There's something mythical about bookbinders, cobblers, and blacksmiths. I could watch these craftsmen for hours. If I had my life to live over, I'd have apprenticed in one of these fields.

That view through the window with the top of what looks like a bell tower, and the general solitary contemplative and non-industrial nature of the work, makes me think of The Glass Bead Game - may be my edition had an illustration with such a view, I don't really remember, it's been 50 years. Ahhh, so satisfying! Thank you for sharing this with us all. It's a lovely thing to sit down at the end of a busy day, and watch you working on this project while I enjoy some hot tea. It's very zen, even if I can't quite determine why, haha! I especially appreciate the little glances at nature outside the shop; where I live we don't get all that glorious color and wondrous mess of leaves falling. Even the oaks are 90% evergreen this far south, and I find that I really miss the autumn and winter changes. Very grateful to visit your quiet neck of the woods!

Watching you place the tube reminds me of the one and only time I repaired a book. It was a newer Betty Crocker cookbook, not worth a lot, but unusable as both the tube and the ultimate covering were gone. So I did my best from the information available at the time and the materials I had on hand. Turned out okay. My repairs lasted far longer than the original binding. What was interesting is that we'd had a far older Betty Crocker cookbook that's binding while weakened was still fairly intact.

Cookbooks are an interesting topic, as they are typically quite cheaply made, yet can see heavy use, especially being opened to certain pages over and over. It sounds like you rescued yours though, so well done!
