antidepressants and benzos. I had to tell THEM what I was suffering from when I figured it out. They still will not acknowledge my akathisia. I am completely amazed at how clueless and ignorant these doctors are. They are so quick to prescribe this poison but have no idea the damage they can do. I hope you have continued to heal. I still have a long road ahead of me.

Now I’ve gone from 50mg to 25mg over a month and I’m staying on 25mg and it’s still bad. I plan to stay on 25mg for at least three or maybe up to 6 months. I literally went into my doctor and said I had anxiety and they gave me Zoloft which is for depression and anxiety. There were a load of other less serious drugs I could have taken but they skipped right to an SSRI. Yes it helps my anxiety but it numbs everything. I hardly feel much emotion at all.

Its worth mentioning though that Xanax should only be taken short term and as needed as benzos generally can be addictive. A lot of people swear by CBD too to help ease the symptoms of withdrawal aside from its many other benefits. I believe the problem lies within the fact that taking the anti-depressant hides or shadows the primary problem. I really do understand thinking there is no where to turn and that you have no choice. I took Citalopram for 2 years due to severe ptsd from a really bad 10 year relationship. when I (subconsciously did not want to take pills anymore) but, forgot to take the medication for 3 days due to life going faster than normal. Every 20-30 seconds it feels like going over a speed bump and you hit your head on the roof of a car. After so long taking the Citalopram, it feels scary and good at the same time 😐.

PK Sharma, Take a medicine that suits you after consulting the right physicians. Medication takes time to act. Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Feel the stillness flow within you. Make it a daily habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

This is really late but most symptoms should be gone in 2 weeks. Some stay for the long term like sexual dysfunction, sleep issues, weight gain etc. If you're experiencing symptoms that make it difficult to function/ live your life, you shouldn't take it. It's not worth it. There are similar meds that will give the same effect without the adverse side effects. Sometimes it takes trial and error to find ones that work but I personally don't think they're worth it unless they really improve your life. Therapy + dealing with the causes of your distress is better in the long run

Shades, Sooner or later AD has major side effects. Develop your mental muscles. I transformed my life some years back. After 10 days of doing the simple meditation which I have explained below reduce medicine mg to the minimum, then take alternate days and after 25 days of daily meditation stop medication as the brain gets re-programmed but for SOS keep the medicine with you. Your breath is directly related to your mind causing anxiety-stress. For a relaxed life without anxiety-stress sit on a chair, back and spine as erect as possible, hands on your lap with palms upwards, close your eyes, be still and observe your incoming--outgoing breath, body sounds and body sensations for around 10-20 minutes. Be as still as possible. Plenty of thoughts will come which is ok--slowly negative thoughts will reduce. The mind is slowly reprogrammed to relax. Stop watching negative TV shows. Do the above meditation twice daily without any doubts and your life will transform. Enjoy meditating daily. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

I had a nurse tell me I shouldn’t be withdrawing and I was like “shouldn’t be withdrawing my butt, lady! How do you even have a license? You’ve clearly never taken an antidepressant.” Of course I didn’t say this to her but I wanted to!! The whole point was to switch to something better working and a better fit for my genes after taking a GeneSight test. I’m trying Viibryd as of now.

Was on Lexapro 11 weeks, first person said to go from the 7.5 to 5mg for 2 weeks, then to 2.5 for two weeks, then zero. I read in a group that slower taper than this is needed. Then the next Practitioner said ( since I was on 5 now), to just stop taking it😮😮😮😮NOT...I got liquid and doing 5% taper every two weeks

Ssri meds are so bad for you if you want to try and get off then I’ve taken at least 4 different kinds (lexapro Prozac and 2 others I can remember the name of) but lexapro is so hard to come off I’ve been feeling like I’m dying almost everyday for over 2 weeks now I sleep way too much and I only took it because of anxiety that I could have easily overcame on my own but I was so stressed out due to many life changes that I felt the need to get help and ssri medication was not the help I needed.

Being a 32 year old woman, I'm at a point in life where I'm starting to think about having kids and I've been addicted to and successfully prevailed over booze, nicotine, pot, opiates but Lexapro is the one drug I'm afraid of getting off of... because of the horror stories about quitting anti-depressants.

After 10 years on citalopram I have decided to come off of 40mg of citalopram and after 3 weeks I feel my sex drive returning and feel more energetic. I no longer feel depressed or anxious however I do feel very angry and aggressive. I'm not in any way physically aggressive but I am aware that my mood has changed and I am hoping this symptom will settle down. I also feel a bit kind of dizzy or floaty at times. Again I think it's just going to take a while for my brain to get back to normal. I am absolutely determined though that im never going back to taking the meds.

I recently discontinued with my medicine. I was using mirtazapine, used it for almost 4 months.the medicine is comparatively good with very few side effects but the weight gain and the feeling of sedated all the time was too much for me. one week it has hard for me, without the meds , to fall asleep was impossible . I am still struggling with symptoms like insomnia, headache, brain fog etc despite all these the good thing is I feel natural, content hopeful , there is clarity .
