Antique Jet Flame Lighter Restoration

Odd Tinkering

I got my hands on this old Beattie jet lighter. It was specifically designed for pipe smoking. It has a second wick in horizontal pipe which creates pressure and a jet flame when heated. These are rare and collectible lighters.
After the disassembly I cleaned the parts well and used rust remover to get rid of any oxidation. Then the parts were polished with metal polish compound and a buffing wheel.
Next the parts were plated using an electroless plating method which has several advantages over electroplating but the process is much more complicated and more expensive. But also once you have working solution it's quite easy to use. I can't reveal the recipe for the solution but I added a link to similar solution bellow. The manufacturers have usually very good instructions that are specific for their products.

@@nathank7006 I'll go with Storr and say it's not a huge secret. Enough digging and people can find the recipe online. The problem is that it looks kinda nasty when you examine the chemistry of it. I wouldn't say it's on the order of super dangerous, kill you in an instant type of deal, but it's not something the average person would want to mess with in their day-to-day routine.

I myself am a pipe smoker and I have wanted one of those Beattie jet lighters for years. They are pretty expensive since it's such a interesting concept even non smokers who collect lighters desire them. It takes a while for that gas tube to fill with pressure before the flame goes downwards. You have more patience than I would have restoring that thing. They used to be advertised in The American legion magazines of the nineteen fifties. There were many varieties including leather wrapped and gold plated ones. One model even had alligator skin!

Love how you go through this entire process, then when its time to show us how you use it, 2/3rds of the thing is offscreen. Lol.

I have a Beattie lighter just like that. I bought it used because I lost my old one and they don't make them anymore. Enjoyed your video. Saving it for reference if I ever need to work on mine. Thanks. Great video.

the weak jet on these lighters is usually a result of someone widening the jets hole. they originally came with a tool called the "jet probe" that was used to clean any buildup inside, but the tool was lost pretty easily, and people used other things to try and clean it instead, and while I'm not an expert on these I've heard Ronson works much better on older lighters along with softer flints. oh, and these lighters are pretty hard to find in good condition (upwards of 400 dollars) so a restored one like this is really cool to see.
