When I was a very young child in the 1940's, my parents would sometimes take me to visit a senior couple my father's family had known for decades. The lady of the house had this very same music box and would play it for me as a treat. It totally fascinated me because it was so life-like. I would beg to see it again and again, until the lady said "OK, this is enough for this time. We don't want to wear out the little bird." I was SO disappointed when it came time to put it back into the glass display case. What a treat to see it again after 70 years !

I'm from Vietnam. Back in the 90s,My grandfather used to have one. It was made of carton board with nice flower cover like a little gift box , open it and the small wooden bird inside starts to chirp, the sound is very natural with mono pause every few seconds. It's such a nostalgic toy... i wish we could have it nowaday.

My Grandmother sold these ..and bought them in London .. Burmensy Market is a area where Antique dealers had these.. But this one is near mint making it absolutely fantastic. That was in 1994..1995.. The Antique Market in CA was on Fire.. Sold alot of Rookwood pottery.. Found an unsigned Kitaro Shirayamadani pitcher for 1500.00 Doctor in Ohio paid 10 000.00 those were the Good old days before Ebay. Thanks for sharing your Treasure. 🕎

The card seems to be a card identifying the shop only - like for advertising. A certificate or a bill would have been welcomed instead. We can read Recu 10 000 fr. This can be an advance on the real price or for a reparation. No obvious direct relation between the card and the object presented .

Where does the sound come from?????
@troyduncan19694 жыл бұрын
There is a mainspring driven mechanical movement with two stage bellows and a whistle connected to cams, levers and rods.
@thetruthexperiment4 жыл бұрын
Singing bird boxes yes, I can see the bellows and the cams and I know there’s a mainspring, but, as a musician, I want to see the actual whistle. I can’t make it out or how it works.
@troyduncan19694 жыл бұрын
@@thetruthexperiment That is not easy to see when the movement is assembled and working. It is a very simple whistle. The magic really comes from the cams that operate the airflow and pitch and not the whistle itself - similar to a musician that can make a crappy instrument sound ethereal with their talents. This is why a Flajoulot singing bird box sounds so much better than a German made bird box as the cam teeth are both deeper and sharper allowing for more succinct pitch and sweet sounds, coupled with a better made movement allowing for smoother sound transitions when needed. Make sense?
@thetruthexperiment4 жыл бұрын
It makes sense, but I still don’t understand the action. Is it like a slide whistle? How do the cams make the resonant chamber change size? My guess is some sort of piston goes in and out of a tube. Can you post a picture of the whistle if you ever have one out by itself?
@troyduncan19694 жыл бұрын
@@thetruthexperiment I do not have a video detailing the whistle action. There is a piston that slides inside the whistle housing and that is controlled via cams.

That is why this quality level is no longer made. Many things were different 100 years ago and it would be a waste to not appreciate what was crafted back then considering the animals already gave their lives. During this time period, it was also common for ladies hats to be adorned with bird feathers. In short, I would never condone if someone did this today and I also appreciate the beauty of these pieces that were crafted before people considered what they were doing.
