Antipsychotics also ruined my life for 15 years and they didn't make me more stable either, they made me suicidal and unmotivated, gave me anhedonia and ruined my sex life, destroyed my cognitive abilities and impaired my judgement. It didn't prevent me from exhibiting behaviors that got in me in trouble, they just made me so dumb and depressed that I couldn't defend myself against abusive people. Been off meds for almost 3 years and I finally got my learners permit, got one of my GED tests done, got my first job, plan on going to college to be a chemical engineer. Forced psychiatry is not ethical, it's genocide. I'm going to suffer for the rest of my life just because of how people came to view me because of the way I was on meds.

they say even what you eat (or not eat) have an impact on how your brain works, lack of iron for example will have a negative impact on your brain, i mean lack of nutrients in general can drive you crazy, depressive, ....and add to that your genetic propensity and you will end up needing psychiatric drugs, at the same time you are going through this tsunami you have to maintain a job to support yourself, what are the other "quick" options to fix a malfunctiong brain? change diet? separate from toxic people? sure but how to make it when your brain is having a hard time taking desicions and actions, at the same time one have obligations, that's why many people end up taking psychiatric drugs hoping for a quick fix at least a t fixing symptoms

I looked at several research studies and there are conflicting results. Some said that Risperidone increased cognitive function, and several studies say cognition is negatively impacted. Here's a study that reports a negative impact. I am so glad you asked this! Yes it absolutely does. There is scientific evidence that all antipsychotics shrink the brain. Studies done specifically on this matter have showed this is correct. It is terrifying to know that the government and psychiatrists are aware of this and do not discuss this with their patients or put it on the warning label of the bottle. It effects the frontal lobe, causing memory loss. They also effects your cognition. Know scientific fact. It is scary to think this is not discussed with the patient. In fact it is despicable and out right disgusting! Are they trying to kill off the mentally ill? It absolutely shrinks the brain and over long periods of time leads to death. Sickening to think you have to dig for this information.

Try looking into herbals.Ur 5ht2 receptors are probably downregulated and dopamine receptors upregulated.Saint johns wort should upregulate 5ht2 and possibly downregulate d2.Haldol is also proven to be neurotoxic.Herbals should restore some of that.I suggest u look into neurogenic compounds in general

I think that one of the major problem is that the drugs given once are not monitored and adjusted or withdrawn very timely as per the brain chemistry changes. I think there is no advanced system til now that can tell the status of dopamine and the no of receptors on a daily basis. In schizophrenia it is supposed that there is hyperactivity of the dopamine system in a specific region of the brain. So the drug that blocks the receptors are given. Consider an example, let us suppose there is 5mg of dopamine and 100 receptors in a normal healthy person. So 5 x 100 = 500 units could be the total expected value. Now in schizophrenia it is said that there is abnormal production of dopamine. Let it be for example 10mg. Now 10 x 100 = 1000 units. So the doctors try to block some receptors to avoid this overactivity. Suppose a drug can block down the no of receptors to 50. Now 10 mg of dopa x 50 receptors = 500 units of activity which becomes equal to the nornal brain activity. So a patient may experience a relief BUT I think the real problem starts from here onward as I think that the excessive amount of dopamine produced in the brain gets back to normal i.e 5mg within a couple of days but the patient is on the same drug that blocks the receptors and he has only 50 working receptors. So 5mg of dopa x 50 receptors = 250 units of total dopa activity. Meanwhile, brain tries to heal itself and thus can create 50 new receptors to reach the total normal no of 100 receptors. Later after a couple of weeks or months when the doctors try to retrieve the drug, the receptors total comes out to be 150 (old ones plus new ones). At this stage an overactivity can occur as 5mg of dopa x 150 receptors= 750units of total activity which is much greater than the normal. This can again cause the symptoms of schizophrenia. So mistakenly more drugs could be started assuming that withdrawal of the drug is the reason. This can develop into a dangerous cycle of spoiling the right no of receptors and drugging again and again. I think there should be a system of advance examination of the amount of dopamine in the brain and the drugs are to be retrieved quickly as soon as the excessive dopamine gets dissolved naturally. Hence right dosage of the drug and its timely withdrawal is very important.

In October 2016 at the age of 30, I had a brief psychotic episode. I was on olanzapine and risperidone for a few months until about July 2017 when I switched to 40 mg of lurasidone along with 1.25 mg of lorazepam to offset the side-effects of anxiety. Ever since treatment began, I have had erectile dysfunction, weak orgasms, and frequent difficulty achieving ejaculation. In December 2019 I had to increase lorazepam to 2.5 mg. In August 2021, I began to taper both medications. On July 28, 2022, tapering was complete and both medications were completely discontinued. However, symptoms of sexual dysfunction persist with little to no improvement. What is the probability that proper sexual function will never return without treatment? Any help is appreciated.

