Psychology is in crisis owing to the pernicious influences of celebrity and money.
Scientists are claiming expertise when and where they have none.
Many are "massaging" the results of experiments (replication crisis).
Making unfounded claims based on flimsy or non-existent evidence
Abusing their authority.
Molecular Biology fundamentalists (Sapolsky BOOK) are grandiose and grossly misleading, I cringe.
Some of the problems: correlation not causation, reductionism and ignorance (empathy not narcissism), contradictory results, not enough known, environmental triggering (nurture, not nature), replicability issues, inflated ill-founded claims.
Examples: antidepressants and DSM.

Yes 🙌 thank you for always speaking the truth . I was on antidepressants for 8 years and finally I said screw this , this has done nothing good for me . The only time there was ever a difference in my depression was directly related to my circumstances /diet/ environment and absolutely nothing to do with those evil pills .

SSRI's have terrible side effects; they actually make suicidal ideation much worse and make an individual much more likely to act on it because they also contribute to impulsive behavior. I've never seen anyone (not even myself) get any better by those meds, what happens is that when someone experiences bad side effects, the doc will say "you have not found the right one for you" and prescribe another brand. A few close friends of mine have gone through years of experimentation by docs who prescribe one after another and they never get any better. I dont understand how this sham is allowed to continue.

I know people, which it works for and they wouldn't be alive without it. There are a lot of people it works for and a lot it doesn't. The stats are there. But for me I had the exact side effects you describe and it made me worse than I did before. So I went on my own journey experimenting with many different substances, exercising and emersing in nature. I'm in a much better place now. (time has also helped). My point is no two people are the same and what helps them, but exercise and nature are proven to improve everybody's mental state. The problem about depression though is the no motivation to do anthing. So getting past the challenges faced while exercising and improving fitness can be a nightmare. But behind those barriers, is a much greener world. Anyway I hope you are doing better!

Zoloft caused me serious problems, as the discontinuation was brutal. It always caused me suicidal ideation, and put 20lbs on me. After stopping it gradually, I dropped that weight, and I went into an extreme form of menopause. My doctor, who always had pharma reps hanging out at his office, refused to refer me to a gynecologist, and gave me samples of anti-psychotics, which made me truly insane. I finally got to a gynecologist, got HRT, & the menopausal symptoms resolved. I also learned, later, that I have COTSD, not depression. The anxiety and depression, and self-destructive compulsions, could not be resolved by a drug. I did some research, found out about cognitive behavioral therapy, and worked hard at it. I still work hard at it, on my own. I have to, and I’m lucky to have some tools to deal with it. CPTSD is a lifelong struggle, and medication will not cure it.

Reminds me of a doctor explaining to me that antidepressants do not cause weight gain, but improved mood just makes people "regain appetite." Also, doctor explaining that antidepressants are just temporary, " to get you a reset." I know some people's lives are so much better after getting on the right med, but I definitely believe they are over-prescribed, and often upon a health practitioner's first encounter with a new patient.

Add into that the efficiency computers and software offer to a business and you have a lot of people who basically go into work in the morning, do maybe an hour of actual work, and otherwise just loaf around and look busy for the rest of the day.

Years ago a friend taking antidepressants attempted suicide. He stayed in the mental ward for a couple weeks. Years later he decided to stop taking the antidepressants. He ended up happier & healthier. Another friend was prescribed antidepressants after a false bipolar diagnosis. The prescription completely lowered his energy level. He wisely stopped taking the antidepressants...20 years later he is a husband, father and independent contractor. These are the only 2 cases I know however others have shared their horrible experiences with antidepressants.

Psychiatry will not put Complex PTSD into the DSM because it would reduce it to the size of a pamphlet. For instance, OCD is a behaviour to self soothe, it is a response to a trauma experienced. Whether the person remembers the trauma or not, there will have been a trigger. Behaviours that are problematic or on the extreme end of a spectrum abs are classified as "Personality disorders", as if there is a flaw in the individual, are adaptations by the brain to survive and to protect the individual from further trauma. If Complex PTSD was properly listed in the DSM we would begin to understand that peoples brains, through necessity, have adapted due to their trauma experiences. If psychiatry understood that then they could start to help people instead of labelling them as if they are flawed. They are not. But then that wouldn't be profitable, would it!

PSSD. Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction. Can also be caused by antipsychotics, as it was in my case. Prognosis in general is zero recovery and there are many who have had zero improvements after 10 or 20 years or more. It's living in a nightmare every single day. It's been 3 years for me since developing PSSD and almost 3 years since I stopped taking all pharmaceuticals. No improvements. I thought I had problems before. To me, this disability makes depression look like a joke. And I am not dismissive of depression at all. Near lifelong sufferer of "mental illness" here and can empathize more than most. I mean that now that I have to live with this for the rest of my life, it makes the problems I had before seem much more manageable than they did at the time. Hindsight is always 20/20, as they say. I had a lot of great results with Robert Smith's "Eutaptics" work many years ago, simply studying it and using it on myself and others. This news about serotonin only highlights the lack of knowledge these people have about the substances they're prescribing. No doubt depression can have physiological causes, but electrolyte deficiency and imbalances (mineral deficiencies and imbalances) can play a large role there. General nutrition along with appropriate mineral supplementation based on hair and blood testing is undoubtedly a safer route. Mental health must be considered holistically. The tragedy with these psychiatric medications is they can strip people of their humanity. I'm still hoping I can recover, but it feels like these drugs permanently robbed me of a part of my soul. I don't feel like a real human being anymore, almost more like a collection of parts, after the PSSD set in and appears to be here to stay. The mind and body can heal given the proper tools and materials. The internal and external environments of an organism need to both be conducive to growth and progression and creativity. Imperfections will always exist in each. Adaptability is life. But when stressors overcome an organism's ability to adapt, well, that's where the real problems start. The internal structure of the organism can start to break down. Repeated stress that we can't adapt to is not good. Instead of pushing drugs, these professionals should be asking what those repeated stresses are for the individual, and how to help them adapt or eliminate them altogether. I'm a firm believer that this can be done without medication. And I've been on many, SSRI's, antipsychotics and anxiolytics alike. Imagine what all that drugging does to an already traumatized child's brain. It is horrific but I also am a believer in the human spirit and I never want to share my experiences in a way that discourages anyone. It's bad. But we have to push forward regardless. Or at least I will. I can't speak for anyone else but I believe in struggling to find solutions and meanings, especially when things seem hopeless.

