Antique Furiture Whale Oil Lamps

Circa 1820's top blown font with single molded bottom lead crystal whale oil lamp, joined by 3 glass wafers with original burner. Circa civil war, top and bottom double molded, manganese glass whale oil lamp, joined by a single glass wafer, with original burner. Whale oil was used by the well to do to light their homes, while most other used the more volatile camphene fluid.

Thanks for the demonstration and explanation! It never occurred to me that mineral oil could be used as a lamp fuel! I have an antique clock, similar to the one on the right.

I got a question : how come most whale oil lamps dont have chimneys?

Same with candles... Those who could afford them used what we now call a Hurricane Shade... A somewhat hourglass shaped cylinder to set around the lamp to keep wind from putting it out...
