Can’t believe this drug is still available. I took it when I was 21 and it wrecked me for years. Panic attacks, anger, depression, horrific nightmares.

@@andrefjbernardo pretty functional… run my own business, in a long term relationship but without a doubt it derailed me in my 20s … hard to know the impact but sizeably negative over the long term and still have some anxiety etc… luckily I only took it for about 8 weeks

I took Mefloquine weekly for a year in Afghanistan. I always had vivid nightmares when sleeping after taking the pill.

I took it in East Timor nearly 20 years ago . I’ve never been the same since . The irony is it doesn’t work as an anti malarial drug . I still got malaria. Double whammy. The military are cunts .

The word side effect is a joke. Lariam is neurotoxic and causes brain injuries. This drug has completely taken all quality of my young life. 24/7 visual distortions and headache , extremely vivid dreams every night, loss of hunger and ringing in the ears, vision-brain interpretation is odd, working memory problems since i took my 3rd pill 9 months ago. Saying that malaria is worse than side effects is what i thought too before taking it although I actually asked for doxycycline, but was given this instead. If this is permanent, I would rather have gotten malaria in its worst form.
@tejasnair33994 жыл бұрын
Azz Lazz I’ve found that and it’s only been 3 months for me so far. Did you take the normal dosage, and how long did you take it? I was given it even though I asked for mallarone, so I took it everyday thinking I had mallarone. I took 5 in a week

I'm sorry to hear that and I encourage you to watch the Law&Order SVU episode titled "Goliath". If the government did this to their own troops, there's no telling what they'll do to the general population.

In my experience the worst was the first 5 years. Especially bad the first year as psychiatric drugs where introduced and complicated the detox process. 12 years later and still have side effects but have learnt to manage them better as well as healthy eating exercise and supplements to support the nervous system. How are you now? I trust you are doing better. Latium and all floxacin based antibiotics are potentially very dangerous.

@@ScribblebytesWorldwidethis is how _I_ learned about this!! How did the U.S. sweep this under the rug so easily since that episode first aired is … typical.

Mefloquine and Tafenoquine are cheap and it really doesn’t work that well Hence that’s why the worlds military’s use them . Malarone is expensive so that’s why the military is reluctant to purchase it . Very poor excuse in my experience.

There are safer drugs than Mefloquine (Larium) now. Yes, vivid dreams were the biggest for me when in Peru 3 months in 1995. This side effect went away completely for me, anyway, after several weeks. For about 20 years the drug, Atovaquone (Malarone, Mepron), has been better and safer. This came about due to resistance in SE Asia. Doxycycline is probably best and safest overall, but not all people (especially children) can take this medication. Remember, all drugs have a side effect and potential true allergic response profile. Therefore, you and your physician should discuss which one is most suitable for you.

My husband was stationed in Djibouti 🇩🇯 in 2017 and had anti malaria pills. Before that I believe he was given some when he was in Somalia in the US Army in the early 90’s. The French were also there in Djibouti and the English.

I’m going through this right now, and I overdosed on it. The only thing that has helped me mentally, and it really has, is exercise and learning how to unhook from my thoughts. I reccomend you get the waking up app, it has really been a godsend for me. If you can’t afford to pay the cost look up how to get it for free (it just involves emailing them and asking). Practising daily and nightly can bring you a long way to dealing with the stormy emotions. Don’t despair and don’t let yourself be taken over.

I went through this garbage too. A year on I’m only slowly getting better. Drinking and smoking unfortunately makes it worse, eating big meals too. What’s helped me is to go on hikes with people in nature often, eating healthy and less, and committing to stay with productive and wholesome emotions enough of the time I can.