I reckon w/u on that 1, Ms. Miller; especially when taken in conjunction w/Zyprexa (olanzapine). Those last 2 meds eventually prompted me 2 go psych med-free on 1/1/2017 after being on 30+ different psych meds (from age 4 in 1971; I'm 55 now) ovr a 40+ yr period. The negative effects far outweigh the so-called "benefits" RE: all psych meds. Even worse; it's amazing how meds r MANDATORY/REQUIRED as "treatment" 4 mental health conditions but OPTIONAL 4 other health conditions (especially RE: insulin 4 diabetes). I mention this bc lots of health care pros luv 2 equ8 mental health w/diabetes as an "incentive" 2 take these poisonous psych meds. Well; not all diabetics take insulin & there's NOTHING MANDATORY/REQUIRED RE: INSULIN as treatment 4 diabetes so y do health care pros insist on a mand8/requirement 4 meds as "treatment" 4 depression, schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, & other mental health conditions? To sum it up: This particular class of drugs wrongly called antipsychotics despite having no antipsychotic effects -- they've no positive impact on hallucinations (as a matter of fact those drugs themselves too can cause hallucinations referred as extrapyramidal effect of the drugs) and deliriums--are dubbed major tranquilizers. Those drugs often given to patients simply to make them docile and easily manageable in order to increase the comfort of hospital staff at the expense of harming their both physical and mental health, and needless to say that this is totally unethical. Those side effects mentioned here are actually irreversable adverse effects which would appear in every single recipient in life time use of these drugs. It's also important to note that at the time when thosee patients try to quit those drugs they suffer from withdrawals which are similar to the ones drug addicts and alcoholics experience when they can't find drug or alcohol. That's why those patients should strongly be warned that they shouldn't abruptly cut these drugs due to their harmful and even deadly withdrawals. Beware that when they're given patients against their will without getting their free and informed consent it constitues dergrading or inhuman, cruel treatment due to their hazardous and dysfiguring effects according to the UN convention that aims to prevent torture, degrading or inhuman , cruel treatment. and punishment.

Doctors have start to think of these things as candy with no though given to the long-term harm. Did you know these things shorten life-span on average by 10 years? (That's excluding suicides because many time patients who are put on these drugs with no prior history of suicidal ideation end up killing themselves.) My sister was put on these drugs. Shortly (< 1 year) she attempted suicide. Not more than 3 months and she tried again. 2 years later and she was getting worst with all her symptoms. She was taken off by a new psychiatrist. Just 3 - 4 months after being taken off, she tried again. We didn't know what to do. The new psychiatrist was not an MD but a DO. She used talk therapy and sleep medications. Now its been 7 years and her problems are gone. No more depression. No more bi-annual hospitalizations. No suicide attempts. She's again became the strong woman she was before the first quack psychiatrist put her on anti-psychotics following child-birth depression. Her ex-husband was the one who had talked her psychiatrist into this. He was a narcists and drove her to her wits end with his mind games. She need emotional clarity not drugs that caused her to fall into his trap.

These drugs changed my life for the better. I dealt with untreated chronic psychosis for nearly a decade and after multiple suicide attempts, so many failed classes, developing a nutrient deficiency bc I was so disorganized I couldn't even remember to feed myself, etc I finally started a low dose of aripiprazole. I can think clearer and I've been pretty much psychosis free since I started them a year and a half ago. I work full time and have creative hobbies that I love. I see a future for myself now, when I used to be convinced by my delusions that I had to kill myself or terrible things would happen. My mind is sharper; less muddled and scattered. Not saying they're a miracle drug for everyone or that they don't harm some people - as a matter of fact, I think they're grossly overprescribed and often make people worse - but they DO help some of us. I don't really have side effects, I guess my emotions aren't as extremely intense as they used to be but I usually consider that a pro because I felt suicidally awful all the time, and now when I'm feeling bad, I just feel a normal amount of bad. Yes, these drugs can be dangerous, but they're not bad for everyone. I think for cases like mine, where someone had chronic life threatening psychosis for years, the risk of taking neuroleptics is worth it. Not so much for depression/anxiety or first episode mild psychosis. Every drug has its pros and cons and they must be weighed carefully!