I was hoping with your IQ and authority, you'd be able to provide useful insight into the condition and bring awareness. Discussing the severity of it, the suicides, Benzodiazepine and SSRI induced Akathisia, Jordan B Peterson being put into a coma for it, how it can be treated, and how these medications cause Akathisia? I suffer immensely from these medications. I'm being tortured from severe Akathisia and the medical field is ignorant of the condition. It's absurd how little they understand it and how much they neglect to acknowledge the condition while people are dying from it. The research is limited, I've witnessed too many people harmed by it. I don't want to die. Thank you for your consideration.

When a child has been traumatized/gone through narcissistic abuse, can the behaviors of said child manifest in what seems to be something like autism but is actually just C-PTSD? Primarily the social effects, not wanting to interact with other children, lack of eye contact. Which follows into my other question, what is the main determining factor in not being able to remember childhood? Would trauma occuring in childhood resulting in C-PTSD be a main factor? Or can it just be as simple as "a lot of normal people can't remember their childhood?"

@coreyjblock

I’ve heard a lot of hypothesis on PSSD. The one that makes the most sense is that it’s a lot of compensatory mechanisms that were built by your body/brain during the process of taking an SSRI that are continued after. A main compensatory mechanism being hyper clearance of serotonin from the synapse. This makes sense because if the reuptake pump is inhibited you have to clear serotinin somehow, so your brain gets very good at it through enzyme activity and other means. This isn’t very good of course when you stop the SSRI and your levels of serotonin in the synapse take a nosedive. Another is a severe lack of reserve tryptophan (the molecular precursor to serotonin). This makes sense because if you have enough serotonin floating around in the synapse your brain would be less likely to store reserve tryptophan or serotonin (and may be less able to due to blocking reuptake). Also, desensitized serotonin receptors due to unnatural amounts of serotonin in the synapse likely may also be a factor. Either way, I’m definitely no scientist, psychiatrist, or doctor. Just someone who’s also dealt with post SSRI issues. As Dr. Vaknin said, the brain is far too complex to understand at this point and anyone who claims they’ve figured it out…is plain wrong. Humility is the answer.

Thank you Professor Sam. Do you have any experience with Sound Therapy? Not this one where anybody makes a weekend training without any further knowledge.

Please keep talking about the edgy subjects such as psychedelics. f what the so called scientific elitist psychopaths have to say, they all play with each other’s private parts behind closed doors

I have the dsm 4 and 5. I used to read it because I get bored. I was thinking that EVERYONE is mentally ill and unstable according to the dsm. It didn't make sense until I followed the money... too funny.

The problem I have for SSRI's they are treated as a panacea for various mental disorders. How can one pill treat completley different symptoms. Of course some people have success with SSRI's and make their life more manageble. But there needs to be some completely new medications and treatments brought to the market. So people can find something which works for them. Not Zoloft for depressions, Zoloft for Anxiety, Zoloft for OCD. It's good to see psilocybin being trialed, hopefully that will be legally prescribed soon. Exercise and nature are key for me and something everyone should be doing for their own mental state.

Thank you.. My doctor put me on SSRI‘s Effexor about 7 years ago. I was depressed and in pain. I now know that it was narcissist abuse from my covert narc husband I was with for almost 38 years. I had many health issues over the years. Was on Prozac and other meds over the years. I beat cancer twice. I think I have CPTSD. And or I‘m a codependent. I’m Way to emotional, my covert narc degraded me many years ago, and then discarded me in an horrible way in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. Verbal abuse and craziness you wouldn’t believe me. I need help, and it‘s Not SSRI‘s.. How can I get off of the Effexor? Safely? Thank you … been in Divorce court for 2 years already, they keep canceling it, because he comes up with crazy stuff. I can’t even get a Divorce because of his narc mind. When? How? He left me alone in a country I didn’t grow up in. My kids are older and live in DC. I was born and raised in Europe. He swept me off as a young women, and I spent 38 years in the military with him. Traveling between Europe and the USA where I reside alone now. Been texting him for over 2 years, NO answer yet. I have NO idea what I did wrong.

You did nothing wrong it’s him. First I’d stop texting him and I’d begin to Really study the Professors pod cast and read whatever you can get your hands on of his books. I’d advise you to be choosy as to who you listened to as well, because once you begin your studying you can become easily overwhelmed and confused. At least I was as there’s a lot of charlatans on the web. I to am a product of brutal narcissistic abuse, but only for 3 years before he left me for a woman 33 years his junior he left me living on a mountain with two dogs and a cat! I can barely speak any Spanish and I’m living in Mexico. I could write a book things are that bizarre. Good luck with your studies and I know somehow we’ll both be okay.
