Burnside's Battle of Antietam didn't end on the banks of Antietam Creek, in fact, his IX Corps nearly made it into the town of Sharpsburg! So fortunate to have walked the Bloody Road, the cornfield, the Bridge, the Church..... It was drizzling during our time there, as it was during the battle coinciding with that date of the battle...eerie. Sad...deep feelings for those who fought, and spilled blood.

Gary, that green (or blue) water bottle that you picked up at 16:30 is sitting on the ground outside the observation tower on the sunken road. Just saw it there yesterday. Stared at it for a bit due to all the stickers, and here it is in the video recommended by KZbin. I’m guessing someone in your party left it. Lol. Side note: you guys do an amazing job of brining these battles home to us, and explaining what happened so that we can have some sense of the what occurred here, and the enormous loss of life sustained. The knowledge and insight you bring to us never fails to amaze me. Thanks for everything you guys do!

I truly appreciate your videos and they had a true effect on me. I have a BA in Early Modern European History and as such did not focus much on the civil war, especially in military histories, but you truly present them in a way deep enough and yet plain enough, straight forward yet impactful enough, to push me to join the trust and invited others that I know are not aware of it to do so. I have been there. July 1, 1987. I was out there with a video camera. The tornado that hit Herr's Ridge McPherson's Ridge. A rainstorm hit as i was walking around where you are now I asked and directed my parents to drive there and for me to see it.

The Zouave units in the American Civil War named themselves in honor of elite historical French Zouaves, and they considered themselves also to be elite, but their "eliteness" wasn't derived from their own performance, but the performance of the French units they named themselves after. Which basically means they weren't elite, but just thought highly of themselves.

@@greenriverviews6819 Not even them. Hard fighters, yes. Elite in the classic sense? Probably not. And their unique uniforms didn't last long, either. By the time of the Battle of Antietam, they would've mostly looked like every other soldier in the Confederate ranks, with perhaps a few articles left over here and there. Those fancy uniforms were simply impossible for the CSA to replenish, and they wore out quite quickly.

Isn't that geological area a definition of kettle moraine? Or no? Observation: POV camera lenses make it hard for your audience to visually range distances. Love your pointing 360° approach to integrate battlefield positions, but to feel the soil under your feet? Man! That one really got me because the shed blood of brothers really does cry out from the ground.

I noticed in the video and the few times I’ve been there that the Rodman mortuary monument is not placed on the spot or near the spot where he was mortally wounded. It says on the monument that he was wounded 265 yards south of the monument. Why is the monument to his wounded not placed on that spot instead of where it’s at now at the Hawkin’s Zouaves monument? Is the site on private land, and if it is, is it in the field that’s surrounded by Branch Ave to the east and south and by the Harpers Ferry Road to the west? Tom Clemens also says he was mortally wounded within the confederate lines and had to b carried off the field to the rear where he expired that evening. From all the sources I’ve read and on the mortuary cannon itself, it says he was mortally wounded some 265 yards south of the monument and he past away nearly 10 days later on the 30th of September. Would that place his wounding in the field I mentioned above that you all are trying to acquire for the Trust?

Love Dennis, but I strongly disagree with his view on the 1973 house. If the house is occupied, that is someone's home. If the time comes and it is available, then sure, let's make it happen. But someone's life is in that house and for it to be whittled down to an eye sore is narrow-minded.

I enjoyed this video but I was very put off by the fella railing against the 1973 house in the background. That house is probably home to a fine multigenerational family that farms and tends that land. If I lived there I would be offended by his remarks - in fact, I’m offended on behalf of that family. Also I’m embarrassed for the Battlefield Trust that this bully is representing your organization. While preserving battlefields to honor the dead is important, reclaiming the land for the living is as important in my view. Shameful to attack that family with such hostility.

There is no justification for this radical view on REAL PEOPLE needing REAL HOUSES in the REAL WORLD just to protect your silly little pilgrimage places. Get a perspective! History is important to remember but not asn altar to kneel in front of. Stop hating people for living where they live. Without people you wouldn't have any battlefields and you cannot just keep these places "as was" forever as there is so MANY of them and the USA don't have unlimited land.
