loved this video! especially glad you enjoyed Antigona Gonzalez - such a fantastic example of a retelling keeping core elements of a story while also putting it in a very specific context. Like you said about Homefire, which is on my list! glad you really liked that one

Hi! Thank you for doing this video, I found it very interesting! I was surprised to see Sara Uribe's book in your list, it was the book that came to mind when I saw the title of the video. In Latinamerica Antigone is retold over and over again, particularly in play form. It's too easy to put that story in the context of the history of every country here. And the tragedy of not getting to bury your loved ones is sadly easy to understand here. On a happier note, how you told the plot of Antigone is now my favorite retelling of it XD It is curious that a story so rooted in human conflict couldn't work for a dystopian novel. I think that's a failure of the author.

Thank you for sharing! A friend made me aware of Uribe's book and while I hadn't thought about Antigone in that context before it makes a lot of sense.

Been looking forward to this video :) Antigone made quite an impression on me when I did it in high school, so thank you for exploring these different retellings for us - the second in particular sounds super interesting

I love Antigone and I think about it from time to time. Never thought of reading a retelling, but it sounds like a good time :)

Please, do read these three articles on Antigone. Maybe you can see and realise many differences from the communis opinio concerning Antigone. Then you can decide for yourself which interpretation of the work convinces you most: 1. Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood: «Assumptions and the Creation of Meaning: Reading Sophocles' Antigone» 2. Jo-Ann Shelton: «Human Knowledge and Self-Deception: Creon as the Central Character of Sophocles’ Antigone» 3. W. M. Calder III: «Sophocles' Political Tragedy, Antigone»

I love Antigone! The character work is amazing. I agree that Antigone, or Sophocles's plays in general are quite accessible and fit our modern taste pretty well, a lot better that Aeschylos's or Euripides's. I tried Home Fire and i wanted to love it, but the writin style didn't work for me, so i dnf'ed it.

Yes! They are really accessible. Sorry to hear Home Fire didn't work out for you.

You can't beat King Lear in how many ways you die: stabbing by various instruments (knife, dagger, and sword), poisning, hanging, suicide, heart attack, and of broken heart lol. It is like a slasher movie, by the end of it almost the entire cast is dead lol. I haven't read Antigone, but I have seen "Oedipus" some years back on stage with Ralph Fiennes.

For a college course, I had to read both Antigone by Sophocles and the adaptation by Jean Anouilh. The latter was super disturbing in my opinion. I'm surprised to hear there is a sudden resurgence in retelling this story. What's next, Oedipus?

That would certainly be something! I think it's interesting there have been more retellings of Antigone lately.
