I think the Reds intentionally or not, modeled their "justice system" upon Chrion's behavior in this play- modeled it to a T... they were often by and large well-enough versed in the classics to be able to do that easily in fact, Stalin himself was very well-read at that., and he himself was a monster in human form- a human monster very close in behavior to Chrion in this story.