"Anti-psychotics" (neuroleptics) do not exert their therapeutic (pharmacological target) effects on psychosis (positive symptoms of schizophrenia) by rectifying a brain abnormality, such as a chemical imbalance, nor do they target any physiological process that produces the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, but rather neuroleptics suppress symptoms of schizophrenia, by a profound slowing up and dampening down of mental processes by putting a brake on dopaminergic neurotransmission - they arrest natural brain function. Neuroleptics are major tranquilizers, neurological inhibitors, suppressants and depressants of the central nervous system. Neuroleptic means "nerve seizing". Neuroleptics work to treat psychosis by disrupting normal brain function in the reward (mesolimbic) pathway, and in the mesocortical pathway - connecting to the frontal lobe (the part of our brain that makes us human). Neuroleptics do not exert their psychosis-treating effects by targeting an underlying brain abnormality, such as a chemical imbalance, i.e. dysregulation of the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system, ie. overactivity of dopamine neurotransmission in the dopaminergic pathways: mesolimbic (reward), mesocortical (humanity), nigrostriatal (target of antiparkinsonian agents), and tuberoinfundibular (hormones, i.e. prolactin). Neuroleptics do not reverse any known disease process. There is no (sufficient) evidence that a lesion in the dopaminergic pathways is the primary cause of schizophrenia. Neuroleptics seize the central nervous system, dampen down dopaminergic brain activity, suppress function by occupying 70% - 90% dopamine D2 receptors. Neuroleptics are first and foremost psychoactive drugs. Their psychoactive effects (their global alterations of physical and mental states) treat symptoms of schizophrenia. Neuroleptics are not antidotes for psychosis. Neuroleptics are not disease-specific treatments in schizophrenia, but rather mind altering agents producing such mental and physical alterations that suppress symptoms (superimpose upon the symptoms that they are treating). Neuroleptic effects (target and side effects) may be useful in treating (dampening down) psychotic states, but that depends on the context. They do not exert their therapeutic effects by reversing or rectifying a disease process, nor are they curative agents; they cannot cure psychosis, nor prevent, nor decrease the probability that one will become ill or lessen the severity of the illness (quite the contrary!).

Furthermore; the harmful effects of psych meds were hidden from the public. There4; research as such was very "challenging" (relatively speaking). Nvrthlss; personal experiences r always the best judgment of such matters but the dismissive & condescending nature of the medical field (especially those involved w/mental health) further complic8s those harmful effects. Massive chronic brain injury during the withdrawal and all those side effects going on the drug can happen during the taper including psychosis and they will just put you back on. As in all medication, the risks must be weighed against the benefits. Antipsychotics have risks, but so do bipolar mania, psychotic and depressive episodes. In all circumstances, risks must be discussed and weighed. Side effects don't happen in every patient, but they also are not uncommon. Knowing what the side effects are, and switching to another med/Tx may be required. Judicious use of these medication's benefits more often outweigh the symptoms of the disorder being treated. But every patient must evaluate this for their own lives, with the help of their healthcare provider, and possibly family members. Making a rash judgment call to "avoid these medications," because they have side effects, isn't always the best answer either. ECT or suffering with the symptoms are the other options. Not always good outcomes with those options either.

Have you actually read all the side effects? Because if you did you would know antipsychotics cause brain shrinkage, and brain damage of the frontal lobe, causing memory loss. Eventually leading to premature death. More people die of this than suicide. Your thoughts? Read statistics, scientific research, studies, and reports before you spout on about the benefits and risks you have no idea about. False information kills people. Read everything, not just what you wanna here. These are government studies. Psychiatrist will not tell you. You have to find this information out on your own. Study, educate yourself. Not everything you here is the truth. Believe nothing of what you here, and only half of what you see. The truth is out there, but not easily available. Research, research, research! Don't stop! You will find, your conscience open, and learn more than you ever did before. You actions and reaction will be different.

Ms. Sparks; After 30+ different psych meds ovr a 44-yr period (albeit the past 6.5.+ yrs psych med-free), I'd rather suffer w/my symptoms than take "chemical pacifiers" where negative side effects far outweigh the "benefits". Granted; it does vary amongst individuals but I'm 1 of the many whose experience w/psych meds have been negative. Some1 will need 2 force me @ weapon -point (i.e.: gun or knife) 2 take psych meds ever again (& even then; highly unlikely). It can. I believe its not as bad as other antipshychotics. I took it and didnt gain much. 2 -3 pounds? Mind you, I took myself off of it after 3 months. I steer away from any antipsychotics. They are effective because they numb your brain.

After taking antipsychotics, and any psychiatric drug you could think of (and I never even had a psychosis) since age 15, now in my late twenties, I feel it took much of my cognition and overall health from me. I gained a lot of weight since then and need to watch diabetes etc. Also I think this is by design, they didn't even tell about this before. Basically, life out you could forget about a career in full time working in this condition and am impaired. But maybe that's the "healing" effect wished for in these "medications" Now I came to the knowledge, there was never anything wrong with me or my brain, but every thing wrong with these child-poisoners. Yeah that's awful but not an antipsychotic. My doctor said he doesnt prescribe velnaxafine anymore because of these side effects. My friend succeeded getting off it, its possible. You can ask for prozac to replace it while gradually weening off.

And it also makes you seek drugs, when I was meds I was drug seeking constantly because drugs were the only thing that took away the depression and help me cope with being on meds. Now I do none. I was so addicted to pot and took pills and did every drug under the sun and couldn't stop myself from impulsively doing and seeking them. I would face consequences but could stop myself from doing it, even drugs that made me feel like garbage. Then off of meds, I quit almost immediately.
